Presidents Report

Presidents Report Michael Ferrera March 19, 2015 Thank you for accepting my report in my absence as I am traveling in Washington D.C. representing Los Angeles Young Professionals (YPs) at our annual Urban League Legislative Policy Conference. I am sure you are in good hands with our outstanding Vice-‐President Faye Tillery and the executive board. Therefore, I will be brief so the board can address you at the General Body Meeting for March 2015. In short we are making great strides here in Los Angeles on building a stronger foundation of the powerful entity the Urban League is as a whole. You will notice this in the tagline for our Whitney M Young Jr. Gala, “Dawn of a New Day.” Our CEO Nolan Rollins believes by strengthening our existing corporate relationships as well as fostering new relationships brings us to where we are of the Dawn of a New Day here at the Los Angeles Urban League. We are in the process of returning The League to the legendary reputation that it has had for a number of years here in Los Angeles. As YPs, we will be following the gala with our signature To the Nines After Party tentatively spearheaded with Dawn of a New Day, with Leaders in Training. Part of the reason for using a portion of the gala tagline is to focus on my vision as president to build on the strength we have to the Urban League as YPs by being the future leaders in America. Secondly, we use a portion to reinforce the importance that the YPs and the Urban League are not different organizations. We are the same organization with the same goal of bettering the community. National Urban League Young Professional Updates: • There is a change in leadership; the current Chief of Staff Bacara Mauldin will be moving on from the role for other business endeavors and Carmela Smith will serving in the position as Chief of Staff to Brandi Richard until elections in July. • Note: Elections happen on the national level every two years and this July is an election year. • In this election it is important to note that there are 3 major changes proposed in our national bylaws that all official members of LAULYP will have an opportunity to vote on locally. Our parliamentarian Gerreka Gilliam and I will be sharing more of these details with you at next months general body meeting prior to voting. • Please plan for registration form National convention that will be in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida from July 29 – August 1, 2015. Please register at our link on the website to inform the board if you are interested in attending. There may be ways for us to support official members financially to attend but we need to know if you are interested in attending. • The theme for our National Convention this year will be Save Our Cities: Education, Jobs & Justice. Please remember to stay abreast with our national website NUL.org for updates and information. You can also receive most of the information here on our Los Angeles YP website. Local Urban League Young Professional Updates: • There are some opportunities for committee members and leadership positions here in LA. Please consider how you can enhance your membership by joining a committee or asking question on how you can be involved. • Two major programs we have coming up which is our National Day of Service on April 25, 2015 that you should mark your calendars to attend at our headquarters at 10am. • Next major event is the WMY dinner and after party. This event is held this year on May 15 2015 at the Beverly Hilton. We need members to serve on the planning committee and this can be a great opportunity to gain insight on this large production and purpose of the Urban League. • I need your help building the LAULYP Database. Some of you may be members but we may not have all membership details such as postal address, phone number and so forth. If you feel you are a member or interested in being a member, please reach membership chair or myself to verify and we can make sure it is accurate. • Finally, please know that I and the executive board are here to support you with anything you would like to gain or learn about the Los Angeles Urban League.
