It was a quiet morning as I drove to this morning’s LMBC gathering. No
one was at the troll booth as yet and I saw no ducks crossing in marked
walkway. However, it was a beautiful morning as the rain had cleared
the air the day prior. It’s one of those mornings that we salute as Ed
Rorke leads us in a chorus of “Oh…What a Beautiful Morning!” just as
he had this day!.
The meeting, our 3911th to be exact, commenced a tad tardy… perhaps
we are all on Spring Break! President Tony Moglia got us off to a fine
start reciting the Ode correctly. We stood at the proper time and
Lee Douglas said “Let’s get this over with!” Ed returned to lead us in
“God Bless America. Judge John Sutter led us in the Pledge and BOG
member Kent Alexander gave our invocation examining how names
can separate us vs. a greater good of joining together towards a larger
purpose.
GUEST:
Our solo guest, Morgan Moglia gave a self-intro as we all know her and
welcomed her back as she visits her folks.

The absent CJ Hirshfield was resting up for her guest stint as a barkeep
at the Marriot this night. One dollar for each item ordered would go
directly to our CFL.
Tom Thatcher donated two A’s matinee tickets for this date. Tony
auctioned off the ducats and Lise Pearlman and friend will be attending
same. The Duck or the Foundation thanks you, Lise…not sure which.
Bob Rosen presented an update on the A’s game and tailgate events.
The April game is sold out…dinner still available. If you want to go to
the Boston game, not many tickets are left-CALL BOB!
VP John Notch gave a program update-see the front of the “Q” for
further details. Sounds like a visit to the SF B> Club is coming up.
Aileen Frankel is coordinating a lunch get together at the Laney BistroCulinary School….this helps members who are finding breakfast comes
a bit too early, continue to meet and greet. Meet about 11:45 am on
Wed., April 22nd.
Jack London George told us about a meeting re the hi-speed trains and
the new Transit Center. Tues., April 14th at 10AM, Hyrum Johnson State
Office, 455 Golden Gate Ave., SF-Milton Marks Conference Center.
George will be playing a song then.
RECAP:
Easter and Passover celebrations were enjoyed by many. Lee Douglas
said his daughter cooked a fine meal and we are all invited next year!
John Notch rode his motorcycle to Mt. Tam for a sunrise celebration:
beautiful!
REMINDER:
If you have an April birthday or Anniversary, next week is the time to
bring your checkbook. If you can contribute one dollar for each year…it
will go a long way to helping our deficit duck account!

REJUVENATE:
Prez called on the ‘lovely and vivacious’ Lorna to get us up and moving
after our Holiday treats. The song had a strange name - filled with
vowels…but… “it had a good beat and you could dance to it!” Noted that
our two guest speakers were up and moving along with us!!! Rick Curotto
asked Tony” you’ve been doing this for 35 years?” “Yes!” said Tony with a
smile.

GIFTS:
Ex two-timer Geoff Kline sauntered to the mic and was joined by John
Notch and Ed Rorke for the gift distribution segment of the morning’s
activities. Jokes included a psychiatrist visit, obstruction of views and
zippers. And the Oscar, I mean, the gifts went to:
Lorna Moglia will be enjoying Holly Tigard’s dad’ book on birthdays; Lee
Douglas will savor a jar filled with candy from Judge David Lee; He then
won a commemorative A’s seat cushion brought back from an inaugural
game by Lise Pearlman! Dr. Lauren Clum will be putting together the
pieces of Bob Hamilton’s jigsaw puzzle prior to the baby coming. The
Moglia Family contributed two special Italian Easter breads that will be
enjoyed by Rick Curotto and by Tom Tnatcher.
VOLUNTEERS:
We thank all those who make the meeting seem seamless:
Bill Hardenstine and Inga Forline, Marsha Weske on the sound board;
all the Greeters led by Jeff Wong which included Miss Holly Tigard, Joe
Guzman, Dragan Simikic and one other who eludes my memory, Dr. Eric
always is quietly helping and Exec. Rob Stewart had his had on the tiller.
Chef Robert and staff served us a fine hot breakfast-today with some
Easter ham slices and hotcakes. Thank you all as with our your service…
we couldn’t
do this!

