By the end of the day we will have assembled our own Nature Table to inspire the second day. Day 2: This day will introduce people to materials and skills that they might not have used before. Participants will be encouraged to make a series of small objects which will be their individual responses to the Nature Table. Nature Table – Get involved! Suitable for all ages Do you have a favourite object from nature? To coincide with Dail Behennah’s nature table in the exhibition, we would like you to help us build a collection of natural objects for our own nature table in Studio 3 and share your experiences with us. An important part of a nature table is identification and the question of why is something in that place? Why did you pick up that particular thing? What do you like about it? Why does it look like this? If you would like to donate an object for the duration of Dail Behennah’s exhibition please get in contact with our education officer Sioned Phillips. [email protected] photography: Jason Ingram Learning Projects – Laura Ellen Bacon at Loggerheads Country Park As part of our ongoing Esmée Fairbairn Foundation funded programme and following the success of Laura Ellen Bacon’s large-scale willow installation ‘Inundation’ in Gallery 2 at Ruthin Craft Centre last summer, we have invited Laura back to do another site-specific project but this time in collaboration with Loggerheads Country Park. In the exhilarating setting of Loggerheads, Laura Ellen Bacon worked with different groups of young people from Young Carers, Ysgol Maes Hyfryd, Ysgol Plas Cefndy and Loggerheads Young Rangers to build and construct large scale sculptural pieces made out of various living willow (some locally sourced by Mandy Coates from Moelfre) that can be enjoyed by the public visitors to Loggerheads for some time. Curves, knots and the expressive properties of material itself (willow) were the main features of this project. Laura Ellen Bacon demonstrated how to connect willow strands together, using curves and knots to create voluminous, full bodied works that people can pass between and peer through and in time the willow will grow naturally and the sculptures will appear to look like boulders but curiously lightweight. The project will conclude with a celebratory exhibition display at Ruthin Craft Centre in Studio 3 from May onwards, which documents the journey of the making and process of the sculptures at Loggerheads through film and photography created by IdleFire Productions. BARRY STEDMAN Retail Gallery Showcase Exhibition Ruthin Craft Centre 18 April – 5 July 2015 ‘Inspired by mark making and painting, I take a relaxed and direct approach to making vessels. I aim to create a sense of drama that is fresh and exciting, exploring vibrant colour compositions and exploiting the gestural qualities of fluid brush marks and soft clay. Most of my work is made with red earthenware clay, and is usually wheel thrown and altered or constructed from soft slabs and then painted with coloured slips, stains, oxides and glaze’. All works are available to purchase. For more information please call 01824 704774. Jones Bros wishes to collaborate with the craft centre and local schools to find ways to re-use and recycle their ‘waste’ materials, to show their commitment to the environment and community. Throughout May and June Ruthin Craft Centre will deliver an engaging programme for local schools in Ruthin and the surrounding area working with textile artist Bella Leonard who creates sculptural work out of everyday materials to develop their understanding of the value and the importance of their environment through the recycled materials provided. The workshops will be accompanied by a Professional Learning Pack which will link to the theme of recycled materials and the environment based on Jones Bros engineering innovation and design. The Learning Pack will create a valuable cross curricular resource which can then be continued to be used in schools throughout Denbighshire. The project will also include a Professional Development Day at RCC to provide Jones Bros administrative staff with an opportunity to familiarise themselves with the materials used within their workplace to develop deeper staff commitment and motivation. This master-class will be led by renowned artist Michael Brennand-Wood. The artwork and resources created during these sessions will be on display at Ruthin Craft Centre project space in the courtyard as part of our launch for our new programme this summer What is Craft?
