THE FIGHT IN THE FIELDS:
CESAR CHAVEZ AND THE
FARMWORKERS’ STRUGGLE
MONDAY, MARCH 30 AT 7:00PM

A CESAR CHAVEZ HOLIDAY

“The exquisite The Fight in the Fields… paints
a vivid portrait of a modern-day Mahatma
Gandhi.” – Oakland Tribune
More than two years in the making, The Fight in the Fields: Cesar
Chavez and the Farmworkers’ Struggle is the first film to cover the
full arc of Cesar Chávez’ life. Using archival footage, newsreel,
and present-day interviews with Ethel Kennedy, former
California Governor Jerry Brown, Dolores Huerta, and Chávez’s
brother, sister, son, and daughter, the documentary traces the
remarkable contributions of Chávez and others involved in this
epic struggle. The film follows the first successful organizing
drive of farm workers in the United States, while recounting the
many failed and dramatic attempts to unionize that led up to
this victory. Woven through this historical mosaic is the story of
Chávez’s life, from his adolescence as a migrant farmworker and
his early days as a community organizer to the the pivotal 300mile march he led from Delano to Sacramento and his friendship
and landmark political alliance with Robert Kennedy.
Chávez and many others helped bring about important changes
in farmworkers lives. Many of these things are now taken for
granted, such as getting fresh water and public toilets in the
fields, and larger reforms across the industry. The film pays
tribute to the tremendous advances made by Chávez and all the
men and women of the United Farmworkers Union who fought
for a stake in the American dream. (Dir. by Rick Tejada-Flores &
Ray Telles, 1997, USA, 120 mins., Not Rated/Suitable for all ages)

“Exceptional. Bristling with the energy and
insight of one of the most important social
movements of the 20th century.” – Sheri
Linden, Los Angeles Times
This rousing, provocative documentary resurrects the buried
history of the modern women’s movement in America from
1966 to 1971. From the founding of NOW, with ladies in
hats and gloves, to the emergence of more radical factions
of women’s liberation, the film focuses on the outrageous,
often brilliant women who founded the movement. Artfully
combining dramatizations, performance and archival imagery,
the film recounts the stories of women who fought for their own
equality, and in the process created a world-wide revolution. The
film doesn’t try to romanticize the early movement, but
dramatizes it in all its exhilarating, quarrelsome, sometimes
heart-wrenching glory. It also doesn’t shy away from the
controversies over race, sexual preference and leadership that
arose in the women’s movement. Featuring interviews with
early feminists Kate Millet, Fran Beal, Rita Mae Brown and
many others, She’s Beautiful When She’s Angry captures the spirit
of the time – thrilling, scandalous, and often hilarious. (Dir. by
Mary Dore, 2014, USA, 92 mins., Not Rated)

Dr. Who & The Daleks was the first big screen film adaptation
of British television’s most iconic sci-fi hero, and the first time
Doctor Who was ever seen in color! Created to capitalize on
the first explosion of “Who-mania” in the Swinging Sixties,
and based on a story from the original BBC TV serial, this scifi adventure stars British film legend Peter Cushing (Star Wars)
as everyone’s favorite eccentric Time Lord, Doctor Who. Having
invented the TARDIS, a strange machine disguised as a police
telephone box that’s capable of travelling into other dimensions,
the Doctor and his three young accomplices set forth on a quest
through time and space. Their journey takes them into the
dark, undiscovered depths of the universe and to the planet
of Skaro. This primitive world has been devastated by nuclear
war and is now populated by two warring species – a peaceful
tribe known as Thals and a deadly life form heavily mutated by
radiation, encased in protective machines. A merciless force of
destruction known as The Daleks! Can Doctor Who and his pals
help the peace-loving Thals defeat their monstrous enemies?
Exterminate! Exterminate! Directed by Gordon Flemyng and
now fully restored for its 50th anniversary, Dr. Who and the
Daleks is a fun romp filled with cool ideas, colorfully campy mid‘60s production values and a thrilling sense of adventure that
delighted the Doctor’s obsessive young fans back in the day.
Don’t miss this rare opportunity to see this classic on the big
screen, and enjoy the throwback to a time when a trash can and
a toilet plunger could be combined to create a terrifying robotic
adversary! (Dir. by Gordon Flemyng, 1965, UK, 82 mins., Rated
PG)

