Sessions – 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM (registration begins at 8:30 am)
Where: First United Methodist Church, 127 N. 4th St., Vandalia
PD Hours: 5 Hours per day
Presenters: Tricia Stephens, Mulberry Grove CUSD; Laura Arney, Altamont CUSD
and Mary Adams, Retired Teacher Mulberry Grove CUSD
Fee: $10 a day per person (to cover the cost of an on-site lunch, morning & afternoon snacks)

Text Complexity: (AM) – Mary Adams, Presenting
This session on text complexity will cover the anchor standards 1 & 10. The participants will
learn about how text complexity is defined, quantitative measures of text complexity, qualitative
measures of text complexity, matching readers to texts and tasks and close reading of complex
narrative as well as informational text at various grade levels will be used to launch discussions
among participants.
Academic Vocabulary: (PM) – Tricia Stephens, Presenting
Learn about what general academic vocabulary in the New Illinois Learning Standards is and
how to identify it in your texts, learn strategies from Marzano, Beck, and other vocabulary specialists
that you can incorporate into your classroom/teaching.
Learn about/further your knowledge of tier 1, 2, and 3 words categories. Delve into tier 2
words: words students are going to read most frequently in many grade level texts and situations, but

may be slightly out of reach for students. Discuss ways to identify and choose tier 2 words for your
school/classroom and strategies to teach these words.

Text Dependent Questions: (AM) – Laura Arney, Presenting
Further your knowledge of the New Illinois Learning Standards for ELA & Literacy by analyzing
appropriate ways to use text-dependent questions. The group will focus on using reading
instructions that stays closely connected to the text, the importance of arguments and evidence in the
New Illinois Learning standards and classroom practices that encourage students to return to the text
for text-based answers and evidence. Several different classroom activities and examples will be
presented.
Writing to Sources: (PM) – Tricia Stephens, Presenting
Further your knowledge of the New Illinois Learning Standards for ELA & Literacy by analyzing
appropriate ways to have students write to sources. The group will focus on the emphasis on writing
from sources, becoming familiar with the New Illinois Learning Standards for opinion and informative
writing, and understanding the relationship between the New Illinois Learning standards reading
standards and writing standards. Several different classroom activities and examples will be
presented.

Informational Text: (AM) Laura Arney, Presenting
This session will look at the 10 Informational Text reading standards from the New Illinois
Learning standards for grades K-5. Participants will identify the standards that may be new (or a new
emphasis) for them. Instructional strategies and approaches will be shared to incorporate these
standards. The session will contain time to determine quality sources of informational text.
Additionally, the session will contain time to work, collaborate, and plan what materials and
approaches that teachers can adapt or add to their own classroom curriculum to meet these
standards.
Bringing the Shifts Together: (PM) – Tricia Stephens, Laura Arney & Mary Adams, Presenting
This session will be a time set aside for participants to take the information that they learned in
each of the sessions and put it all together. There will be time for sharing, discussion and
collaboration. The presenters will be facilitating, as the participants have time to develop a plan of
action for implementation of the shifts in their own classrooms.
