Farmer’s Market EBT In 2014, Healthy People Lincoln County received a grant of $8,250 from the Wisconsin Department of Health to provide the markets with the technology and resources to accept Quest/EBT cards from Food Share participants. This allows Food Share to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables from local Farmers’ Markets. Markets also received start up funds from Ministry Good Samaritan Health Center and Ministry Sacred Heart Hospital. With the commitment of all three farmers’ markets in Lincoln County and community partners, the program was successfully implemented in July of 2014. The following participating markets are: • Merrill Area Farmers Market • Tomahawk Main Street Farmers’ Market • Tomahawk Farmers’ Market The Merrill Area Farmers Market also expanded their market to a second location at Ministry Good Samaritan Health Center. Circle of Support for mental health People were trained with Question, Persuade, Refer (QPR) Training in 2014. This suicide prevention training provides the tools to recognized the signs of suicide and provide help. “BeSAFE”: Safe, Affirming and Fair Environments – curriculum training was provided by UW-Extension and Ministry - Good Samaritan Health Center. The curriculum is designed to help young people (11 to 14 years) and adults work together to create environments that are physically and emotionally safe. 14 adults and four youth representing 11 different groups attended. 5/17/14 “Alcohol Screening and Brief Intervention for Youth: A Practitioner’s Guide” was implemented by Marshfield Clinic – Merrill physicians. The tool helps healthcare providers quickly identify youth at risk for alcohol related problems, including mental health issues. The screening targets 9-18 year olds during healthcare visits, such as physicals, well-child or emergency room visits. For a copy of the Lincoln County Mental Health Resource Guide visit us at: www.healthypeoplelincolncounty.com Our Burden of Suicide… Data from “The Burden of Suicide in Wisconsin” (2007-2011), released 2014: 28 Suicides (rate*: 21.2 vs WI at 14) 77 Inpatient Hospitalizations (rate 58.3 vs WI at 112) 63 Emergency Department visits (rate 47.4 vs WI at 53) * Per 100,000 people Key Findings – Statewide: Adults aged 45-54 experience the highest suicide rate by age. Nearly 4 out of 5 people who die by suicide are male. Firearms was the most used method. The following are components of the program: 1. Classroom Education 2. Oral Health Exam 3. Placement of Sealants 4. Three Applications of Fluoride Varnish The program has saved families over 5. Retention Check of Sealants $117,000 to date in dental costs. Sugar Day-☺ ☺ut In celebration of February Dental Health Month 2014, the Lincoln County Oral Health Coalition asked families and individuals to take the Sugar Out Day pledge to reduce the sugar they eat and drink for the day. Results: ☺ Kate Goodrich 4th graders received classroom education with 94% (48) pledging to reduce sugar for the day. ☺ Pine River School for the Young Learners’ parents and students received education and healthy snacks with 17 families taking the pledge. ☺ Maple Grove Hosted a school-wide event with interactive displays, healthy drinks, and classroom education, including 60% (60) taking the pledge. ☺ Tomahawk Elementary 64% (35) of second graders took the pledge. The classroom received a healthy basket of snacks for their raffle prize. Students, day after the event, did not order chocolate milk. All classrooms received a healthy snack and oral health care supplies. A raffle winner received a basket of healthy snacks to take home ☺ Several Community members and businesses also took the pledge. 2014 HPLC Recognition Jane Bentz, Ministry Good Samaritan Health Center is recognized for her leadership in Oral Health. Jane has been instrumental in providing leadership in Lincoln County in the areas of Oral Health. Her enthusiasm and dedication provides innovative and creative outreach on good oral health hygiene and practices to the youth in Lincoln County. She has been a leader in the first annual Sugar Out Day event and Children Safety Day Camp in 2014. She also is an advocate and coordinator of the Ministry Good Samaritan Health Center’s Tooth Fairy fund for individuals in need of dental care. Three individuals have gone the extra mile this last year by creating a new program at their Farmers’ Markets. These markets have add the ability for Food Share participants to use their EBT (Quest Card) at the market to purchase healthy fresh fruits, vegetables, breads, dairy, etc. We would like to acknowledge their work and dedication to public health. The purpose of the curriculum is to provide training to partners who work with youth to create a safe, affirming , and fair environment.