GENERAL ADMISSION: $6 • LOFT MEMBERS: $5
On the first Friday of each month at 9:00pm, Red Meat’s Max
Cannon hosts the biggest, baddest short film contest in town –
just bring us your short films and we’ll play them on the largest
movie screen in Southern Arizona!
In case you’ve never been to a First Friday Shorts show, here
are the rules: We’ll play anything you’ve made that’s under
15 minutes long and is brought to us on a DVD, thumb drive
or BLU-ray (one film per person, and DVDs must be playable
on a regular DVD player and films on drives need to be in by
8:00pm). Submissions are only taken on the day of the event,
and all entries MUST BE RECEIVED PRIOR TO THE START
OF THE ACTUAL SHOW (we cannot accept films after the
show has begun, or during intermission). All films are played
in the order they’re received. Every film is guaranteed to play
for 3 minutes, but after that the audience can call for the
dreaded “gong” if they’re displeased. If the gong is struck,
our intrepid host stops the film and the next movie begins.
But don’t despair … if your film is gonged, you can re-work
it and bring it back to see if the changes you’ve made have
pleased the audience. This is a great way for filmmakers to try
out new ideas and see how an actual audience responds, so
take advantage. You cannot submit the same film more than
once unless it has been re-worked. Remember, the audience
decides the winner each and every month, so keep them happy!
PLEASE NOTE: We only take the first 15 films that are brought in each
month and the spots have been filling up really fast. We start taking
submissions as soon as we open the day of the show so get your films
in early!
PLEASE BE ADVISED: Since we don’t pre-screen First Friday Shorts
entries, we don’t know what each month’s “film content” rating will be.
Be advised that some material may not be suitable for all audiences.
Congratulations to Grant Hunker and Luke Ralston for winning
the March contest with their short film, UnLuv!

“An eye-opening portrait of trailer-park
underground filmmaking… Adam Rifkin’s
documentary convincingly portrays the sense
of community fostered by Giuseppe Andrews’s
crazed passion.” – Carson Lund, Slant
While the rest of America slept, DIY filmmaker/
musician Giuseppe Andrews (a one-time teen actor
in Independence Day and Detroit Rock City) has made
over 30 experimental features with titles like Doily’s
Summer of Freak Occurrences, Trailer Town and Utopia
Blues. Set in some demented alternate universe (i.e.
Ventura, California), they are populated by real-life
alcoholics and drug addicts, trash-talking senior
citizens and trailer park residents dressed in cow
outfits and costume-shop wigs, acting out boozefueled vignettes of severe psychosis filtered through
Giuseppe’s John Waters-meets-Harmony Korinemeets-Werner Herzog sensibility. Following the
riotously eventful two-day production of Garbanzo
Gas, Giuseppe’s crude, comical avant-garde film
about a cow that’s granted a vacation from the
slaughterhouse, Giuseppe Makes a Movie, from
acclaimed director Adam Rifkin (Detroit Rock City, The
Dark Backward) is a hilariously compelling ode to lowbudget filmmaking and the underground spirit. (Dir.
by Adam Rifkin, 2014, USA, 82 mins., Not Rated)

“The film is riveting from the start.” – Ernest
Hardy, Village Voice
Occupy the Farm tells the inspiring story of a community
taking direct action to create a healthier and more just
food system and question the stewardship of a precious
resource: publicly owned urban farmland. 200 farmers
occupy one of the last pieces of farmland in California’s
urban East Bay, plant 15,000 seedlings to feed the
community and disrupt plans to build a shopping mall.
What happens next will change the fate of the land and
reveal a new strategy for activism. From tilling soil to
police raids, from lawsuits to overflowing harvests, Occupy
the Farm reveals a resourceful, creative, and determined
community as it fights against the privatization of the
land and responds with direct action to a serious social
need: access to healthy food. (Dir. by Todd Darling, 2014,
USA, 90 mins., Not Rated)

also of his species. It is a story of survival and inspiration. But even

old prejudices that put the future of wolves – and OR-7 – in jeopardy.

creaky country home and comes face-to-face with evil spirits, a demonic house

“The Neverending Story remains a wonderful
testament to the power of imagination and the
type of inventive cinema that was possible in
a pre-digital era.” – Thomas Caldwell, Cinema
Autopsy
This beloved ‘80s fantasy film is a grand adventure set in a
magical world where the greatest power is imagination. One day
while playing hooky, shy schoolboy Bastian Bux wanders into a
strange bookstore and discovers a novel called The Neverending
Story. As he reads the book, he becomes so consumed in the
unfolding tale that he escapes reality (and the bullies who
torment him) when he finds himself catapulted into the land
of Fantasia himself. Soon he’s drawn into an incredible world
of Rock Biters and Luck Dragons, Swamps of Sadness and a
destructive force called The Nothing that threatens to destroy
the entire kingdom of Fantasia. Delving into the story of the
brave young warrior Atreyu, the timid Bastian discovers that
he may actually hold the key to rescuing Fantasia. Can Bastian
save his new friends and return to his own world? Based on
the classic novel by Michael Ende, and filled with startling preCGI effects and elaborate puppetry work, The Neverending Story
spawned two sequels and stands today as a thrilling, out-ofthis-world adventure tale fueled by the power of reading and
dreaming. (Dir. by Wolfgang Peterson, 1984, USA/Germany, 102
mins., Rated PG)

