Happy New Year to all! With the arrival of 2015, we are rapidly approaching the end of
our first semester. If you’ve got 8th graders, that means this is the last semester before
high school, and if you’ve got a 7th grade, it means your student has successfully
transitioned to middle school! As much as we all love vacation, it was really nice to get
back into the swing of things and see the students here again.
As part of my New Year’s resolution, I will be cleaning out my office on Friday so that I
can be more productive and spend more time in classrooms observing teachers, helping
students and looking for ways to keep us moving forward. I am excited to be in the rooms
as that is where all of the fun is! Our teachers consistently do an outstanding job of
teaching and caring for our students and I always come back from my visits to
classrooms invigorated!
This office cleansing will be a big change and a “fresh start” for the new year. If you
happen to be in the office and wonder if I’ve moved my office, you don’t need to
wonder- it’s still there, I’m just trying to be better at what I do every day. In order to pull
this off, I will be counting on the help of others to keep me focused on my goals and call
me when I am backsliding- just like the support you give to your students at home.
Since we’re finishing up the semester, please help your student to keep track of any work
that needs to be turned in (especially if it is makeup work) and help them to study for any
tests or quizzes they may have this week. We want everyone to end the semester strong!
We’ve got a short week coming up next week because Friday is a teacher work day and
our students do not have school, so the last day of classes for our students this semester is
on Thursday!
Have a great weekend, and Happy New Year!

Parents and Social Media Class Returning
For those of you who may have missed it last time, the Parents and Social Media Class,
taught through San Luis Coastal’s Adult Education Program will be returning to Laguna
Middle School on Monday, January 26 and Monday, Feb 2 in the school library. This
two-class session runs from 6:15pm to 8:45pm and is taught by the lovely and talented
Eileen Calandro.
The course gives parents tools to talk with their students about the ever changing and
fast-paced world of social media and helps parents to “build their tribe” of like-minded
parents to help look out for one another’s kids on social media. Come and learn how to
help your student develop a positive digital footprint whether s/he already has a social
media presence, or is thinking of having one in the future.
If you are interested, please register by clicking the link here or call the adult school at

As in years past, we are creating banners for the school’s multipurpose room and gym
which will be an ongoing advertisement of those local firms that support our student
body. The 3x4 banner will be printed with your company name and logo on it and will
be hung by March 1st where it will be visible by both students and parents until after
Back to School Kick Off in Fall 2015. Businesses will also be recognized in the weekly
school newsletter.
The cost for one of these banners is $250 and the proceeds will be used in part to offset
the cost of the tokens given to the students for each lap of the 3-Mile Run. All additional
proceeds will be used towards ensuring the success of our middle school student body. In
2014, additional funds raised by our community sponsors helped to fund the school’s first
play in many years, provided transportation for field trips, microscopes for science labs
and Samsung tablets for multiple teaching initiatives.
To purchase a banner, contact Kathy Godfrey [email protected].
