The Lancer Lines…Apr. 24, 2015 Laguna Middle School John Calandro, Principal 11050 Los Osos Valley Road San Luis Obispo, CA 93405 805-596-4055 PRINCIPAL’S UPDATE Wow! It’s weeks like this that make me so glad to work at Laguna Middle School. We had an amazingly successful career day with wonderful community members coming out to talk about their professions with our students. 8th graders got to hear from a minimum of six community members who spoke not only about what they do for a living, but the path they took from their junior high years to their current position. Our day ended with our own Andrea Cao a talented eight grade student here at Laguna who is a successful entrepreneur. What better way to demonstrate to students the potential within than to highlight one of their classmates who is meeting that potential daily? Please join us on Wednesday, April 29 from 9-10am in the staff lounge for our Principal’s coffee and Volunteer Tea. This is a great opportunity to come and have casual discussion with the principal and vice principal and to mingle with other parents. If you have volunteered at our site this year, we would love to celebrate you that day with some good food and camaraderie. In other news, standardized testing is coming up during the next two weeks. Next week, our 8th graders take their science tests and the following week, May 4-8, students will be taking the SBAC in English. Math testing will be during the following week, May 11-15. We are scheduling testing so that it takes place within each student’s regular class period; English testing will take place during English and math testing will take place during students’ math classes. The SBAC assessment is aligned with our common core standards and is a computer-based test. We did a trial run of them last year to familiarize students with the format. These are definitely not “guess and check” assessments and are very different from the previous standardized assessments we used to take. The SBAC assessments require a great deal of thinking and justifying of answers from students- skills our teachers have been working to develop all year. We are interested to see how this assessment reflects what our students have learned this year. WALL OF FAME: Each week our teachers select students who have been exemplary of the hard work and positive energy we want to see in our classes. Students’ names are added to the “Wall of Fame” just outside the activity quad. Congratulations are in order for the following students: Michael Smith, Josh Oates, Michelle Williams, Michael Abalos, Anthony Molin, Emma Mendoza, and Michael Todd. AROUND SCHOOL Gary Edmonson, our lead custodian, is awesome! Thank you to our career day presenters and to 8th grader Andrea Cao for inspiring our 8th grade students. This year, Laguna Middle School will be hosting the YMCA Youth Institute Summer Camp. This 5 week camp begins with a week of sleepaway camp followed by 4 weeks of amazing learning and fun. Students at the camp will produce their own magazine and movies over the course of the summer and will screen their movies at the Youth Institute film festival at the end. Student films from the Cambria Youth Institute have been winners at the SLO International film festival and others. The camp will run from July 6- August 7 and will be from 9am-3pm Monday-Friday (The first week, July 6-10 is the sleepaway camp portion with students camping in Mammoth Lakes for 4 nights). We do ask that students commit to the full 5 weeks of the program as they will be working in production teams and will be developing their skills in working with one another. This camp is open to students currently in grades 6-8. We are giving priority to students who are or will be attending Laguna Middle School next year. There are only 20 spaces available in this camp and the cost is $750 (only $150 a week for full time camp and a week away!) and financial assistance is available. Signups will be coming soon.
