FREEDOM REQUIRES FAITH
Treatment at De Paul is based on the belief that
substance use disorders develop within the context of
an individual’s heredity and environment. We view
addiction as a complex, chronic and treatable illness.
We believe that all individuals have within them innate
health and the capacity to recover.
Over 30,000 people
have been served by
De Paul since its
incorporation as a
independent
non-profit in 1978.
We respect and recognize the uniqueness of each
individual and the need for individualized treatment. We
utilize all available community resources and work
collaboratively to support the ongoing recovery of our
clients. Our treatment services utilize the best
evidence-based practices and implement a unique
integrated approach.

“I remember the exact moment that I realized I wanted to be

and embrace myself everyday. Coming to De Paul was the
biggest step I ever took and it has changed my life forever,
even if I wanted to I couldn’t live like I did before...I have
chosen a different path in life, a sober one. There is one
quote that I remember the staff at De paul telling me, ”Don’t
give up five second’s before the miracle.”

“Since the age of seven I had not experienced more than
two months of sobriety. My life revolved around fueling my
drug habits. I lived under the Burnside Bridge for years and
was unemployable due to my substance use disorder.
Locally I was known as a trouble maker. My life was a mess
and I knew if I did not seek help I would be lost forever. De
Paul saved my life. De Paul helped me realize that I have
the abilities and capabilities necessary to lead a fulfilling
and happy life without the use of drugs. There’s a saying
that I learned during my stay in residential treatment, “Keep
the plug in the jug.” It really helps! I face temptations
everyday, but De Paul helped me realize that I am strong
enough to make the right decisions. Thank you De Paul.”
Randy, Adult Residential Client

Project Metamorphosis (META) is a community partnership
based program designed to provide culturally specific drug and
alcohol services to Portland’s homeless youth populations. De
Paul Treatment Centers, Janus Youth, Outside In, New Avenues
for Youth, and the Native American Youth & Family Center all
collaborate together to encourage homeless youth to exit the
street life with innovative outreach, customized youth friendly
services, mental health treatment, and education.
DIVERSITY
De Paul has implemented and currently maintains a cultural
diversity plan that addresses both recruitment and retention of
culturally diverse personnel and Board Representatives, as
well as culturally competent service provision for clients. When
we are open to learning about people from other cultures, we
become less lonely. Prejudice and stereotypes separate us
from individuals and whole groups of people who could be our
friends and partners working to improve our health, and
working towards freedom.

STAY - Sustaining Treatment for At-Risk Youth
Many of our youth clients need a transitional time in which they are able to step-down from full-time
residential care to intensive outpatient treatment providing an opportunity to gradually reintegrate into
their homes and communities. The STAY program allows our youth clients to live at our facility during the
week while being able to return to their homes and communities on weekends. By staying connected to
their therapists and peers in recovery during the week and integrating gradually with their families on
weekends, these youth are more likely to sustain recovery upon completion of treatment.
Integrated Family Therapy
The affect of addiction tends to be widespread. Those connected to the addict are often profoundly
impacted and the struggle to cope and adjust to the chaos produced which can be overwhelming.
Understanding how family members are affected by chemical dependency is crucial for treatment and
recovery and for restoring balance and well-being throughout the family. De Paul’s family therapy
combines a family systems approach with individualized treatment for substance use disorders by
engaging families from their first call for help through early recovery and aftercare.
GED Program Career Counseling
GED Program Career Counseling provides low-income youth with drug and alcohol addiction the
opportunity to prepare for and take the GED examination. The GED preparation program is an important
element in serving our population of at-risk teenagers and giving them the tools they need to succeed in
a clean and sober lifestyle. We have therefore established a standard that they pass practice exams in all
five of the subject areas before being sent to take the exam. This year we had 76 youth participate in the
GED Program with a total of 1,200 hours of tutoring in 50 weeks.
