Don Schieman, Mr. Robert Klages, Mr. David Faerber, Mr. Kent Schappert, Mr. Reg Tiegs Talking with God In today’s essayist presentation, we learned that prayer is a form of two-way communication which can only begin in the loving heart of God. He who created us for a relationship with Him and with others did not abandon us when sin entered creation. He promised to restore the relationship which existed in the beginning and gave us His Son Jesus Christ. Therefore, God is the one who restores communication through Jesus. Christ is in our midst through Word and Sacraments. Pray continually. Speak with God. Not only in words, but also through living a life expressing the presence of God in your heart. Loving our Neighbours Mill Neck Deaf Ministry in NY provides employment services for deaf students who have graduated from their academic programs. Among the many services that their ministry provides are: monetary grants, support for after-school programs, and sign language summer camps for hearing impaired children. The organization’s motto says it all: “For the deaf, by the deaf, with the deaf.” Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 Volume 1, Issue 3, Lutheran Church-Canada East District 2015 Convention News Volunteer Thank You Thank you to all the volunteers who helped make this convention possible: Your Local Arrangements Committee: - Stephen Klinck (chair) - Rev. Richard Wukasch Lutheran Church-Canada East District 2015 Convention From the Breakout Sessions: Joyfully in Mission: ‘Mission’ means so much more than foreign locations or door-to-door evangelism. ‘Mission’ as described in the Bible involves sharing the Gospel in word and deed. Christ calls His redeemed people to be His ambassadors, pointing others to Him. To be joyful in mission involves first receiving and knowing well the Gospel ourselves, then relaying that message with trust and joy. We can do so joyfully, having the confidence and hope to proudly bear the name of Jesus. Abuse Prevention: In a PowerPoint presentation, Ken Hall from Robertson Hall Insurance (used by Erb and Erb) explained that cases of abuse, especially those involving children, are not just the perceived big city, big congregation problems. In fact, cases of abuse more often occur in small and rural congregations. Responsibility falls on church councils to implement and follow abuse policy guidelines, which include: required background checks, determining who may be placed in positions of trust, etc. A Supreme Court of Canada ruling in 1999 made not-for-profit organizations responsible for abuse which happened to children in their care. A 7-point abuse policy checklist of essentials was provided, and point #3 - Screening was expounded. Discussion went into ‘Who needs to be screened,’ and ‘types of criminal record checks and re-checks.’ Many resources and helpful tips were explained, and many handouts provided.