“This is stellar pulp storytelling with a twist… a
lean and gripping thriller.” – Charlie Schmidlin,

A stranger in the increasingly strange city of San Francisco,
Japanese crime novelist Aki (Ayako Fujitani, Tokyo!) is unsure of
precisely what role she has to play in a real-life murder mystery
involving ambiguous MacGuffins and amorphous identities.
Unfolding in lonely places such as bookshops and hotel bars,
Dave Boyle’s (Big Dreams Little Tokyo) moody thriller uncovers
exhilarating new takes on genre conventions. Consequently, it’s
an alluring l’homme fatal who supplies Aki with the breadcrumb
trail of clues that entices her into a labyrinthine plot of sinister
dealings. In turn, the aging sheriff (veteran character actor Pepe
Serna, Scarface), who should rightfully be riding to her rescue,
proves to be equally out of his depth. The game is afoot, the
chase is exhilarating and the stakes are perilously high in this
inspired and offbeat neo-noir. (Dir. by Dave Boyle, 2014, USA, in
English and Japanese with subtitles, 111 mins., Not Rated)

Aldo Leopold is considered the most important conservationist of the 20th
century because his ideas are so relevant to the environmental issues of our
time. He is the father of the national wilderness system, wildlife management
and the science of ecological restoration. His classic book A Sand County
Almanac still inspires us to see the natural world as a community to which we
belong. Green Fire explores Leopold’s personal journey of observation and
understanding, It reveals how his ideas resonate with people across the entire
American landscape, from inner cities to the most remote wild lands. The film
challenges viewers to contemplate their own relationship with the land. (Dir. by

PART OF OUR LOFT STAFF SELECTS SERIES
A monthly series showcasing film favorites chosen by our
amazing Loft Cinema staff! This month’s Loft Staff Selects
film was chosen by Jeff Yanc, Program Director!
“De Palma’s satirical glam-rock-opera is the very
definition of a midnight movie: bizarre, stylish and
totally out there in that unique anything-goes ‘70s
mode that looks positively classical today.” – Edgar
Wright, director (Shaun of the Dead)
Brian De Palma’s wild and wacky musical mashup of Faust, The
Phantom of the Opera and Ziggy Stardust is a glitter-dusted horror/
comedy/rock opera that could have only escaped from the 1970s.
Before his successful run as Hollywood’s Master of Suspense with
such hits as Carrie, Dressed to Kill and Blow Out, Brian De Palma
concocted Phantom of the Paradise, a campy, surreal and sometimes
heartbreaking satirical re-imagining of the silent horror classic The
Phantom of the Opera that also doubles as a spoof of the rock music
biz of the early ‘70s. Winslow Leach (De Palma regular William
Finley) is a passionate music composer whose work is stolen by
evil record producer Swan (actor/musician Paul Williams, who also
wrote the film’s insanely catchy score), an unholy combination of
Phil Spector, Andy Warhol and the Reverend Jim Jones. Horribly
disfigured in a vinyl record-press accident while attempting to
reclaim his music, Winslow transforms himself into the steeltoothed, cape-wearing, leather-clad Phantom, out to wreak havoc
upon Swan’s new rock nightclub, The Paradise! However, his
plans for revenge are complicated when he secretly falls in love
with a naïve but ambitious young singer named Phoenix (Jessica
Harper, Suspiria), whom he vows to protect from Swan’s devilish
clutches. Filled with outrageous musical numbers (watch out for
the goofy ‘50s doo wop band, The Juicy Fruits!), literary references,
nods to classic horror flicks like Psycho, the antics of a hilarious
glitter rock star named Beef (Garrett Graham, TerrorVision), split
screens, weird sets, clever pop culture commentary and an overall
overload of excessiveness, Phantom of the Paradise is a one-of-a-kind
rock-and-roll fantasia. (Dir. by Brian De Palma, 1974, USA, 92 mins.,

A COMMUNITY RENTAL PRESENTED BY THE ARIZONA TRAIL ASSOCIATION
Micah True was a gifted athlete who ran for long distances in the trails around
his hometown of Boulder, Colorado. Inspired by his experiences of running with
the Tarahumara of Northern Mexico, Micah wanted to give them something in
return. He envisioned an ultra marathon that would take place on their own
turf, with runners from around the world traveling into the deep canyons to run
with the Tarahumara. Every one who finished would win 500 pounds of corn.
For the draught-stricken Tarahumara this would be a real incentive to run. The
international runners would get an opportunity to run with some of the best
runners in the world. Everyone would benefit. (Dir. by Sterling Noren, 2015, USA