PACIFIC PINBALL MUSEUM
When you hear the words Pacific Pinball Museum, you probably visualize
a penny arcade or one of those loud electronic game rooms at the local
mall. But the Pacific Pinball Museum is an actual museum with a mission
of “teaching science, art and history through pinball, and to preserve and
promote this important part of American culture. “
The Pacific Pinball Museum (PPM) is a 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization
dedicated to the promotion and preservation of one of America’s
great pastimes. They do this by operating the Pacific Pinball Museum
offering a selection of 90 playable pinball machines representing the
evolution of flipper pinball. Imagine a museum where there not only
aren’t any “Please do not touch” signs, but rather signs that encourage
you to actually operate the machines that are on display. They have
early machines from the ‘30s and ‘40s representing the birth of pinball
in America. In the front of their current location are the latest pinball
machines from Stern. Rotating exhibits highlight pinball art and artists.
The museum displays 10 huge pinball back glass murals by Bay Area
Artists. In order to display more machines, the museum rotates games
borrowing from their collection of over 400 working games. They teach
classes and make exhibits and exhibitions using pinball to educate about
history, science and art. They use pinball to get families and friends to
socialize with each other in a fun, colorful, and educational environment.
After more than a decade of preserving and promoting the game
of pinball, the Pacific Pinball Museum (PPM) now has an Exclusive
Negotiation Agreement with the City of Alameda to restore the vacant
Carnegie Library as their new home. This magnificent 1902 building has
sat vacant since 1998. This location will more than triple the museum’s
display capacity. The facility will also provide space for community events,
classrooms, exhibits and many other expansions to PPM’s already exciting
programs.

Since 2001, the museum has collected nearly a thousand pinball games
but has only been able to display about 100 at their Webster Street
location. A major portion of PPM’s collection dates from the 1930s to ‘50s
-- an era that has a certain accord with the library.
“It is extremely important to our mission that we occupy a building of
historical significance,” said PPM Board Chairman Larry Zartarian. “The
1902 Carnegie Library is a testament to American education and an ideal
location for the PPM to educate visitors about art, science and history as
related to pinball and its uniquely American heritage.”
City Manager John Russo put forth an offer to lease the Carnegie Library
and the attached property for 30 years. In return, PPM will be responsible
for completing the restoration and bringing the Carnegie up to current
day building code requirements. Upgrades will include new electrical &
plumbing as well as adding ADA accessibility, HVAC and Fire systems.
After spending more than $4 million in retrofitting and plans for the
library, the city began searching for a museum that could complete
restoration of the building. Pacific Pinball Museum has been successfully
drawing interested visitors to Alameda for 10 years now. The prospect
of having a having a larger pinball museum with many more displays
housed at the classic Carnegie library is exciting and should prove
to be an even more popular draw.
PPM needs to raise some $3.5 million in the next two years in
order to make “the Smithsonian of Pinball” in Alameda a reality.
Dedicated to preserving pinball history, science and art, the PPM
tells the incredible story of how American ingenuity combined with
culture and our fun-loving nature to create the ultimate interactive
kinetic art. PPM’s collection spans an era of broad technological
development that teaches about scientific advancement and
pinball art’s cultural reflection and impact on society.
Andrew Carnegie’s donation toward ongoing education of the
public should not be forgotten. Much like the Carnegie Library’s
story, pinball’s story stands at a crossroads where it could be
forgotten. The art, the technology, the American history behind
pinball, could be lost to future generations if not for this effort.

About our Speaker...
Speaker: Oakland Council member Abel Guillen
COD: Aileen Frankel
Before his election to the Oakland City Council in November 2014, Abel Guillen served as a Trustee on the Peralta Community College
District Board for eight years. As Trustee, he secured over $20 million in grants for career education and green jobs training, and
raised over $50,000 for scholarships for students from underserved communities.
In partnership with AC Transit, Guillen created the Peralta Easy Pass that saves students over $1,000 a year and has provided more
than 1.2 million bus rides for students since its inception.
While delivering eight consecutive balanced budgets, he reformed the Peralta Colleges’ fiscal management to eliminate bureaucratic
waste and successfully implemented measures to increase public accountability and transparency.
He also stood up to corporate special interests and Wall Street banks by moving the Peralta Colleges’ dollars to local communitybased banks that reinvest our money back in our local economy.
An experienced finance professional, Guillen currently serves as vice president of a public-finance consulting firm, where he helped
raise more than $3 billion in bond funding for classroom and school safety upgrades, repairs and improvements for public schools
and community colleges throughout California.
He was previously a research associate for the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Community Development Financial Institutions
Fund.
The son of a baker and a cook, Guillen grew up in a working-class Bay Area neighborhood, where he learned the value of hard
work early on. A product of local public schools, he went on to become the first person in his family to graduate from college. He
earned his bachelor’s degree in sociology and a master’s degree in public policy from UC Berkeley.
Hello Wonderful Volunteers!
Please come out to help with Oakland Head Start Day 2015! We need volunteers to help with a full day of
activities including registration, welcoming families to the park and educational activities.
When: Friday,
Time: 9
April 17th, 2015 a.m.-2 p.m.
Please RSVP and let us know if you’re interested in helping with all or part of the day by
emailing [email protected]
In 2014 we had over 2400 Oakland Head Start family members come in to explore the magic of Children’s
Fairyland. The exposure to enrichment activities like these helps close the achievement gap for low-income
children in our community.
