RESIDENT’S REPORT
Hello Comrades;
Our Mission
I would like to open by first extending condolences on behalf of myself and the Branch
to John Griffith’s family. John passed away recently and had been a long time
member of Branch 44 and an integral part of the Branch's success. He served the
Branch in many capacities, most notably as a founding member of the TVS Key Tag
program and a vociferous advocate for our veterans. Thank you John.
Thank you to all those who attended our March St. Paddy`s Day General Meeting
where we had the opportunity to savour some fine Irish fare prepared by Stephen
Tresidder and fine Irish soda bread made by myself, Jane Anderson and Barb Walter
Venne. As always, thank you to Kandys Merola for her endeavours on the
entertainment committee bringing it all together and making it a fun evening.
Also, thank you to Shawn Venne and Robin Crickmay-Schaff for volunteering their
time to do an audit and prepare the Internal Audit report.
I feel I should note that I was selected as the new Deputy Vancouver Zone
Commander where I will serve alongside Jane Anderson, Zone Commander, who of
course, is also our second Vice President. In those capacities we attended the most
recent BC /Yukon Provincial Executive Council meeting.

process of preparing for our fundraising event, and for those that may want to help
please contact Brenda or Barb Walter Venne. Most importantly, I ask as many of you
as possible to participate at the event to help raise as much funds as we can so we
can give more to the community.
In closing, I hope you are all having a Happy Easter season and are enjoying our
marvelous spring. Come join us at our April 16th meeting in celebrating the season.

AST POST - John Griffiths
GRIFFITHS, John Mark
It is with heartfelt sadness we announce the passing, of our father John Mark Griffiths at the
age of 95, on March 6th. Dad was born on July 9, 1919 in Gwaen-Cae-Gurwen, South Wales
to Edgar James and Lizzie Kate. He was predeceased by his wife Eileen Grace in April of
2011 and brothers Tom and Marshall and sister Marian. He is survived by his children: Gail
(Richard), Mark (Livvy); grandchildren: Sam (Shawna), Sara (Charles), Denielle and Grant;
and great- grandchildren: Gage, Angus, Kristopher, Abigail, Amelia, Tycesen; his brother
Donald and extended family. Dad came to Canada in 1931 with his mother and two brothers,
Donald and Marshall (brother Tom and sister Marian were born in Canada), settling on the
West Coast. Dad served overseas during WWII with the RCASC, returning to Canada in 1943 suffering the effects
of tuberculosis. Dad was greatly assisted by the Tuberculosis Veterans Association – Branch 44 during this time.
After convalescing in Victoria for a year, Eileen and John met and were married in Vancouver in 1945. Mom and
Dad lived in North Vancouver until 2006 when they moved to Vernon. Dad loved to travel and took many trips,
mostly on his own with a backpack staying in hostels. But a favourite was the one he and Mom took to Australia
and New Zealand. Next to travelling, Dad loved to fish and in his trusty Gai Mar II he spent many hours in the "salt
chuck" trying to catch the big one! Dad had a number of careers over the years, his pride and joy being the work
he did with the TB Vets- Branch 44 as their General Manager. He worked tirelessly to develop the Tag Association
and assist fellow veterans during his tenure with the Branch. The family would like to thank the staff at Canterbury
Court for their kind care and friendship; the IHA Care Aides who visited Dad daily; the staff at Vernon Jubilee
Hospital on both the 2nd Floor West and 3rd Floor North during his last weeks and Dr. Borchert and his staff.
~Grffwys mewn heddwch Dad~
A Celebration of Life Tea will be held Saturday, April 11, 2015 between 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. at Canterbury
Court (3011 Gateby Place, Vernon). You are invited to leave a personal message of condolence at the family's
on-line obituary @ www.MyAlternatives.ca.

AST POST - MARGARET PEGGY TAPPING
Margaret Elizabeth (Peggy) Tapping
TAPPING, Margaret Elizabeth (Peggy) September 12, 1923 - March 11, 2015 (Born Margaret E. Insley of
Vancouver, BC). Mom passed at peace and ready to be with Glen. As a nurse at St. Paul's, Vancouver, during
WW II, she contacted Kidney disease which she fought to the end and it finally took her at the Priory Hospital,
Victoria. She was a true example of the last great generation. She had a long fulfilling life and enjoyed her family
and friends which was a very large group. Eastern Star was a big part of her. Peggy is survived by her 2 sons,
Craig and Ross, her 3 grandsons John, Ryley and Reid, her brother David (Joyce) and sister Sheila (Doug) and
the large extensive family group. Peggy wanted to thank all her family and friends for a beautiful long enjoyable
life. She wished her ashes be put by her husband Glen Tapping, at a simple graveside ceremony this summer in
Revelstoke, BC.
Peggy was a proud supporter of the Legion. Peggy’s husband, Glen Tapping, passed away in 1998. Glen was a
Past Branch President and 53 Year Veteran Life Member of Branch 44. Peggy always considered herself a
Legion member. Five years ago when she learned she was not actually a member she immediately filled out the
application form and joined as an Associate. Her son Ross has been a member for 19 years and grandsons;
John ,11 years and Ryley, 9 years.

ICK AND VISITING E.. by Catherine Schaff
We all at Branch 44 were sad to hear of the passing of John Griffiths in Vernon. John was the backbone of
TB Vets in the early years. Peggy Tapping in Victoria also passed away. She was a strong supporter of the
Legion and a proud Legion member. We send our sincere condolences to the families.
Ruth Hurley still has her arm in a sling but sends her best wishes to all at Branch 44.
Jim Irvine received a round of applause upon his return to meetings after his fall.
Skip Skipworth does not venture far from home. He is still waiting for hip surgery which he expects will be done
sometime in May.
Roy Carlson, a Branch 44 veteran, now living at Inglewood Care Home in West Vancouver has been moved
from the 2nd floor to the first floor where he is doing well.
Jean Reynolds in Osoyoos is back home from the hospital after undergoing hip replacement surgery.

get grants and rebates from BC Housing and Fortis BC to
recover $76,000.
Project 15 on Vanness Avenue in Vancouver had a major
security breach on December 24th. Mailboxes were
broken into as well as the site office. As a result, for
tenant safety, all locks were re-keyed at two properties.
They are now changing the way they do things with
regards to private information kept onsite; office safes,

OKE
One day my Gramma was out, and my Granddad was in charge of me.
I was 2 1/2 years old and someone had given me a little 'tea set' as a gift. It was one of my favourite toys.
Granddad was in the living room engrossed in the evening news when I brought him a little cup of 'tea', which was
just water. After several cups of tea and lots of praise for such yummy tea, my Gramma came home.
Granddad made Gramma wait in the living room to watch me bring him a cup of tea, because it was 'just the cutest
thing!' Gramma waited and I came down the hall with a cup of tea for Granddad, and she watched him drink it.
Then she said, (as only a Gramma would know), "'Did it ever occur to you that the only place she can reach to get
water is the toilet?"
