QUICK FACTS & ORIENTATION WHO ARE WE? Our Team(s) are unique within organized individual and team sports. There are NO tryouts. Regardless of your fitness, endurance or skill level if you’re ready to commit you’re on the Team. You ride! You race! There is NO bench! We value and promote individual as well as Team excellence. Whether it’s finishing your first race or standing on top of the podium as a Team we believe ordinary Student‐Athletes can attain big results through setting personal goals and giving a dedicated and disciplined effort. Is cross‐country mountain biking dangerous? Forget what you’ve seen on TV and YouTube with the X‐Games and Red Bull Rampage. In cross‐country bike races, the average speed is usually around 6‐8 miles per hour. This is an endurance sport where the fittest athlete wins. Statistically, we suffer fewer serious injuries than most mainstream sports, specifically contact sports. We do our best to minimize the risks to the athlete. Certain risky behaviors are discouraged and against Team and League rules. Bike control and handling skills are taught early in the season to minimize the risk of crashing and injury. Even with our best efforts, crashes and injuries can occur. TEAM COMPOSITION 1. Metal Mashers Mountain Bike Team are registered as teams of the Utah High School Cycling League (utahmtb.org), and organized under National Interscholastic Cycling Association (NICA, www.nationalmtb.org) 2. This team is the “Junior Devo” team to support Lehi, Saratoga Springs and Eagle Mountain Junior High school students who wish to participate and race within the Utah High School Cycling League. 3. The team is coed consisting of 7th – 8th Grade Junior High School Student‐Athletes. 4. The team is supported by 2 coaches plus ride leaders to coach, train and assist Student‐Athletes. 5. Many of our Student‐Athletes are not involved with other sports, and see mountain bike racing as a chance to develop their athletic skills in a safe comfortable environment with likeminded peers. 1 TEAM VISION: The Junior Development (Jr. Devo) program is designed to introduce 7th and 8th graders to the sport of mountain biking focused heavily on fun, fun, fun, skills, fitness, and NICA’s “Spirit of Howdy” with a small taste of the competitive aspects they will find when in high school. TEAM MISSION: Establish an enduring, fun and relevant mountain bike program to improve the lives of riders and families. TEAM FOCUS: Life‐long health. Mountain biking is a lifesport, a sport that individuals often start at a very young age and continue throughout their life. Training with our Team provides life lessons in fitness, nutrition, self‐discipline, teamwork and sportsmanship. FIVE CORE TEAM PRINCIPLES: 1.

SEASON REGISTRATION: Registration opens at the Parent Meeting on April 23that North Stake Property (2790 North Center Street) at 7 pm. Registration closes for all student‐athletes on May 28th.Please do NOT contact a Coach on how to register prior to the Parent Meeting on April 23th. COMMITEMENT: If you are ready to commit, and abide by team rules, you’re on the Team. We treat each team member as a responsible young adult. Student‐Athletes are expected to attend all scheduled practices and show a dedicated consistent effort. If a rider has previous commitments that preclude them from participating at practices, prior arrangements can be made to make‐up practices. (see Team Rules) TRAINING &PRACTICES: Starting July 1st practices will be held 2 times a week throughout the season. Student‐
athletes are expected to attend all scheduled practices and show a dedicated and disciplined effort. Student‐
Athletes will use TeamSnap to mark attendance (download “TeamSnap” app, you will receive an email to join team) Our practice schedule is designed in phases so that each Student‐Athlete is prepared for the race season. First, is the “SKILLS” phase where we ride at lower speeds, teach bike handling, safety, and gradually increase ride 2 duration to build a solid foundation of fitness. Second, is the “BUILD” phase to add strength and power by increasing the amount of hill climbing and ride duration. The last, is the “ASCEND” phase where we add faster race‐paced simulation. After the first 3 weeks of “orientation” Student‐Athletes will be split into skill based groups to appropriately challenge each individual rider. Each week riders will be evaluated and may be moved to another group to better promote their training. RACES: Junior Devo events are focused on providing a fun and educational environment to introduce the riders to the sport of mountain biking and NICA’s core principles. Race distances will vary depending on ability level, ranging between 4‐8 miles. There are (3) races throughout the season. The first is a “prologue” event which consists of a skills