On January 12 Commander Bonapart Judged the District
11Oratorical Contest sponsored by Apex Post 124. Coorganizer and Post 1 member Gerry Coleman did a great
job organizing this event. The environment at the event
was warm, encouraging and well attended by members of
the community. The contestants were all outstanding and
included: Daniel Kunath, St. Thomas More Academy;
Sam Chase, Chase Hill Academy (Home school) and
Jeonghum "JJ" Lee, Cary Academy. The photo to the left
is commander Bonapart posing with the contestants.
American Legion Post 1 is proud to once again partner
with local merchants to recognize exemplary
performance by a member of the Raleigh Police
Department. The Post 1 Police Officer of the Year Award
was held on February 12 to recognize the outstanding
achievements of one of Raleigh’s finest. Sgt. Brian
Lampe seen here with WWII Veteran and post 1 member
Dick Deutsher is this year’s recipient.
The official award ceremony was preceded by a meal.
The event was attended by Sgt. Lampe’s family and
friends (photo to left of family receiving gifts). A large
contingent of co-workers gathered to celebrate the
accomplishments of Sgt. Lampe. Chief of Police,
Cassandra Deck-Brown was also on hand to honor his
achievements. Many of his supporters expressed how
deeply grateful they were to have the opportunity to
attend the banquet in honor of Sgt. Lampe.

Post 1 held its annual Firefighter of the Year awards
ceremony on April 9 to recognize the outstanding efforts of
the department’s firefighters. The 2014-2015 recipient is
Ben Averette. In attendance to see Ben accept his award
were his family, friends and numerous firefighters.
3rd Vice Commander Ernest Charles read a poem dedicated
to firefighters. His poem underscored firefighter’s service
to their community, state and nation above and beyond the
call of duty. The ceremony also included gifts for the
family that were donated by local businesses and members
of post 1. Ernest closed the ceremony by thanking
firefighters for putting their lives on the line for us every
single day. Ernest also thanked the local businesses and
veterans who continue to support this program.
Donation to Legion Baseball:
We ask all members to
donate $25.00 or more to the

Patriotism: Your search for patriotism ends at American
Legion Post 1. One of the main reasons for you to join
American Legion Post 1 is that longing inside of you to
recite the pledge of allegiance again with fellow veterans.
You miss standing beside your brothers-in-arms singing the
national anthem. That emptiness that you miss inside your
heart is called patriotism. You can regain that feeling by
joining Anthony Bonapart, Ernest Charles (photo) and all
the members of American Legion Post 1.

Each month has its own thought-invoking dates -April 4 (1818 -Congress decided US flag is 13 red &
white stripes & 20 stars), May 3(1784 - The U.S.
Congress formally created the United States Army), &
June 3(1916 - The National Defense Act is signed into
law). Approaching them with a sensitive insight as to their
relevance to our overall heritage may contribute to a more
profound understanding of what that really is.
