President’s Message
As you read this edition of the Bookmark, you will see many
references to volunteers and their importance to the success of the
Friends of the La Habra Library. Certainly, praise for our volunteers
is well founded. Along with the contributions made by our volunteers,
we need to mention our patrons, many of whom have been customers
in the bookstore for many years.
Almost daily, books that were bought at our bookstore are
re-donated and sold again. One may wonder how we can be a
significant support group for the library, when most of our sales are in
the 10¢-50¢ per item range. We are a significant support group, and,
for that, we need to acknowledge the role of our patrons. Whether
our patrons spend 25¢ or $10, they are a vital cog in the machinery
that keeps our bookstore going.
There are still many who do not realize we have a used
bookstore within the library. Help us get the word out by telling your
friends, and members of organizations to which you may belong,
about the wonderful bargains and wide-range of subjects to be found
in our bookstore.

From the Branch Manager
I am so pleased to announce that we have added three new staff members. Juan
Gomez began in February and previously worked at both Santa Ana Public Library and
Anaheim City library. Jessica Smith recently earned her B.A. in English literature, which
included a year abroad in Swansea, Wales. She has volunteered in libraries and has
several years of restaurant work experience. Our third person will start in April. At that
time, we will be fully staffed for the first time since September 2013. I am excited about
the new programming and outreach to the community that we will be able to offer with our
new staff, once they’ve been trained.

We have a number of upcoming programs this spring, including participating in the
Citrus Fair, the Young Authors’ Fair on April 16, and our long-awaited Thomas the Tank
event for young people from 4-8 years of age. Beatriz has lined up a full slate of activities
this spring for adults. And keep your fingers crossed that OCPL is awarded one of the
NEA Big Read grants, which would take place in October-November. Beatriz and David
are also working on three different grant proposals as part of their Staff Initiative Fund and
Beatriz’ participation in the Eureka! Leadership Institute.
I am also very excited about two new computers we’ll be unveiling in the next few
weeks. These computers have no Internet access and instead are loaded with education
software designed for preschoolers through early elementary school students. They were
bought with funds authorized by the Friends and will be part of our early learning service to
families. Thank you so much!
One big event coming up is Literary Orange on April 11. Our annual all-day event
features two intriguing keynote speakers: Anne Perry, mystery author, and Emily St. John
Mandel, whose latest book, Station Eleven, was a 2014 National Book Award finalist.
Online registration is open at www.literaryorange.org and includes lunch,
continental breakfast, and three sessions of author panels. I am moderating the Memoir:
Live, Explore, Be panel and can already tell you that these writers alone are well-worth the
trip to the Irvine Marriott. Alex Tizon is a Pulitzer-prize winning journalist; Teresa Rhyne
writes with humor and grace; Lily Brooks-Dalton’s love affair with motorcycles chronicles
a year of change and growth; and Leigh Ann Henion spent a year searching outstanding
natural phenomena. Do join me in an exhilarating day of authors.

Adult Services
Thank you to the Friends of the La Habra Library for your continued support. The
Adult Services Department has proudly hosted a number of successful, inspiring and
diverse programs for the La Habra community during the winter months. In January of
2015, New York Times Bestselling author Victor Villaseñor was received by a crowd of
approximately 200. Recently, the Leading From All Walks of Life event welcomed local
women from the community to share their triumphs and trials. We would like to thank our
community partners: Starbucks, Corner Bakery, National Charity League, Northgate
Gonzalez Markets, Krispy Kreme Donuts, Señor Campos, Memo’s Flowers and Amber
Gould for their time and generosity. The event was uplifting and we hope to make it an
annual event. The Adult Services department cordially invites you to please join us for the
following scheduled programs:
Sunday, April 19th @ 2:30pm Meet author Joshua Davis of Spare Parts. Spare
Parts, recently released as a motion picture, is the story of four undocumented MexicanAmerican teens from West Phoenix who, ten years ago, represented their underfunded
high school in a national NASA robotics competition in California. These four teens risked
the threat of deportation and other obstacles; follow them as they battle for the American
dream.
Wednesday, April 22nd (English presentation) and Wednesday, April 29th (Spanish
presentation) @ 6:00pm: Celebrate Money Smart Week with the Orange County Credit
Union as they share numerous budgeting tips on saving money to reach your financial
goals. Learn how to build a budget to plan your spending, limit over-spending and make
sure that you reach your short-term and long-term financial goals.
Saturday, May 23 @ 1:30pm-3:30pm, Join author, radio host and nutritionist Luz
Maria Briseño as she shares her passion for nutrition and her message of good health
amongst the Latino community. Briseño is a popular Spanish speaking talk show host, her
radio show, Curvas Peligrosas (Dangerous Curves), airs on Jose 97.5 FM locally MondayFriday from 12-1 p.m.
Adult Volunteers, As of January 1, 2015 Orange County Public Libraries requires
all adult volunteers to consent to a background check as part of the volunteer application
process. Background and registration forms can be obtained at the Information Desk. La
Habra Library is thankful to all volunteers and would like to encourage new volunteers to
join us. Volunteers are an essential part of our community.
Computer Classes are back! If you are interested in learning or brushing up on
your computer skills, please sign-up at the Information Desk. La Habra Library offers free
computer classes in both English and Spanish throughout the month. For inquiries about
the classes, please contact Jill Patterson or Beatriz Preciado at 562-694-0078.

