Test-taking season is rapidly approaching, and Line Creek wants students and parents alike to be ready. Solid preparation is, of course, key for students to be as relaxed as possible on test day, and ultimately perform at their peak. During April and May, students in grades 1-5 will be taking important district and state assessments. Students will be assessed using the MAP (Missouri Assessment Program) and the Terra Nova. These challenging tests will measure whether students are learning what is expected of them at their grade level. Mark your calendars for Thursday, April 23. Line Creek will host our second annual CAREER DAY. If you would like to be part of career day and spend some time sharing information about your career with our students, please contact your child’s teacher. Last year, we had many visitors and learned so much about the interesting careers of our parents that we can’t wait to expand our day this year to include YOU! Be sure to contact your child’s teacher today. Research shows students do best on tests when they receive lots of encouragement from parents and teachers and develop a positive attitude. These are some things you can do to help your child do well on these tests: Make sure your child is well rested and eats a healthy breakfast each day of testing. Make sure your child attends school and arrives on time on testing days. Avoid scheduling appointments or vacations during this time. Speak positively about the test. Your attitude is contagious! Encourage your child to have a positive attitude about tests and listen closely to test instructions. Please refer to page 2 of this newsletter for detailed dates on when your child will be testing during April and/or May. Both the Terra Nova and MAP assessment will be taken on the computer by students in grades 3-5; students in grades 12 will still do a paper/pencil Terra Nova assessment. All testing will occur before lunch. Please refer to both the April and May calendars for information on when your child will be testing. Please avoid scheduling appointments during your child’s testing dates. Summer School Park Hill Summer School is a free, fun, caring place for your child to learn during the summer. Students who will enter kindergarten through eighth grade in the fall will focus on academics in the morning and fun explorations in the afternoon. Summer school will go for a full day and include transportation. You can also purchase meals for your child during summer school. The deadline to enroll is May 6. Summer school date are June 1 —July 2. For more information about summer school, including enrollment, transportation and meals, see the district website, www.parkhill.k12.mo.us, under “Teaching and Learning.” The Terra Nova is a norm-referenced achievement test battery that uses multiple-choice questions to measure subject area content and process skills. In combination with MAP scores, the Terra Nova provides longitudinal data for the core content areas. Growth of students, schools, and the district can be monitored reliably from year to year. Scores are used to determine strengths and weaknesses, and are considered as part of decision-making processes, including program evaluation and school improvement. Scores are interpreted as how well students, schools, and districts are performing relative to the Missouri Learning Standards. Families with children entering Park Hill School District kindergarten in August 2015 may enroll now by visiting their local elementary schools between 7:45 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. Children who turn five on or before July 31 are eligible for kindergarten for the 2015-2016 school year. Parents will need to bring their children’s certified, state-issued birth certificate, immunization records and two proofs of residency to enroll. One proof of residency must be a lease or mortgage agreement. The other should be an original and current gas, electric or water bill on which the name and address are provided. If you do not know which school your child will attend, please check the district website at www.parkhill.k12.mo.us or go to the Park Hill district office, 7703 NW Barry Road, Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. to get the enrollment packet and locate your school. Feel free to call us at (816) 3594320. After you enroll, mark your calendar for the Kindergarten Roundup event at Line Creek on Monday, May 4 from 5:30 - 7 p.m. Parents and students will get a sneak peak of the school, tour the building, ask questions and get to know the staff. In Park Hill, students in grades K-4 are placed in their next school year classroom through the collaborative efforts of their current classroom teacher, specials teachers, counselor and principal. When applicable to the student, special education teachers, reading specialists and/or ELL teachers also provide input. This process is very deliberate and we strive to match student personalities, learning styles and needs to teachers matching those styles and needs. During this process, we do not accept parent requests for specific classroom teachers or requests specifying a teacher you do not want to be assigned. A Student Information Feedback form is available in the school office if you wish to provide additional information about your child. Completing this form is not required. If you wish to complete a form, please return it to your child’s teacher by May 8, 2015, and she will share this information during the class placement process. Each year, all Park Hill Schools select two staff members to represent their school at the Northland Excellence in Education Banquet. One staff member is selected for their Excellence in Classroom Teaching and the other for their Excellence in Service to Education. Line Creek will again be represented very well this year by Shelly Fischer for outstanding classroom teaching and Lori Morris for outstanding service to education. They will be honored at the banquet held on April 21, 2015. In addition, Park Hill annually selects nominees from each building to receive the Staff Spirit Award. Shelby Culver will be honored as Line Creek’s Spirit Award winner at Park Hill’s Service Award Banquet held on May 7, 2015. Please join me in congratulating each of these amazing Line Creek staff members. We are proud to have them represent Line Creek and Park Hill! Take Your Child to Work Day Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day is on Thursday, April 23, 2015. To accommodate parents/guardians working for businesses that plan career awareness events for this day, the Park Hill School District has made a provision allowing students not be counted absent on this school day dependent on the completion of a reflective work day assignment. This assignment will be designed by your child’s classroom teacher giving your child the opportunity to reflect and share information about his/her day at the work place. If your child is planning on attending Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day events, please complete the form included in this email and return it to your child’s teacher prior to April 23, 2015. This form will be kept on file in the office so you will not be called regarding your child’s attendance on this day. Early Release Day….coming soon Thursday, April 23, 2015 at 1:30 p.m. On Thursday, April 23, all Park Hill elementary schools, including Line Creek Elementary, will dismiss at 1:30 p.m. This early release day will provide an opportunity for teacher training and collaboration, as part of our ongoing continuous improvement efforts. The high schools already have a similar late-start or early-release time, and the middle schools have built-in collaboration time. Next school year, we will have monthly elementary early release days. This year’s early release day will allow us to work through the details to make this work for Park Hill families.