See the new drama The Water Diviner before its
national theatrical release at this special New York
Film Critics Series preview screening, featuring
a captured-live post-film discussion with the
film’s Oscar-winning director/star Russell Crowe,
moderated by Rolling Stone film critic Peter Travers!
The New York Film Critics Series, broadcast to 50
selected major markets, takes place exclusively in
cinemas and is never available on TV or online.
Russell Crowe’s directorial debut, The Water Diviner, is an epic
adventure set four years after the devastating battle of Gallipoli
during World War I. Australian farmer Joshua Connor (Crowe)
travels to Turkey in 1919 to discover the fate of his three
sons, reported missing in action. Initially blocked by military
bureaucracy, his determination unwavering, he is helped first
by the beautiful Ayshe, who owns the hotel in which he stays
in Istanbul and then by Turkish Officer Major Hasan, who had
fought against Joshua’s sons. Holding on to hope, they must
travel across the war-torn landscape to find the truth, and
for Joshua to find his own peace. (Dir. by Russell Crowe, 2014,
Australia/Turkey/USA, in English/Turkish/Greek/Russian with
subtitles, 111 mins., Not Rated)
The New York Film Critics Series is the first-ever live national

“I discovered that if one
looks a little closer at this
beautiful world, there are
always red ants underneath.”
– David Lynch
O
ver the course of his more than 40 year career,
David Lynch has secured his place as one of the
most creative and fascinating film artists of our
time, conjuring up some of the most beautiful,
disturbing and head-scratching moments ever seen on
screen. From his early experimental shorts of the 1960s
through his most recent feature film, Inland Empire (2006),
Lynch has boldly reshaped the boundaries of cinematic
storytelling, in the process creating a highly-distinctive,
immediately-recognizable signature body of work (rare is
the director whose name alone can call forth such specific
and evocative images out of the movie ether as does Lynch’s)
that has continually enthralled, mystified and provoked
viewers. Blazing onto the movie landscape with his debut
feature film Eraserhead in 1977, Lynch firmly established
himself as one of the most original and unpredictable
directors at work in contemporary cinema, and over the
course of his career (which also incorporates painting,
photography, sculpture and music) he has artfully explored
a personal vision that embraces the thrilling mysteries of
the subconscious and the pleasure in giving oneself over
to the cinematic experience of “another world.” Beautiful,
absurd, hilarious and unsettling, the films of David Lynch
are one-of-a-kind, and The Loft Cinema is proud to present
all ten of the director’s feature films in a two-part series
guaranteed to be “wild and heart and weird on top.”
Regular admission prices for each film.
Featuring series merch from local artists Donovan White & Benjamin
Mackey. Film Guide art provided by Benjamin Mackey.
ERASERHEAD
WEDNESDAY, APRIL 1 AT 7:00PM
Often hailed as “the greatest student film ever made,” this 1977 avantgarde classic introduced David Lynch to the world of feature films, going on
to become a bona fide cult sensation and an iconic work of extraordinary,
oddball beauty. Shot in dilapidated industrial settings, seething with
rumbles and hisses, populated with disfigured and eccentric characters and
featuring that legendarily indefinable creature described as a premature
baby (luckily, Lynch still declines to discuss the exact meaning of the film),
Eraserhead propels viewers into a shocking, comical and phantasmagoric
dreamscape. (Dir. by David Lynch, 1977, USA, 89 mins., Not Rated)
THE ELEPHANT MAN
WEDNESDAY, APRIL 8 AT 7:00PM
Producer Mel Brooks (yes, that Mel Brooks) handpicked Lynch to direct this
haunting, based-on-a-true-story film after seeing Eraserhead. Inspired by
two books on John Merrick, the real-life Elephant Man, Lynch’s second film
(and his first studio project) recounts this severely deformed man’s perilous
life in Victorian-era England. Shot in gorgeous black-and-white, The Elephant
Man is a classic historical drama bearing Lynch’s distinct artistic stamp
(which includes surrealistic industrial landscapes strongly reminiscent of
Eraserhead). (Dir. by David Lynch, 1980, USA/UK, 124 mins., Rated PG)
DUNE
WEDNESDAY, APRIL 15 AT 7:00PM
Roasted by critics upon its initial release, Lynch’s infamous, psychedelic scifi tale of space, spice and sand worms is actually a dazzling visualization of
an un-filmable book – albeit a sometimes-inscrutable one. Based on Frank
Herbert’s cult novel, and produced by the legendary Dino De Laurentis,
Dune unspools the sprawling saga of young intergalactic warrior Paul
Atreides (Twin Peak’s Kyle MacLachlan) and his messianic rise to leadership
in a galactic feudal society that runs on “spice.” (Dir. by David Lynch, 1984,
USA, 137 mins., Rated PG-13)
BLUE VELVET
WEDNESDAY, APRIL 22 AT 7:00PM
Free Blue Velvet Cupcakes, while supplies last! Courtesy of Cakes for Causes.
Lynch’s highly-acclaimed breakthrough film, a coming of age story like no
other, drags naïve college student and amateur sleuth Kyle MacLachlan
down a deliciously unnerving rabbit hole of voyeurism, sadomasochism,
suburban depravity and good old-fashioned weirdness, and in the process,
changed America cinema forever. Equal parts campy comedy, scathing social
critique and demented horror film, Blue Velvet is a true original, and perhaps
the iconic director’s most enduringly influential masterpiece. (Dir. by David
Lynch, 1986, USA, 120 mins., Rated R)
WILD AT HEART
WEDNESDAY, APRIL 29 AT 7:00PM | 35MM PRINT!
Lynch’s erotically-charged version of Barry Gifford’s cult novel is
oversaturated with saccharine lust, rollicking in grotesquerie and surreally
influenced by The Wizard of Oz. The controversial winner of the Palm d’Or
prize at Cannes, Wild at Heart is a violent, perverse and wildly entertaining
road movie/romance/film noir that displays Lynch at his very “Lynch-iest,”
thanks to its bizarre humor, over-sized emotions and nightmarish parade
of grotesque supporting characters played by Harry Dean Stanton, Isabella
Rosselini, Crispin Glover and others. (Dir. by David Lynch, 1990, USA, 125
mins., Rated R)

