CW Summer 2015 - Leeds Civic Arts Guild

April – July 2015
Welcome to Summer at Carriageworks Theatre
Leeds Young Film presents
The Summer Season has arrived and there’s plenty of light and laughter at the Carriageworks
Theatre. May half term’s headline event is human/animation duo Little Howard Big Howard
(26 May). With stand-up comedy in the studio every other Saturday through to July, don’t miss hot
picks Tom Allan and Carly Smallman (9 May) or Ray Peacock (13 Jun). Scottish Falsetto Sock
Puppet Theatre (17 Jul) return to Leeds after a sell-out show last summer, a sure choice in our
Edinburgh Preview series.
Local company Interplay premiere their highly interactive production Paint (5 & 6 Jun) asking
audiences to play on the stage in a very messy way! Don’t miss top touring companies BurntOut
Theatre with Muscovado (19 Jun) and Vamos Theatre with Nursing Lives (9 May) as they present
touching tales of female life in hard political times. Luke Wright, performance poet, brings his tale
Stay at Home Dandy (7 May) to our stage, lyrically tackling gender preconceptions.
Summer starts off with a bang at Carriageworks Theatre!

Don’t Believe a Word
‘I’m a skeptic. But don’t take my word for it.
Or indeed anybody’s. For anything...’ This is
the premise of Mitch’s new critically acclaimed
show. Mitch debunks myths, exposes
nonsense and grapples with the very nature of
knowledge itself... with amusing consequences
and of course a few songs along the way.
The Now Show aside, Mitch has recently copresented BBC Radio 2’s Anatomy of a Guitar,
performed Mitch Benn is the 37th Beatle and
presented Spank The Plank for BBC Radio 4.

Nursing Lives
A heart-warming wartime tale of
bravery and love from the UK’s
leading full mask theatre company.
The story... When Flo, a feisty seventysomething, learns that the hospital she trained
at during the Second World War is being
demolished, she decides to take one last look
– and stop the bulldozers in their tracks... Her
illicit visit becomes a personal celebration of
friendship, courage, adventure and romance.
But is what Flo remembers really the truth, or is
history ready to be re-written?
A love story set in the early 1980s of Thatcher’s
Britain, Nursing Lives takes us back to the hardworking, heart-breaking, swing-dancing world of
the UK’s wartime hospitals.
Like all Vamos Theatre shows, Nursing Lives
is wordless, telling its story through physical
communication, a strong visual design and an
original soundtrack. This is a humorous and
poignant production from one of the best of the
UK’s full mask theatre companies
Nursing Lives is supported by Arts Council England, Sanctuary Care

Stay-at-Home Dandy
Decadent booze hound, Luke Wright would
love to spend his life flouncing around looking
fabulous, but back in rural Suffolk he’s got the
school run to do.
Wright tells captivating stories in visceral verse
from neglected corners of Britain. Spend halfterm with lonely science teacher Mr Hooper; and
cry ‘NOT IN MY NAME’ with the irate villagers of
Much Harpingon.
By turns funny, poignant and political, this
stay-at-home dandy celebrates ordinary people
having extraordinary moments, then sticks a
‘champagne-rinsed rococo boot’ into the swines
who run things.

Muscovado
Have you ever made a monkey of yourself?
At Spacious Places recovery centre, giving up
drink and drugs is just the beginning of the
journey. Common Chorus have been listening
to people who have hit rock bottom, but they
have come together as part of something
bigger than themselves; to save each other’s
lives.
There is an animal inside all of us; these
people have a story about how they learnt to
tame it. Drawing upon biographical stories
from The Twelve Steps and The Chimp Paradox
by Dr Steve Peters; this is a story of hope for
anyone who has ever wanted to be ‘better’.
Muscovado is the scorching new play by
Matilda Ibini about slavery in nineteenth
century Barbados. A heady mix of sexual
intrigue, piercing choral music and extreme
racial tension, Muscovado provides an
unflinching portrayal of life on a sugar
plantation in 1808. Accompanied by live
original music and atmospheric soundscape.
