What is Derby Day? It's a healthy, active and fun way for all Longview Farm students to earn funds for their school without selling anything. This year's Derby Day will be held on THURSDAY, APRIL 30th (rain date is Thursday, MAY 7th). Each student will participate as part of his or her special class! Running or walking is fine! PARENTS, GUARDIANS and FRIENDS OF THE FARM WILLING TO VOLUNTEER CAN DO SO BY RESPONDING TO THE SURVEY FORTHCOMING. The event will take place at the entrance area to the historic Longview Mansion. Thank you to the Mansion staff for their participation! How does it work? Students in grades K-6 can acquire pledges from family and friends (even those located out-of-town) or simply make a donation to the event. Use the pledge sheet your child brought home today indicating how you'd like your child to participate. Ask your employer if they will participate, too! Lastly, if you are part of a company or organization and you feel they might contribute, please encourage them to pledge! We are hoping to raise $8,900.00 during Derby Day this year, which would equate to $15 per student. Students that donate at this level will have their name placed in a grade level drawing for a special Derby Day grade level basket that will be presented to them on the last day of school if their name is selected! Why should we participate and pledge? The biggest reason is because it is fun for everyone who gets involved, especially the kids. Also, Derby Day is a great opportunity to raise funds for the school that does not involve selling anything; it integrates the Long family legacy into the lives of our Stallion students, celebrates the uniqueness of our school, and it gives all of us great exercise. 100% of the funds raised go directly to the kids, their classrooms and special proiects on the Farm. It is our hope that with funds raised during this year's Derby Day, all student back-to-school t-shirts for 2015-16 will be cost-free to families! We would also like to purchase an end-of-the-year 6th grade photo for each of our 6th graders as they leave LFE as a way to remember their elementary school and classmates as well as pay for their sling pack that they take with them to SLMS labeled with an LFE alumni crest on the front pocket of the pack. We'd like to use raised funds to once again eliminate the cost of students' assignment books to families. Collecting Pledges: The pledge sheets are due back to school with no money by Friday, April 24th. Following Derby Day, the pledge sheets will be returned to all students identifying the number of laps walked/ran. The kids contributing through pledges need this information as they do goal setting in PE prior to the walk/run. Then it is their turn to collect the pledged amount. Cash or checks are both acceptable. Checks may be made out to LFE Activity Fund are both acceptable. Collected pledges and the pledge sheet itself are to be returned no later than Friday May 15th please. Students simply collecting donations are also asked to return those contributions by the May 15th date as well. The Raising of the Derby Day Flag: The 141st Kentucky Derby will be raced on Saturday, May 2nd. In the spirit of those 141 years, an LFE "Revelation" Relay Team will collectively run 141 miles as a countdown to our Annual Derby Day on the Farm! This relay will take place in "legs" and consist of LFE parents/guardians, patrons, and Team Pride Staff members. This relay will be run on a bit longer route than the kids and will occur on Wednesday, April 29th. The Raising of the Derby Day Flag ceremony will take place school-wide at approximately 3:10 PM on our west side—around the flagpole and Revelation's gravesite that same day. The ceremony will end close to 3:30 so kids are able to go back into the building and prepare for their 4:00 dismissal. We are hoping Louie, our LFE mascot, will once again lead our students down Longview Road to school as 7 of our student pacer runners will assist Dr. R. in raising the Derby Day flag! Walk to School Day: To close our exciting week of celebration, we will take part in a SPRING Walk to School Day just like the one we had back in October! The information pertaining to Derby Day Walk to School Day is attached to this information. Please take note of this and we hope to have massive participation in this fun community-based event. We ask students to wear their BLACK KEEP CALM AND FARM ON t-shirt on this day! A student led Spirit Stallion Assembly will end our exciting week held at 9:30 on May 1 st. Please be watching for sign up surveys for both the Revelation Relay Run event as well as Derby Day itself! The more involvement we have, the smoother these events operate. We thank you in advance and appreciate your role in all the special events we do here at Longview Farm! It continues to make LFE uniquely special! We are hoping to get as many families, friends, and businesses involved in our Derby Day event at Longview Farm this year, so this letter is to encourage your participation. There are many ways to be involved in our event! We are in need of volunteers being at stations during the Legacy Walk/Run on Thursday, April 30th anytime between 9:00-3:00.
