GREAT WAKERING PRIMARY SCHOOL NEWSLETTER YEAR 1 AUTUMN 2014 Dear Parents,

GREAT WAKERING PRIMARY SCHOOL NEWSLETTER YEAR 1 AUTUMN 2014
Dear Parents,
Welcome to Year 1.
Our theme this half-term is Out and About. We will be learning about features of the environment
and the surrounding areas of the school, as well as following and making maps. We will also be
preparing different food and using our senses to taste these. In English we will be learning to retell a
story and writing instructions.
After half-term our theme is Who’s afraid of the big bad wolf. We will be learning to retell a
traditional story, looking at different types of materials and looking at some key events in the past.
As in Reception, we change your children’s books weekly and they will be taking part in guided
reading on a daily basis, two of these sessions being with an adult. Please continue to read and
enjoys stories with your child at home, as shared time with a book builds up that valuable love of
reading and stories.
In your child’s Reading Together book you will see the Zero tolerance spelling words for the year
group. We will be learning these in class throughout the year but any extra help you can give your
child at home will be greatly appreciated.
In Maths we will be concentrating on number, including addition and subtraction, before moving
onto shape and measurement.
Homework will be given out every Friday and will need to be back by Thursday.
PE for Hedgehog Class is on Monday and Wednesday and for Badger Class is on Tuesday and
Thursday. Please ensure your child has their PE kit in school at all times. If your child has earrings
please remove them for PE days or send in tape to cover them during PE lessons. When the weather
gets colder your child will need long trousers for PE sessions.
Please ensure all clothes and book bags are labelled with your child’s name.
Do remember we have ‘Open Door’ on Tuesday after school 3.10-3.30, when you can come into your
child’s class and look around.
Finally if you have any more queries, please do not hesitate to come and ask.
Year 1 Staff.