ARIZONA LYME DISEASE ASSOCIATION
Academy Award semifinalist Under Our Skin brought
unprecedented awareness to the shocking story of Lyme
disease, an often-chronic condition many doctors claimed was
“all in your head.” Since then, the CDC has upped its estimate of
annual cases by ten times, making Lyme disease more prevalent
than HIV and breast cancer combined. This highly-anticipated
sequel investigates the deepening Lyme disease crisis and
follows its casualties and controversies. As the Lyme epidemic
explodes globally, scandalous medical collusions and conflicts
of interest incriminate the very healthcare systems meant to
protect us. Despite the obstacles that researchers, physicians
and patients continue to face, promising new findings are
emerging. And when we revisit the unforgettable characters
from Under Our Skin, we see that they have moved from horror
to hope, arriving at better health and reclaiming their lives. (Dir.

Featuring an introduction by Daniel Sullivan, Assistant
Professor in Psychology at the University of Arizona.
Daniel is the co-editor of the 2013 book, Death in Classic
and Contemporary Film: Fade to Black, which includes a
chapter on Grizzly Man.
In his mesmerizing, award-winning documentary Grizzly Man,
acclaimed director Werner Herzog explores the life and death of
amateur grizzly bear expert and wildlife preservationist Timothy
Treadwell. Treadwell lived unarmed among the bears for thirteen
summers, and filmed his adventures in the wild during his final five
seasons. In October 2003, Treadwell’s remains, along with those of
his girlfriend, Amie Huguenard, were discovered near their campsite
in Alaska’s Katmai National Park and Reserve. They had been mauled
and devoured by a grizzly, the first known victims of a bear attack
in the park. In Grizzly Man, Herzog plumbs not only the mystery of
wild nature, but also the mystery of human nature as he chronicles
Treadwell’s final years in the wilderness. In the film, Herzog himself
asks the question: “Was Timothy Treadwell a passionate and fearless
environmentalist who devoted his life to living peacefully among
Alaskan grizzly bears in order to save them? Or was he a deluded
misanthrope whose reckless actions resulted in his own death, as well
as those of his girlfriend and one of the bears he swore to protect?” A
fascinating and chilling story of one man’s relationship with nature and
his own destructive obsessions, Grizzly Man is a masterful documentary
that perfectly fits alongside Herzog’s other films chronicling men driven
to extremes such as Aguirre: The Wrath of God andFitzcarraldo. (Dir. by
Werner Herzog, 2005, USA, 103 mins., Rated R) 35mm

as masterfully as Gett.” - Christopher
Silvester, Newsweek
An Israeli woman (Ronit Elkabetz) seeking to finalize a
divorce (a “gett”) from her estranged husband finds herself
effectively put on trial by her country’s religious marriage
laws, in this powerhouse courtroom drama, Israel’s official
entry for the 2015 Best Foreign Language Film Academy
Award, from sibling directors Shlomi and Ronit Elkabetz. In
Israel, there is neither civil marriage nor civil divorce; only
Orthodox rabbis can legalize a union or its dissolution, which
is only possible with the husband’s full consent. Trapped in
a loveless marriage, Viviane Amsalem has been applying for
a divorce for three years but her religiously devout husband
Elisha (Simon Abkarian, Persepolis), continually refuses. His
cold intransigence, Viviane’s determination to fight for her
freedom, and the ambiguous role of the rabbinical judges shape
a procedure where tragedy vies with absurdity and everything is
brought out into the open for judgment. Winner of the Israeli
Film Academy Ophir Award for Best Picture and propelled by the
craft of Ronit Elkabetz (The Band’s Visit), one of Israeli cinema’s
most acclaimed actresses, Gett: The Trial of Viviane Amsalem is an
uncompromising, heart-rending portrait of a woman’s struggle
to overcome an unmoving patriarchy and live a life of her own

