From the Principal:
Student Leaders
Congratulations to all of our 2015 Year 6 student leaders who received
their badges and a certificate from Mr Tony Smith at a special assembly
last Tuesday. It was lovely to see so many proud parents and
grandparents in attendance and to share a cuppa afterwards.
GRIP Leadership Conference
Last Thursday, over 2000 students from across Victoria attended this special student
conference at the Melbourne Convention Centre. I
had the pleasure of accompanying Brodie, Brayden,
Caitlyn and Tayla (the lucky replacement for Ava who
is on holidays). The children learnt how to be
generous with their Time, Talent and Treasure as they
make the most of their leadership opportunities.
Our leaders came away inspired and will be sharing
some of the things they learnt with the rest of the Year
6 leadership team.
Student Safety
I have spoken with children on a number of occasions recently about the importance of
safe play at school. Teachers also spend time supporting students to develop safe
practices in the classroom and school yard. As Principal, I am responsible for the safety
of all 373 students throughout the school day. The questions I ask students to consider
are:
Am I being safe?
Am I being respectful?
Does my behaviour promote learning?
To ensure all students are as safe as possible, we have a number of school rules which
I have included in the newsletter.
Please take the time to read through these with your children.
Everyone has the right to feel safe and learn at school
I will
keep my hands and feet to myself.
I will never leave the school ground without the permission of a teacher.
I will be suitably dressed in uniform including a school hat in terms 1 and 4
I will be courteous to and honest with teachers, and other adults and children.
I will care for others’ feelings. I will not fight, tease, bully, swear or interfere.
I will allow others to learn without interference.
I will use my learning time wisely.
I will do my part to keep the corridors, rooms, toilets, equipment and school grounds,
clean, tidy and undamaged.
I will not go into classrooms during learning sessions or at morning and lunch recesses
unless directly supervised by a teacher.
I will be on time for class, school assemblies and other activities
I will play in the correct areas. This includes not being in the car park, gardens and on
rock walls or behind the MPC. Climbing in trees and on fences and rock-walls is not
allowed.
I will walk quietly in and near school buildings and play away from doorways and toilets.
I will not bring valuable or dangerous toys to school unless arranged by my parents with
the teacher. For example, skateboards, roller blades, ipods, mobile phones etc.
Mobile phones and other electronic devices must be named, handed in at the office and
collected at the end of the day.
I will not interfere with another person’s property.
I will use playground and sporting equipment sensibly and safely.
We continue to have a wonderful school community, by working together to promote a
safe learning and playtime environment for all.
SCHOOL COUNCIL ELECTIONS:
Thank you to all parents who voted in our School Council Election which closed on
March 6th . We had 65 ballot papers returned. We were indeed fortunate to have such
well-credentialed candidates and I thank all 7 candidates for their nomination to these
important roles.
After the counting of votes, our School Council for 2015 is comprised as follows:

There is also one Community co-opted vacancy and one 12month replacement

The contributions offered by our School Council members has been a significant
reason for the success of our students and the high standing we have in our local and
broader community. I look forward to working with the 2015 School Council.