practice and a race on Saturday, August 15, 2015. This event is exclusive to the Junior Devo teams. The location of the prologue has not been determined. The remaining 2 races will be held the Friday afternoon before the High School races (on the following Saturday). The Friday afternoon races will be held on Friday, August 28 at Soldier Hollow, and Friday, October 9 at Eagle Mountain. Travel arrangements and accommodations are the responsibility of the family and parents. Check out UtahMTB.org and go to Junior Devo link for more info on actual race times. Student‐Athletes are required to arrive 1 hour before racing begins, attend the Team Meeting and stay through the duration of the event to cheer on all teammates. There will NOT be any overall scoring (however, riders may check their individual race times). Race day medals will be given to the top finishers in each of the 3 categories. There will NOT be any team scoring. FEES& EXPENSES 1. TEAM FEES: $150 due by June 3rd  payable by Paypal ([email protected] or check to: Metal Mashers Mountain Bike Team.  (includes Team kit (jersey, shorts), skilled instruction, 2 practices/week from July 1 ‐ October 9, team& coaches registration fees, team equipment & supplies, race day nutrition, team banquet (main course) and awards.
2. NICA and LEAGUE REGISTRATION FEES: $30 due prior to ANY rides ‐ first one is May 7th.  You will receive an email inviting you to the “Pitzone” where this payment will be made. You will also be directed to complete an electronic waiver. 3. RACE ENTRY FEES: $30/race, $90 for all three races FUNDRAISING Individual Fundraiser: To assist Student‐Athletes in paying their team fees, we are offering an individual fundraiser. This means, you earn the money for any passes sold. We are selling car washes to Mister HotShine (by Target in American Fork). If you choose to participate, you will receive 5 passes for a Full Serve Car Wash – interior/exterior (sell for $14, earn $7) and 5 passes for an Express Wash ‐ exterior only (sell for $8, earn $4). Team Fundraiser: We are holding a team fundraiser on May 26th from 3 – 8 pm at Chick‐fil‐A. Please hand out flyers, use social media, and word of mouth to spread the word! We earn 20% of the sales we bring in! 3 Sponsorship: We need team sponsors! Please contact business to request sponsorships. In addition to helping our mountain bike teams, they receive a few perks such as logo placement on our jersey and tent wall. For every $250 worth of sponsors a student‐athlete brings to the team, they will receive $50 off their team fees. SCHOLARSHIP FUND Both the League and Teams have established a Scholarship Fund to assist those Student‐Athletes that may not otherwise be able to participate due to the expense. The League and the Teams also have bikes available for Student‐Athletes which don’t have access to or cannot afford a new bike. Please contact a Coach for further information. Obtaining all of the equipment can be challenging. Prices vary widely and much is available used. We have partnerships with several of our local bike shops to provide Team members with discounts. Please contact a Coach if you have any questions regarding equipment as well as prior to contacting local bike shops. PARENT PARTICIPATION & INVOLVEMENT We are a volunteer lead organization and therefore, need your help. We need parental involvement in every area of running these teams. We will need ride leaders, ride support, race day support, team party coordination, and more. Please provide one volunteer per family. You can designate how you want to volunteer for the team on the registration form. In addition, someone from each family is required to volunteer during one race, there are many options available (see utahmtb.org).Please report this to our race day parent volunteer. Sportsmanship – You represent our Junior High schools, our team, and cycling in general. Display sportsmanship during all events. Treat teammates, coaches, spectators, and officials with fair play and respect. Being considerate of others will assure a unified team. Student‐athletes on the trail can be imposing to other users. Say “hi” and slow down to pass oncoming trail users. Bullying and cliques are not our standard. Helmets – Helmets are required. Under no circumstances will a rider (parent or student) be on their bike without a fastened helmet. Team members will set the example for following this rule always. (see NICA 2015 Rules & Guidelines) Safety – Jr. High School Mountain Biking is not an extreme sport. Practices and racing are fun and fast, but must be within the limits of the athlete. Coaches will focus on teaching safety and skills. Taking risks beyond your ability will not be tolerated. Safe speeds are relative to terrain and experience level. You must be able to stop safely