You know the story: a group of sexy teens head to a secluded lakeside cabin for a
weekend of debauched fun, but while the temperatures rise both on and off the
beach, a mysterious, menacing force is lurking just around the corner, waiting
for the opportunity to start picking them off one by one. But this isn’t just any
“horror movie cabin in the woods” situation, because here the tingling terror
turns out to be courtesy of a rampaging, ravenous, rabid pack of toxic-wastemutated Zombeavers (that’s Zombie Beavers, for the laymen), that are bringing
with them enough scares, splatter and beaver innuendo to make Sharknado
look like a gentle spring rain. This outrageously fun B-movie creature feature

Rooney, Hollywood Reporter
“Delicious, horrible, scary and scabrous…
Szifrón brings off a very difficult trick: making
something genuinely funny and genuinely scary
at the same time.”— Peter Bradshaw, Guardian
Revenge is a dish best served wild. As its title suggests,
Damian Szifron’s latest feature, Wild Tales, is a compendium
of outrageously bizarre stories, each more shocking and
hilarious than the last. Blending subversive black comedy
with dramatically loaded scenarios, Szifron skillfully weaves
together six separate shorts, unlinked by narrative but unified
by a violence that simmers on the cusp of explosion. From a
hilariously over-the-top exploration of crazed road rage to a
mild-mannered everyman (played by Ricardo Darin, The Secret
in their Eyes) pushed to the limit by tow trucks and traffic
tickets to a mayhem-filled wedding reception in which the
new bride’s shocking discovery leaves many guests requiring
hospitalization, Wild Tales is more than a series of short films
about frustrated characters on the verge – it’s also a wickedly
funny portrait of contemporary Argentina: a society riddled
with corruption, hampered by bureaucracy, and bogged
down by tradition. Produced by legendary filmmaker Pedro
Almodovar, Wild Tales smashes social taboos and provides a
cathartic release from the pressures of modern-day living — a
release that provokes unrestrained, double-over-in-your-seat
laughter. (Dir. by Damian Szifron, 2014, Argentina, in Spanish with

In this darkly comedic odyssey, Academy Award-nominee
Rinko Kikuchi (Babel, Pacific Rim) stars as Kumiko, a frustrated
Office Lady whose imagination transcends the confines of her
mundane life. Kumiko becomes obsessed with a mysterious,
battered VHS tape of The Coen Brothers’ 1996 thriller Fargo,
which she’s mistaken for a documentary, fixating on a scene
where a suitcase of stolen cash is buried in the desolate, frozen
landscape of North Dakota. Believing this treasure to be real,
she leaves behind Tokyo and her beloved rabbit Bunzo to
recover it – and finds herself on a dangerous adventure unlike
anything she’s seen in the movies. With Kumiko, The Treasure
Hunter, indie mavericks the Zellner Brothers (Goliath, KidThing) spin a strangely touching underdog fable (loosely inspired
by true events), populated by eccentrics and elevated to sonic
heights by a Sundance award-winning score from electro-indie

and delayed action over cigarettes and toxic chemicals. Now
their main battleground is denying the man-made causes of
global climate change. Inspired by the acclaimed book by Naomi
Oreskes and Erik Conway, Merchants of Doubt takes viewers on a
satirically comedic, yet chillingly illuminating ride into the heart
of conjuring American spin. Director Kenner lifts the curtain on
a secretive group of highly charismatic, silver-tongued punditsfor-hire who present themselves in the media as scientific
authorities – yet have the contrary aim of spreading maximum
confusion about well-studied public threats. He traces the birth
of the doubt industry to the 1950s, when tobacco companies
began fighting the perception that cigarettes are harmful. Those
efforts succeeded for decades, and have now been replicated as a
dangerous model for climate-change denial. (Dir. by Robert Kenner,
2014, USA, 96 mins., Rated PG-13)

