Overview of the CareerSource Suncoast Region

The unemployment rate in the CareerSource Suncoast region (Manatee and Sarasota counties) was 5.2 percent in May
2015. The region’s jobless rate was down 0.6 percentage point from 5.8 percent a year ago and 0.4 percentage point
lower than the state rate of 5.6 percent. Out of a labor force of 336,671, there were 17,442 unemployed residents in the
region.

Sarasota County (5.2 percent) had the highest unemployment rate in the two-county region. The unemployment rate in
Manatee County was 5.1 percent.

Nonagricultural employment in the North Port-Sarasota-Bradenton metro area was 277,400 in May 2015, an increase of
3.4 percent from a year ago. Statewide, employment was up 3.4 percent from May 2014 to May 2015.

The metro area gained 9,000 jobs over the year, led by professional and business services (+2,400 jobs). Other major
industries gaining jobs included trade, transportation, and utilities (+2,200 jobs); leisure and hospitality (+1,700 jobs);
education and health services (+900 jobs); manufacturing (+600 jobs); mining, logging, and construction and government
(both +400 jobs); other services (+300 jobs); and information (+100 jobs).

Financial activities was unchanged in the metro area.

The metro area’s over-the-year growth rates in professional and business services (+6.3 percent); trade, transportation,
and utilities (+4.2 percent), manufacturing (+4.0 percent); information (3.0 percent) and government (1.5 percent) were
stronger than the statewide growth rates in these industries. Financial activities was unchanged in the metro area but lost
jobs statewide.
