ASTHMA
What causes asthma? No one seems to be able to say for sure exactly what causes asthma but it
would seem that if you have a family history of asthma, eczema or other allergies then you are more
likely to develop it. You're twice as likely to develop asthma if your parents have it.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO) “The strongest risk factors for developing
asthma are a combination of genetic predisposition with environmental exposure to inhaled substances
and particles that may provoke allergic reactions or irritate the airways, such as:
indoor allergens (for example house dust mites in bedding, carpets and stuffed furniture,
pollution and pet dander)
outdoor allergens (such as pollens and moulds)
tobacco smoke
chemical irritants in the workplace
air pollution
Other triggers can include
cold air,
extreme emotional arousal such as anger or fear,
physical exercise.
Even certain medications can trigger asthma:
aspirin and other non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs,
beta-blockers (which are used to treat high blood pressure, heart conditions and migraine).
Urbanization has been associated with an increase in asthma. But the exact nature of this relationship
is unclear.”
Asthma is an inflammatory disease, therefore preventative treatment is vital. You must take this
treatment even when your asthma symptoms aren't present to ensure your asthma is well controlled.
Asthma attacks can be potentially life-threatening. People need to pay close attention to their triggers
and become educated on the best ways to eliminate or at the very least control these triggers.
One thing that has been made very plain to me over the years is that if you have a lung condition you
never can tell when you are going to have a good day or a bad day and often there seems to be more
bad days than good ones. The best we can hope for is to gain control of the disease.
That’s all for now”