within the distance that you can see ahead. Approach switchbacks and turns in anticipation that someone is coming the other way. Respect ‐ Ride only on authorized trails. Never ride on muddy trails. Pass with care and let others know of your presence well in advance. Pedestrians with pets on leashes have the right of way. If a horse is on the trail, stop and let it pass. Sometimes it may necessary to dismount and get off the trail to allow others to pass. Headphones are not allowed during team rides or races. Attendance & Participation – Each member is expected to fully participate in practices, training, and at least one trail or service projects. Riders will be allowed no more than 3 unexcused absences. Failure to meet these expectations may result in removal from the team. Excused absences should be approved in advance and will be approved by the coaches on a case‐by‐case basis. Absences after August 15th should be limited to primarily educational or other school based conflicts. All absences will require a make‐up ride signed off by a parent or verified through electronic ride trackers. Team members are expected to arrive on time for practice and are responsible for marking their own attendance. Service & Volunteering – Each member is expected to fully participate in service projects and to enroll family and friends as volunteers for the team needs and for one race day. Our teams are dependent on volunteers. Practice Groups – Coaches will structure practice into several groups to accommodate and help riders of all levels to develop. We welcome feedback from students and ride leaders about grouping assignments. However, ride groups are assigned by the coaches and it is critical to ride in your assigned group and give a best effort within your assigned ride group at each practice. Failure to stay in your assigned group will be considered an unexcused absence. If a rider voluntarily quits a practice ride without advance notice, mechanical problem or specific illness more than once, the rider will need to bring a parent or other volunteer to ride with them to be allowed to participate in the next practice. Bicycles & Maintenance – Team members will be expected to come to practice and races with a functioning and properly maintained bicycle. Bike problems on the trail such as flats are a normal part of riding and coaches will be teaching basic bike maintenance skills throughout the season. Riders will be expected to learn and perform basic on‐trail repairs. Riders are responsible for the condition and safety of their own bicycles. Injuries – Any injuries or medical conditions that would affect your ability to safely ride a bicycle must be reported to your coach. It will be the coaches’ decision to clear riders again after an injury and may require medical release as determined by the coach. Any reported possible concussions will require medical release before returning to practice. 10. Medical – Any student‐athlete with a medical condition will carry with them at practices and races any needed medications and supplies. Coaches will be notified of such conditions at the beginning of the season. 11. Team Transportation Consent Form
Metal Mashers Mountain Bike Team is a non‐profit team that does not receive financial support from the schools of its members and thus cannot provide transportation to and from any races and/or pre‐
race rides. It relies upon volunteers and parents to transport students to the races. Races are on Fridays and one Saturday and are scheduled for Solider Hollow, Eagle Mountain, and one other (TBD) in 2015. Consequently, students are expected to behave properly in vehicles transporting them. Students whose conduct is unacceptable may be prohibited from racing. Repeated inappropriate behavior may result in removal from a team. Parents are requested to sign the transportation consent form below and return it with all other forms. Student‐athletes without signed forms will not be allowed to participate. Coming off a great year in 2014, we are seeking sponsors to get
involved and be represented as supporters of our teams. We are nonprofit organizations without school support. To successfully run a
team, we need financial support.
Our focus is to instill a love of mountain biking and wellness in our
youth. Our teams are all-inclusive and provide a place for youth to
find friendship, self-confidence, and learn dedication. Our teams
practice and race from May to October. Every student races at every
race - no one sits on the bench! What other sport can provide that?!?
We live in the best place in the country for mountain biking! With more than 800 student-athletes racing in 2014,
it is expected to double in 2015! This sport is growing exponentially and is positively impacting our community’s
youth and their families.