Teen Scene

The Teen Advisory Board has switched gears
this year. We have moved our meeting days from
Sunday to Friday and are now meeting once a
month. And we have shifted focus as well. The TAB
board has been interested in a variety of ways that
we can give back to the community. This includes
activities like getting together materials for Earth day and encouraging others to plant
vegetables, flowers, or herbs in their garden by providing seeds, pots and soil. They are
also excitedly coming up for things that they want to do for the summer reading program
this summer. We have had some regular attendees as well as some new faces at the
meetings this year and continue to look for any teens
interested in taking a leadership role in the community
to come on by.
It’s been exciting to see the teens continue to
get involved with our Homework Help program and
contribute to its continuing success. Most of our teen
tutors from last semester have returned to work with
the kids. So far this winter we have had 33 teens
volunteer to work with the elementary school students
on Monday through Thursday from 4:00-5:30. It has been nice to see their dedication to
the program and to see them working with the children on their schoolwork. It’s also
been gratifying to see the smiles on the grade school kids’ faces. Given the fact that we
have had about a hundred different kids use the program this year, the teens must be
doing something right.

Children’s Corner
With the excellent assistance of our new library assistant, Juan Gomez, it looks like our
Thomas the Tank Engine program might finally get out of the Station! We shall be issuing tickets to
24 participants, and having a jolly good day out of it on Thursday, March 28th. Much thanks to
our baker extraordinaire, Dolores Greenberg, who is perfecting little soft pretzels and train cookies
to sit on cups for our sit-down snack. More information and registration forms coming soon.
Our Homework Help, Read to the Dog, Family StoryTime, Bilingual StoryTime and ABC
Kids Pre-school StoryTime continues until the middle of May. Registration and the Pre-SRP
activities begin on June 8th. Our first Summer Reading Thursday Spectacular is on Jun 11 for a
percussive musical program, Splat, Boom, Bang! which should be a lot of fun. Our theme this
year is Read to the Rhythm, so we will be hearing a lot of music in the library! Big excitement—
a bagpiper is coming in for a program on Thursday, Jun 25th. We are hoping to have lots of little
Mini Concerts in the library during the weeks of Summer Reading. So, the call is out for musicians
who play instruments and/or sing to participate. The Mini Concerts will consist of ten to twenty
minutes of music and then be gone like the wind….sort of like a flash concert that you see on
YouTube, but scaled a bit down with a date and time you can select. The pieces are still coming
together for this one, but it should be a lot of fun! Please contact me or Jill if you would like to
participate. Let’s show kids how much fun music can be!
A little bit more mundane, but still important, we are collecting empty oatmeal cartons for
craft drums this summer. We need about 60 cartons, so eat your fiber!! Thanks!
We are one of only three selected library branches collaborating with the Orange County
Department of Education for the Young Authors’ Faire this year. The festival, on Saturday, May
16, will spotlight young writers and stimulate their creative juices; we will also have children’s book
author, Drew Daywalt, author of the best-selling picture book, The Day the Crayons Quit as a
speaker.
As always, thanks so very much for being there for us!! Could not do it without our
Friends.

Thanks to Our Volunteers

Many thanks to our wonderful volunteers. The bookstore could not run
smoothly without you. We still need a few more volunteers for both a regular
2 hour shift and as a substitute on call. An application is available in the
bookstore. You can leave it with the volunteer at the desk and you will be
called.
Our newest volunteer, Richard Fierro, is at the desk every Friday.
Thank you, Richard.
We would like to thank Sandra Flournoy, Lucille Trinkle and Vicky
Propst for their many hours of dedicated service as bookstore volunteers.
Circumstances prevent them continuing as volunteers at this time. We would
like to let them know how much appreciate all the hours they have donated to
the bookstore. We also thank Kay Volgstadt, a long-time member of the
Board of Directors. Kay has submitted her resignation and she regrets that
she is no longer able to serve on the board. In the past, she has served as
vice-president and co-president. Thank you Kay for all that you have done
for the Friends.

In Mark Forsyth’s pamphlet-style volume praising bookstore browsing, he writes, “A book shop
is a room where you find what you never knew you wanted, where your desires can be perpetually
expanded”. (L.A. Times 10/26/14) When you visit our used bookstore, you are sure to find this to be
true.
We have recently changed the location of some of our books in order to make them more easily
accessible. We have also started a new category titled “Collections”. Here you will find 10 or more titles
by the same author shelved together. New donations are shelved daily and we usually have a monthly
special. In March, all VHS videos were on sale for 10¢. In April, we will have many children’s books in
the foyer for 10¢.
So come in and browse and you may find something “you never knew you wanted” and also that
special book that you have wanted for a long time.
