Lemon Road Enrichment Activities
Spring 2015
School administration, teachers, and the PTA work cooperatively to provide afterschool enrichment
activities for Lemon Road’s students.

Teacher-Led Clubs- These activities are run entirely by teachers, and are primarily for students in the
upper grades. Teacher-led clubs are listed in the schedule below but the PTA is not otherwise
involved. There is typically no cost to participate, but fees may be required to cover supplies,
materials, and/or club-specific spirit items during the course of the session. Teacher-led after school
clubs are not necessarily limited to those presented within this flyer. Be sure to refer to your student’s
Wednesday packets for other announcements and activities that may occur during the school year.
Questions regarding these clubs should be directed directly to the club sponsors.

PTA-Sponsored Afterschool Enrichment- PTA-sponsored afterschool enrichment activities are
organized and coordinated by the PTA. Tuition fees for these classes are used to cover teacher and
vendor pay, as well as necessary supplies, where applicable.
Below are afterschool enrichment descriptions for the Spring session, which begins the week of April 13,

classmates, and most of all have fun! Students are requested to bring a water bottle and to wear
sneakers and appropriate clothing for the weather that afternoon – we will go outside on almost
every occasion.
Each practice will feature the following components:
Warm up-Students will learn drills/ stretches that are necessary to get their bodies ready for
physical activity.
Technique: Students will learn how to maximize their efforts through proper technique and
form.
Workout- Students will be put through a variety of workouts to increase their aerobic capacity,
and overall speed.
Team Building- Students will work together in teams competing in various relay exercises
General Strength- Students will engage in exercises to build their overall upper body, lower
body, and core strength.
Because of the high demand last year (over 65 students), the club will be offered to students on an
alternating basis: Grade 6 will meet EVERY WEEK (since it is their last year at LRES). Grades 4-5
and Grades 2-3 will work out as separate groups on alternating weeks. We want students to be
able to have coaching within a manageable group size, and adequate space to workout. The 6th
graders will also be able to serve as mentors to the younger students when they work out with
grades 2-3. Please see the meeting schedule below.
Grades 4-5-6* will meet on April 15th, April 29th, May 13th, May 27th, and June

If you have any questions please email Sean Miller at [email protected]. Students will be enrolled
on a first-come, first-serve basis. Additional information will be sent home via email once your

We’ll keep our little ones moving in this combo class! Big Swing Wiffle Ball isn't baseball – it's
better! Everyone gets hits and no one strikes out in this version of America's favorite pastime. The
fundamentals of throwing, catching and hitting are taught through games like Soft Toss, Base
Runners, Home Run Derby and 500 Flies. Both new and seasoned players will love getting BIG hits
with our favorite game, Tennis-Racquet Baseball. It's wiffle ball with a racquet! No real baseball
equipment is used to ensure a safe playing environment. Students will also love Kaboom Kickball, a
playground favorite! Knock it out of the park with a big kick and use those same feet to motor
around the bases. This program is all about playing the game and will focus on teamwork and
sportsmanship. Sign up today before it's going, going, GONE!

cardiovascular fitness. We will emphasize proper body alignment so children can avoid injury and
promote mental and physical health with a positive attitude toward exercise. Breath control is an
integral part of yoga and meditation. Children will learn to value their breath. Breath meditation
teaches children to deepen and slow down their breath and be calm and inward focused. It is a
valuable skill that they will utilize their entire lives. The class is suitable for all physical abilities.

Spring 2015
Enrichment Activity Policies
Activity descriptions, registration forms and the below policies are available on the LRES PTA website at
www.lemonroadpta.org. If you have any questions, please contact the Afterschool Coordinators (Dawn Alexander or Kristin
Brace) or email us at [email protected].
1.
Registration forms and payment must be received by the afterschool coordinators before your child may participate. Parents
will receive a confirmatory email indicating your student’s placement in their requested class. Activities are filled in order of
receipt of the registration form and payment. If your student is not placed within their requested activity, the coordinators
will contact parents to coordinate other options and/or will return payment. A minimum number of participants must sign
up for each activity to run. If the student minimum is not met, the activity will not be held. Please make checks payable to
Lemon Road PTA.
2.
Enrichment activities will not be held on FCPS student holidays or early dismissal days. Cancellations of activities are rare but
do happen: activities are cancelled if FCPS cancels afterschool activities; and may also be cancelled due to teacher’s illness. In
each instance, parents/guardians will be notified by phone or email by the afterschool teacher, afterschool coordinators, or
by the school. In the event of cancellation, students will be sent home at normal school dismissal.
3.
Financial assistance is available for families in need (such as those who qualify for free and reduced lunch). Financial
assistance applications are available in the Lemon Road office and on the PTA website. Applications must be submitted to
Mr. Camarda with the registration form, prior to dismissal on March 27, 2015. Mr. Camarda will make the determination for
financial assistance and applicants’ information is kept confidential.
4. In the unfortunate event that a disciplinary issue develops in an enrichment activity, the coordinators will consult with school
administration, parents/guardians of the student(s), and the instructor/coach to resolve the situation. If a student is asked to
leave due to discipline issues, no refunds can be given. Additionally, refunds will not be provided for classes missed by a
student due to school absences.
5.
Parents/guardians should remind students each morning before school that he or she has an afterschool enrichment activity.
It is the child’s responsibility to stay after. Classroom teachers, office staff and administrators are given activity rosters and
every effort is made to get children to the appropriate location.
6.
Dismissal Procedures are as follows:
Parents must provide transportation for their child at the end of the activity. There are no buses provided and only students
who walk to and from school daily may walk home. Students must be picked up at the kiss-and-ride at the rear of the school
at the end of the enrichment activity. Regular kiss-and-ride policies apply: remain in your car and wait for the instructor to
dismiss your child to you. Do not get out of your car or have your child enter the driving lane. SACC students will be escorted
back to the SACC room.
Please refer to the course descriptions for class dismissal time. Approximately 10 minutes after dismissal, students will be
brought to the front lobby to wait for pickup and the authorized adult will need to come into the school to sign the student
out as a late pickup.
7.
Late Pick-Up Policy is as follows:
Lemon Road and the PTA do not have provisions for supervising students after the class ends. Please arrive promptly based
on your student’s class dismissal time. Late pick-up fees will be incurred beginning 10 minutes after class dismissal. Late
pick up fees will be provided directly to the class instructor and will be incurred as follows:
st
 1 occurrence, parents should enter the school lobby and sign the child out.
nd
 2 occurrence, parents/guardians should enter the school lobby, sign the child out late, and will be charged $10 plus
$1/minute past dismissal as listed above.
rd

rd
listed above. Also after the 3 occurrence, the child may no longer attend the after school class, no refund will be
