Boating season is upon us, and our club will once again be humming with the sounds of summer! Soon you will be seeing lots of activity on our docks, including some much needed dock replacement! I am pleased to say that our board of directors has approved funding for replacement of the main docks over the next few years. Please remember that upkeep of the finger docks remains the responsibility of the slip holders. John Caputo has worked diligently pricing out different types of dock materials and soliciting bids for the work. Options were presented and discussed at the March board meeting and it was decided that all main docks will be replaced with the work occurring in phases over the next few years. The main dock, running from the grassy area to the guest dock, will be replaced first with work beginning in May. Please be patient while this work is ongoing as it may be a little crowded maneuvering down the dock until the work is completed. The marina is the most vital part of any yacht club and we owe it to our membership (which is growing by the way!) to keep our facilities in the best shape we can. Join us for Opening Day on May 17 and keep your fingers crossed that we will be able to open the season with the main dock completely replaced! Taking pride in our club shows in the improvements we make to our facilities and grounds, but it also shows in the way we conduct ourselves in and around the club. Each of us represents LaSalle Yacht Club; whether we are at another club for an event or we are here at our own club. It’s important that we conduct ourselves in a respectful manner as a proud member of the LaSalle Yacht club at all times. Offensive language and comments should be kept in check while in the clubhouse, on the grounds or while patronizing other clubs. The same high standards apply to guest that visit our club for various functions as well. Please be mindful that we encourage families to visit our club as well as members from sister clubs. Let all of us do our part to uphold a high standard of behavior and conversation so as not to give false impressions of LYC or its membership. In addition, if you see any vandalism or defacing of LYC property or the property of an LYC member, please let a Board Member or Bridge Officer know. These acts will not be tolerated. Regards, Marty Commodore Please inform us in the event a member or first mate is hospitalized for illness. Let us know who it is, the hospital name and the room number. Officer’s phone numbers are always listed within the Griffon Log. www.lasalleyachtclub.com The Griffon Log Vice Commodore MIKE DALLESSANDRO Hello, Since I was a child our family has been spending spring break in Myrtle Beach. This is a tradition I have carried on with my children that has brought years of good memories. However the down side is that I can't recall an Easter spent in NY where we could rise from our own beds and did a traditional Easter in WNY. This also means that we were not able to attend LYC Easter Brunch....however, all of the feedback I have received from those who attended has been excellent! I truly want to thank our staff for "knocking it out of the park" as I like to say. I also want to thank Social Director Kari, John Caputo and Paul Grenga for coordinating the egg hunt and greeting guests. I also truly appreciate my wife Karen for decorating the club in an Easter Theme. Not only did she use some existing club decorations but, she also brought some from home so that stuffed rabbit that always seemed to be looking at me giving me the stink eye wasn't on my mantle this season! With that said I have always been in town for Mother's Day and of course LYC is the place to be on that special day. Please get your reservations in early for this event as we anticipate another sell out crowd. Regarding our food service, the House Committee expanded our Monday and Tuesday service past "fryer" foods and you are now able to get some pub favorites such as burgers, sandwiches and a basic salad or soup of the day on these nights. We will monitor use of this expanded service and continue it only if demand exists. So if you are pondering where to go on a Monday or Tuesday night consider trying LYC! Flags raised and bottoms wet soon! Mike Dallessandro V/C 2015 GRIFFON LOG INTERESTED IN ADVERTISING IN THE GRIFFON LOG? Well it is finally that time of the year! Spring is here and boating season is amongst us and that means clean-up and beautification of the grounds. The weather is starting to cooperate; so a grounds crew is on task and LYC will be ready for Opening Day. Please take care in cleaning up after yourselves in the boat yard; this is all of our responsibility as we start to get back into our boats to get them ready for the water; I trust this won’t be a problem and if anyone needs a hand, please don’t hesitate to ask. We are a member club, all willing to lend a helping hand. There will be a separate dumpster in the boat yard for your convenience. I would like to emphasize that May begins our season with two important events, especially for our newer members. Opening Day, Sunday May 17th is one I encourage new members to attend. It’s a tribute to the traditions of the club, the raising of the flags and honors all members. It’s the foundation that makes belonging to a member club even more worthwhile, so come out and enjoy the day. Also, as a way to acknowledge the newly joined members, is “New Member Night”. It’s a casual (May 29th) Friday evening with entertainment. Please come, have dinner and enjoy the night. I will be there as your host; if there are any questions about the inner workings of the club, I will be happy to discuss them with you. At the very least, come enjoy a few drinks on us, music and laughs with fellow members. Hope to see you all there. Have a safe and memorable boating season… Best Regards, Paul Grenga Rear Commodore Fleet Captain JOHN CAPUTO Dear Members, It seems as if the cruel joke Mother Nature pulled this winter would never end! However here we are, the slips are full and for the first time in a long time, there is a waiting list. The boat yard is a busy hub this time of year, Members busily removing shrink wrap, polishing an cleaning reading there vessels to launch. I would like to take this opportunity to personally thank the members for keeping their area clean, the extra effort is appreciated. I have always considered the dock to be one of the entrances to the club, after all we are a boat club and other boaters enter the premise by water! I look forward to updating of the main run. The project is underway and soon we will all be able to enjoy it. In closing, On behalf of LaSalle Yacht Club we wish to extend to our new members a warm invitation to partake in activities and enjoy our facilities during the 2015 season. As always, please do not hesitate to contact me anytime. John Caputo, Fleet Captain The Griffon Log www.lasalleyachtclub.com Social Director KARI ANN BULLMAN Hello Members, Here we are! at the start of our season...finally! I believe fellow members and friends we are in store for fun and memorable one as we kick it off with the first formal event of the year, Sunday May 17th is Opening day. If you have never attended an Opening day, I strongly urge you too. Ladies are decked out in their spring attire and wide brimmed hats and the guys, so handsome in uniform or leisure suits. This is a nice event to get more acquainted with the officers and first ladies and of course meet members and make new friends. The traditional ceremony along with the one that honors fallen members is one I recommend being a part of. This year is my 3 rd annual opening day, the first year I attended, I was not aware of another certain tradition of the ladies. ‘HATS”...they were mostly all adorned with wide brimmed hats, therefore, I made sure as I attended my second Opening day I was in full fashion. Low and behold, I was “only” one of two gals with a hat on that year… Humm! Well, some traditions change or are ones that you may choose to participate in or not from time to time; so here is my advice, if you are a new gal coming to Opening Day, do whatever makes you comfortable as it is not required. But, I figured I would share this with newly attending members, incase you did not know and this year the room is full of “HATS”...its to be seen. I discovered, I really liked the hat, it was a fashion I had yet to acquire. New Member night is going to be the first night of the season where we really like to see everyone get together, hopefully on the patio after dinner and with boats in the water now that the boom is out. Hey, I still consider myself a new member, so if you only been around a few years, and you still would like to get to know more members, tonight’s your night. With special musical guests “Cue the Sun” you know them by name… Gerry Gismondi and Tim Britt. If you like hot and steamy, then lace up your suits and join us for the Caribbean Clam Bake on Saturday June 13th. This is an all-day event, so make sure the kids have a sitter for the latter part of the day, because, once the Caribbean Extravaganza Steel Drum band and Princess Shemika have finished entertaining us (they play 1-4pm), we will be joined by the boys of Pirates Dream to take us into the evening Caribbean style. Back by popular demand is the first mates famously delicious Jell-O shots and new this year is a prize give-away. We also celebrate our Mother’s and Father’s these months and the club is always a special place to honor them… Wishing all Mother’s and Father’s a Happy Day! Have a safe and healthy boating season… see you all on the water.