“Beneath the onslaught of contemporary injokes, Baumbach manages to articulate, with a
great deal of poignancy, the timeless challenge
of aging.” – Violet Lucca, Slant Magazine
Noah Baumbach’s witty exploration of aging, ambition and
success stars Ben Stiller and Naomi Watts as a middle-aged
couple whose career and marriage are overturned when a
disarming young couple enters their lives. Josh (Stiller) and
Cornelia (Watts) are a childless New York married couple in their
mid-forties. As their other friends all start having children, the
couple gravitates toward a young hipster couple named Jamie
(Adam Driver) and Darby (Amanda Seyfried). He’s an aspiring
documentary filmmaker, a vocation Josh already has. Soon
the older couple begins enjoying the energy they feel hanging
out with the younger generation, and it’s not long before the
unhappy forty-somethings throw aside friends their own age
— including Beastie Boy Adam Horovitz in a sly supporting role
— to trail after these young hipsters who seem so plugged in,
so uninhibited, so Brooklyn cool. “Before we met,” Josh admits,
“the only two feelings I had left were wistful and disdainful.” This
new friendship and artistic collaboration makes Josh feel as if a
door has opened back to his youth, but eventually he begins to
suspect his new best friend might not be as straightforward and
trustworthy as he thought. This sparkling new dramatic comedy
from acclaimed writer/director Noah Baumbach (Frances Ha,
The Squid and the Whale) is a funny and open-hearted portrait of
urban sophisticates and the pitfalls of straddling the generation
gap. (Dir. by Noah Baumbach, 2014, USA, 94 mins., Rated R)

This imaginative and strikingly visceral tale of an abandoned
mutt’s descent from man’s best friend to rebellious threat
earned plaudits at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival, including
the Un Certain Regard prize and the Palm Dog for the best
four-legged performance. White God is also a cautionary tale
about a “superior” species and its disgraced inferior that serves
as a brutal metaphor for the political and cultural tensions
sweeping contemporary Hungary. When a new regulation
that favors pedigreed dogs and places a severe tax on mixed
breeds comes into force, many owners dump their animals.
Thirteen-year-old Lili fights desperately to protect her pet
Hagen, but her father eventually abandons the dog on the
street. Struggling to survive, homeless Hagen realizes that not
everyone is a dog’s best friend. He joins a gang of strays but is
soon captured and sent to the over-crowded pound. Eventually,
the dogs seize an opportunity to escape and revolt against
mankind. Their revenge appears merciless, and Lili may be the
only one who can halt this unexpected war between man and
dog. With White God, acclaimed Hungarian director Kornél
Mundruczó has unleashed a gripping, unconventional narrative
with deep emotional nuance, harrowing suspense and sweeping
directorial vision. (Dir. by Kornél Mundruczó, 2014, Hungary, in
Hungarian with subtitles, 121 mins., Rated R)
Based on a terrifying true story, the gripping
thriller Backcountry follows an urban couple who go on a
romantic camping in the Canadian wilderness, only to find that
the unimaginable beauty of nature sits alongside their most
primal fears. Alex (Jeff Roop) is a seasoned outdoorsman while
Jenn (Missy Peregrym), a corporate lawyer, is not. After much
convincing, and against her better judgment, she agrees to let
him take her deep into a Provincial Park to one of his favorite
spots – the secluded Blackfoot Trail. On their first night, deep
in the forest, they have an unsettling encounter with Brad (Eric
Balfour), a strange alpha male with eyes for Jenn who may
or may not be following them. Alex’s desire to quickly reach
Blackfoot Trail only intensifies. They push further and further
into the woods, Alex stubbornly insisting that he remembers the
way. After three days their path disappears; they are hopelessly
lost. Without food or water, they struggle to find their way
back, the harsh conditions bringing out the best and worst in
them, pushing their already fragile relationship to the breaking
point. But when they realize they have accidentally entered
the territory of a huge, man-eating bear, being lost suddenly
becomes the least of their problems, and a horrific battle for
survival ensues. (Dir. by Adam MacDonald, 2014, Canada, 92

“A masterpiece… incendiary, shocking, and
infuriating.” – Brian Tallerico, RogerEbert.com
A touching and tense drama about destiny, connections, and
passion, 3 Hearts presents a headily romantic look at a classic
love triangle. One night in provincial France, Marc (Benoît
Poelvoorde) meets Sylvie (Charlotte Gainsbourg) after missing
his train back to Paris. Instantly and intensely drawn to one
another, they wander through the streets until morning in rare,
almost choreographed, harmony. A thwarted plan for a second
meeting sends each in a separate direction - Sylvie reunites with
her ex and leaves France; Marc falls in love and marries. What
neither knows is that Marc’s new bride is Sylvie’s sister, Sophie
(Chiara Mastroianni). Upon Sylvie’s return to France, the spark
between her and Marc is reignited in ways that will forever
alter the relationships between sister to sister and husband to
wife. Co-starring screen legend Catherine Deneuve and directed
by acclaimed filmmaker Benoit Jacquot (Farewell, My Queen), 3
Hearts is a cleverly constructed romantic drama with a delicious
French twist. (Dir. by Benoit Jacquot, 2014, France, in French with
subtitles, 106 mins., Rated PG-13)
The statistics are staggering. One in five women in college
are sexually assaulted, yet only a fraction of these crimes
are reported, and even fewer result in punishment for the
perpetrators. From acclaimed writer/director Kirby Dick and
producer Amy Ziering, the filmmaking team behind the Oscarnominated documentary The Invisible War, comes The Hunting
Ground, a piercing, monumental exposé of rape culture on
campuses, poised to light a fire under a national debate. In a
tour de force of verité footage, expert insights, and first-person
testimonies, the film follows undergraduate rape survivors
pursuing both their education and justice, despite ongoing
harassment and the devastating toll on them and their families.
Scrutinizing the gamut of elite Ivies, state universities, and
small colleges, filmmakers Dick and Ziering reveal an endemic
system of institutional cover-ups, rationalizations, victimblaming, and denial that creates perfect storm conditions for
predators to prey with impunity. Meanwhile, the film captures
mavericks Andrea Pino and Annie Clark, two survivors who are
taking matters into their own hands —ingeniously employing
Title IX legal strategy to fight back and sharing their knowledge
among a growing, unstoppable network of young women who
will no longer be silent. (Dir. by Kirby Dick, 2015, USA, 103 mins.,
Rated PG-13)