GRADE 1/2
NEWS
A BIG thank you!
It is great to see all the support we are getting from parents and grandparents.
There are people helping with reading and mathematics, working with children
for support, helping with our Inquiry topic, our herb garden is up and running
and our cooking program is in full swing.
Without all this help many of our programs
would not be available for the children, so a
BIG THANK YOU to all involved.
Incredible Humans!
The students have attempted to beat many world records, along with creating their own
mini records. We have built card towers, domino trails and ran as fast as we could in an
attempt to beat Usain Bolt.
As part of this term’s Inquiry topic the students have been rehearsing a favourite talent of
their choice. Students will be given the opportunity to
showcase their talent, if they wish to do so, at Lilydale West
talent show.
The talent show will be held on Thursday 26th in the
Gymnasium from 2-3:30pm!
Parent are welcome to come along and witness the amazing
talents.
Harmony Day!
Friday 27th DRESS-UP DAY
For a gold coin donation you are invited to dress-up in your national
costume or the one of your family, as a true blue Aussie (no thongs or
singlets though!), in Indonesian dress or in orange (the official colour
for Harmony Day)!
YEAR 3/4
NEWS
On Thursday 5th March all Year 3 and 4 students, along with teachers
and parent volunteers went for a walk to both Yarra Ranges Regional
Museum as well as the Lilydale Lawn Cemetery.
The students discovered a lot about the Lilydale area and surrounds,
why particular ‘historical’ objects are welcomed in to museums and
information about noteworthy people of the past, who lived in the area.
Thanks again to the volunteers who came along on the day.
We stopped at the old Lilydale museum and decided
what would go in a museum and what wouldn’t on
the table. Then we went over to the Collector’s gallery and we had to find things that were on the piece
of paper.
After that we left the museum.
After the museum we walked to Melba Park and we
had lunch. When we were finished we were allowed
to go and play for half an hour.
Then we walked to the old lawn cemetery and saw
dame Nellie Melba’s grave. We prayed to her and we
got to see someone’s nose bone.
Then we headed back to school and once we got back
everyone was so exhausted from such a long walk!
I had the best day ever and learnt lots.
The Year 3’s and 4’s went to the museum and
cemetery. Some parents and teachers came as well.
Year 4’s went to the cemetery first, we went to the
museum.
At the museum we split into two groups. My group
looked at the old stuff, we had had to guess what the
things were. My favourite thing was the shoe stretcher,
it was cool.
Then we went to the other side of the museum.
We got a board and a pencil and we had to guess the
objects around the room that were on a sheet.
We walked to the park and had lunch, after lunch we
walked to the cemetery, it was a long walk.
When we got there a lady showed us around.
We saw some pretty cool graves.
One grave had a bone in it.
Over 1000 people were buried there.
When we were walking back we were very tired.

Reminder: If you haven’t sent back the camp notice please do so in order for the teachers to
finalise numbers. It is important that it is returned even if your child is not attending and this is
indicated on the notice.
YEAR 5/6
NEWS
Are you eSmart??? We’re Learning to be!
During these last few weeks of term the year 5/6s
will be looking at how to be cybersafe and
eSmart, as are other year levels across the school.
In the technological age we live in, it is crucial that
all children are equipped with the skills needed to
keep them safe. In the same way we teach children
to be wary of strangers in their day to day life, it’s
important we teach them to be careful and wary of
the risks that they are exposed to on the Internet.
It is equally important that we ensure our children
are respectful and responsible users of the
Internet themselves. At LWPS, part of this
process is to have all children and parents sign an
Acceptable Use Agreement. This went home last
week. We encourage all families to sit down and
have an open discussion about this agreement, so as
to ensure all children understand what they are
agreeing to and why this is an important step to
keeping them and others safe.
In Year 5/6, as part of our eSmart lessons, the
children will be completing a quiz on ‘How
Cybersmart are you?’, which will be used as a basis
for discussion about the hidden risks we didn’t know
about. They will also be working through the
‘budd:e’ online program, which covers a variety of
cybersecurity skills.
Want to know more about being
cybersafe?? We encourage you
have a look at the cybersmart
website.
YAY! It’s
Camp
Week!!!
While you are reading this
the Year 5/6s and their
teachers will be having a
fabulous time at Camp
Allambee and Camp Westie.
We can’t wait to share all
our wonderful adventures
with you…. But you’ll have
to wait
until we
get back!

Great effort guys!
After some fantastic performances at the District Swimming
Trials, the students above qualified for the Division
Swimming Championships at Nunawading, whereby they all
performed very well. Taylah T and Hanna M were both very
close to winning their races, but still qualified for the
Regional Championships with their 2nd placings. Our 11yo
Girls Freestyle Relay team also finished 2nd, which also
earned them a place at the Region level. The girls should
all be very proud of their efforts at the Regional event, which involves competitors
from schools all the way from the city, out to the Yarra Valley, including the top
independent schools.
