Pharmacist Rita Schmelzle, 63, had the procedure, which was carried out using the minimally invasive (MIS) technique, done at German Orthopaedic Hospital by founder Dr Heinz Roettinger. The mother-of-two, from Aalen in northern Germany, is walking after Monday’s operation and should be able to return home within the next week. “I could have done this anywhere in the world, including the US and Europe, but chose Bahrain because I trust Dr Roettinger and this hospital,” she said from her room at the facility in Salmaniya. The cause of this is not known but we do know that some cats are more prone than others. Certain skin conditions, for example allergies, can exacerbate the occurrence of blackheads/acne. Like other skin conditions, treatment of feline acne is often based on controlling the problem rather than establishing and curing the condition. Strange as it may seem, some cats are allergic to plastics – try changing your cat’s food and water bowl to something made from ceramic, metal or glass. If the dish is shallow, this will keep your cat’s chin clean as will regular cleaning of the area. If you do not see any improvement, contact your vet. Dr Chandran’s exclusive visit to the hospital takes place from Saturday to September 18. Having a newborn baby, especially if it’s the first, could cause parents a lot of stress if they don’t know what is considered medically normal. Dr Chandran can advise parents on what to look out for in a newborn and when it’s necessary to see a doctor. Monitoring On average, most babies weigh 2.5kg if they’re born at term, which means after 37 weeks. If they weigh significantly lower, the baby may be labelled as a growth-retarded one and should require a doctor’s attention for the first few months. “If a baby weighs more than 4kg, then it is labelled Large for Gestational Age (LGA), usually a result of a diabetic mother,” says Dr Chandran. “At this weight, risks include birth injuries and low blood sugar or hypoglycaemia, and should require immediate medical attention, monitoring and early feeding,” Dr Chandran adds. Temperature is usually a problem in preterm or growth retarded babies. Normally, babies born at term have a special fat called Brown Fat which is used to generate heat. Preterm and growth restricted babies do not have this fat and are susceptible to hypothermia. “These babies need to be well-clothed with a cap and mittens to avoid heat loss in their head and limbs,” says Dr Chandran. “Since we’re in a warm country, cotton clothes and close monitoring of the baby’s temperature should be maintained to avoid overheating,” he adds. Early introduction of breastfeeding and a mother’s wellbeing are crucial to initiating let down. Breastfeeding should be continued for as long as 24 months, since the high quality protein it contains is richer in quality than formula or cow’s milk. Milk should be produced at the rate of 600ml to 800ml per day through infancy and parents should check if the baby is drinking enough by monitoring weight gain and satiation cues.
