Contact Chaplain Birdsong if you are interested in volunteering. Please come out and support the May 24 Memorial Day Ceremony at the Raleigh National Cemetery. The Raleigh Concert Band will start playing patriotic music at 1:30 p.m. with the formal program starting at 2:00 p.m. The guest speaker is Brigadier General James R. Gorham. Mark your calendar to attend the fish fry on May 30th and July 4th open house at post 1. On January 12 Commander Bonapart Judged the District 11Oratorical Contest sponsored by Apex Post 124. Coorganizer and Post 1 member Gerry Coleman did a great job organizing this event. The environment at the event was warm, encouraging and well attended by members of the community. The contestants were all outstanding and included: Daniel Kunath, St. Thomas More Academy; Sam Chase, Chase Hill Academy (Home school) and Jeonghum "JJ" Lee, Cary Academy. American Legion Post 1 is proud to once again partner with local merchants to recognize exemplary performance by a member of the Raleigh Police Department. The Post 1 Police Officer of the Year Award was held on February 12 to recognize the outstanding achievements of one of Raleigh’s finest. Sgt. Brian Lampe seen here with WWII Veteran and post 1 member Dick Deutsher is this year’s recipient. The official award ceremony was preceded by a meal. The event was attended by Sgt. Lampe’s family and friends (photo to left of family receiving gifts). A large contingent of co-workers gathered to celebrate the accomplishments of Sgt. Lampe. Chief of Police, Cassandra Deck-Brown was also on hand to honor his achievements. Many of his supporters expressed how deeply grateful they were to have the opportunity to attend the banquet in honor of Sgt. Lampe. North Carolina American Legion 2014 ConferenceOctober 23-25. Post 1 held its annual Firefighter of the Year awards ceremony on April 9 to recognize the outstanding efforts of the department’s firefighters. The 2014-2015 recipient is Ben Averette. In attendance to see Ben accept his award were his family, friends and numerous firefighters. 3rd Vice Commander Ernest Charles read a poem dedicated to firefighters. His poem underscored firefighter’s service to their community, state and nation above and beyond the call of duty. The ceremony also included gifts for the family that were donated by local businesses and members of post 1. Ernest closed the ceremony by thanking firefighters for putting their lives on the line for us every single day. Ernest also thanked the local businesses and veterans who continue to support this program. Donation to Legion Baseball: We ask all members to donate $25.00 or more to the baseball program. One of the main reasons for you to join American Legion Post 1 is that longing inside of you to recite the pledge of allegiance again with fellow veterans. You miss standing beside your brothers-in-arms singing the national anthem. That emptiness that you miss inside your heart is called patriotism. You can regain that feeling by joining Anthony Bonapart, Ernest Charles (photo) and all the members of American Legion Post 1.
