Your interview - Animation and Games Design - Level 3

Your interview - Animation and Games Design - Level 3 - UAL
Thank you for applying for a course at Westminster Kingsway College. You have been invited to attend an
interview. Interviews are an opportunity for you to meet tutors face-to-face, find out more about the College
and really demonstrate why you want to do the course. This is your chance to shine!
Remember to:
• Re-read your application form and try to anticipate the questions they will ask. For example, think
about the career you would like, why you want to do the course and why you would be a suitable
student.
• Prepare some questions to ask. For example, ‘Will I have the opportunity to go on work experience?’
‘What kind of practical assignments will I be asked to do?’
• Plan how you will get to the College and leave plenty of time for delayed trains or buses. You may not
be able to go into an interview if you are late.
• You can never look too smart. Remember first impressions do count, so try not to smoke before the
interview, chew gum or leave your mobile on.
• Be prepared. Bring examples of your work and research the course before the interview. Above all else
be enthusiastic about the course, be polite, smile and look directly at the tutor.
The purpose of the interview is to help you choose a programme of study that fits your interests, your strengths
and your future career or study plans. You will be able to ask us questions about the course and studying at
WKC. We will give you advice based on your predicted or current grades and your reference from school. We will
also be interested to hear anything that you feel is important and relevant about yourself.
At the end of the interview we will normally make you a conditional offer based on your predicted or current grades
and/or other qualifications you may be taking. If you already have qualifications to meet our entry
requirements you might be given an unconditional offer. The offer will state the course that you have chosen
following our discussions with you.
If, later, you wish to make changes to your programme, perhaps following your results, you can discuss this with
us when you come to enrol (usually at the end of August for conditional offers and may be earlier for nonconditional offers). We will be happy to amend your programme if there are places available in the new
programme of study that you have chosen and you meet the entry requirements.
What will happen in the interview?
The interview is an opportunity to ask the College questions about the course and tell us why you want to
study at WKC and what your future career and study plans are. We will also discuss your previous experience
of media, and what qualities you believe are needed to study media.
You will be asked questions about the media and the representation of groups in it. You will also have to describe
a TV programme or film you have seen recently.
A writing activity will be set, which will be based on a printed advertisement supplied in the interview. You will
need to write about the advertisement using the first paragraph to describe it and the second paragraph to say
why you think it was made in that way.
Your interview - Animation and Games Design - Level 3 - UAL – continued
How long will the interview take?
Please allow 2 hours for the group work, skills test and interview.
How do I prepare for my interview?
We would advise you to read the relevant course section of the prospectus and think about what the course
involves, your future career and study plans and why you would like to become a WKC student. Consider the films
and TV programmes you have watched recently, the newspapers you read, why you like these forms of media,
what you think of stereotyping in the media and what you would make a documentary, film or programme on.
You may want to think about whether you are a follower or a leader and the issues that can arise when working in
a group.
What will I need to bring with me?
•
Certificates for any qualifications you have already completed or predicted grades
•
A record of achievement or academic reference from a previous place of study.
•
If available, please bring examples of media work, such as short films, storyboards, scripts, essays or
reviews. For the games and animation pathway, bring animations, character designs or storyboards.
•
We would also advise you to bring details of any learning support you may require
•
If you will be aged under 19 on the 31 August please bring one of the following to your interview:- Passport
- ID card
- Full Birth Certificate
- Other (eg Home Office documents)
We will ask to see one of the above documents when you come to your interview. This is for identification
purposes. Please note unfortunately we do not accept as ID a Photo Oyster Card or provisional/full photo driving
licence.
We will also ask to take your photo – ready for us to produce your college ID at a later date. This may help
reduce the time you wait to enrol later on in the year. Thank you for providing this information.
Will I have to take a test?
You may be asked to do an initial assessment in English (literacy) and/or Maths (numeracy). If you are dyslexic or