An Honest Liar is a fascinating and revelatory documentary
about the world-famous magician, escape artist, and worldrenowned enemy of deception, James ‘The Amazing’ Randi. The
film brings to life Randi’s intricate investigations that publicly
exposed psychics, faith healers, and con-artists with quasireligious fervor. A master deceiver who came out of the closet
as a gay man at the age of 81, Randi created fictional characters,
fake psychics, and even turned his partner of 25 years, the
artist Jose Alvarez, into a sham guru named Carlos. But when a
shocking revelation in Randi’s personal life is discovered, it isn’t
clear whether Randi is still the deceiver - or the deceived. (Dir.
by Justin Weinstein & Tyler Measom, 2014, USA, 90 mins., Not

Juliette Binoche, Kristen Stewart, and Chloë Grace Moretz light
up this scintillating showbiz drama from acclaimed director
Olivier Assayas (Carlos). Maria Enders (Binoche) is an actress
at the peak of her international career who is asked to perform
in a revival of the play that made her famous twenty years
earlier. Back then she played the role of Sigrid, an alluring young
woman who disarms and eventually drives her boss Helena to
suicide. Now she is being asked to step into the other role, that
of the older Helena. She departs with her assistant (Kristen
Stewart) to rehearse in Sils Maria, a remote region of the Alps.
A young, up-and-coming Hollywood starlet with a penchant
for scandal (Chloë Grace Moretz) is slated to take on the role
of Sigrid, and Maria soon finds herself overcome with personal
insecurities and professional jealousies as she comes face to face
with an ambiguously charming woman who is, in essence, an
unsettling reflection of herself. A bewitching tale of backstage
rivalry and shifting personas, Clouds of Sils Maria is propelled
by tour-de-force performances from three actresses at the top
of their game. (Dir. by Olivier Assayas, 2014, France/Germany/

“No animals were harmed in the making of this movie. 70
members of the cast and crew were.” So goes the tagline for
this infamous, rarely-seen, WTF? ‘80s cult classic starring
Tippi Hedren (The Birds), her real-life daughter Melanie
Griffith (Working Girl) and over 150 lions, tigers and numerous
other dangerous, untamed animals. Was the idea of mixing
actors with wild jungle beasts for the sake of a movie a surefire recipe for disaster? You bet! An unprecedented (and
wholly unpredictable) action-adventure, Roar follows wildlife
preservationist Hank (The Exorcist producer Noel Marshall in
his sole and career-derailing turn as an actor and director), who
lives harmoniously alongside a menagerie of untamed animals,
including cheetahs, elephants, lions and tigers on a preservation
in the African plains. When his wife and children arrive (reallife wife Tippi Hedren, who had already experienced the joys
of working with animals for Alfred Hitchcock; teenage stepdaughter Melanie Griffith; and sons John and Jerry Marshall),
for a visit, a long-brewing battle for dominance between two
lions erupts and threatens their very lives. Soon, the terrified
family is besieged by a battalion of wild beasts, and if the look
of panic in the eyes of the actors as an army of lethal predators
close in around them seems unusually real, that’s because it was!
Actual life-threatening maulings were the order of the day on
the set of Roar, and the list of injuries to cast and crew is long
and unbelievable (with some incidents, including the mauling
of an obviously terrified Melanie Griffith, actually caught on
camera and used in the film!). Actually released in 1981 as a PGrated family-friendly adventure film (what????), Roar is the kind
of deliriously gonzo moviemaking that will never be seen again.

Fitting for a film that is ultimately
about free will and individuality,
A Clockwork Orange, based on the

Stanley Kubrick’s most idiosyncratic
work - an exceedingly artful, yet

It’s Charlton Heston vs. the Damn
