LILYDALE HIGH SCHOOL Melba Avenue, Lilydale 3140 Telephone: 9735-5644 Facsimile: 9735-3552 Email: [email protected] Website: www.lilydalehs.vic.edu.au March 5, 2015 Dear Parent/Guardian, Students in the Year 10 Philosophy class have the opportunity to attend a workshop at the Melbourne Zoo to focus on some key epistemological and ethical issues, such as - How is animal thinking different from human thinking? Can they reflect on their lives? Could an animal have a conscience? - Are animals aware of themselves? - Do animals have some sense of right and wrong? - What sort of rights should animals have, if any? Here is the itinerary. Gather at the William Street gate of Lilydale High School at 8:50 am, Thursday April 16th; mark rolls and walk to Lilydale station to catch the 9.15 am. Arrive at Royal Park at 10.37 am. From 10:40 am to 11:30 am – Early lunch at the Zoo. Philosophy discussion at 11:40 am. From 12:30 am to 1:30 pm. Complete questionnaires while observing a chosen animal. Return to Royal Park station for 1:44 pm train. Head for Southern Cross station, to catch the 2.00pm train which will arrive at Lilydale at 3:03 pm. Failing that, we take the 2:12 pm train to Ringwood, change for Lilydale train (arrive 3:33 pm). It is strongly advised that students bring a packed lunch and something to drink. Students must be in school uniform. Appropriate rainwear would be useful if the weather is inclement; or a hat and sunscreen if it is sunny. As an added precaution, we would prefer students to bring a mobile phone and provide supervising teachers with the number. Cost of zoo entry is $19 (Students will need to bring their Myki card to pay for train travel). Please complete and return the indemnity form below and return it in an envelope together with payment to the school office no later than Wednesday March 25th, 2015.
