September-December programs for teachers of World Languages: Focus on State and Common Core Standards ADDRESSING 21ST CENTURY SKILLS AND COMMON CORE COMPETENCIES FOR WORLD LANGUAGE EDUCATORS Program Content: Participants will examine instructional strategies that engage 21st Century learners. They will learn to design lessons that teach 21st Century skills, develop Common Core competencies, integrate career-technical education and develop students' linguistic and cultural proficiency in order to prepare them for future study, work and global citizenship. ENHANCING COMMON CORE AND STANDARDS-BASED COMPETENCIES THROUGH TECHNOLOGY Program Content: Participants will learn some recent technologies and programs used to enhance world language programs and support Common Core efforts. They will learn to locate and use authentic materials from the web including video, music, art, graphics, text, data; to make input comprehensible by effectively using PowerPoint and Moviemaker; to facilitate interpersonal communication through online sites such as GoogleClassroom; and to support presentational communication using Voki, Voicethread and other online tools. During each session, participants will be allowed some time to practice new skills and develop lessons that incorporate common core elements. Participants must be familiar with the basic functions of the programs in Microsoft Office and need to bring a laptop with wireless capability. USING FILM TO ENHANCE THE COMMON CORE AND STANDARDS-BASED COMPETENCIES OF SPANISH SPEAKERS Program Content: Participants will learn about the major artistic movements in Peninsular and Spanish American cinema exploring cross-cultural links to history, current events, art, music and literature. They will analyze the cinematic arts through representative films and filmmakers, and examine procedures for developing Common Core and Standards-based competencies using film to enhance the curriculum and infuse it with authentic experiences of cultural merit.
