HOYO DE MONTERREY
DAVIDOFF
Hoyo de Monterrey owes its origin to the town of San Juan Martinez, which lies at
the heart of the Vuelta Abajo region, Pinar del Rio. Here the Hoyo de Monterrey
plantation, one of the great Vegas Finas de Primera, can be reached through a gate
on the town’s main square inscribed “Hoyo de Monterrey, Jose Gener 1860”. Jose
Gener, a Catalan, first used the name of his “vega” on a brand of Habanos in 1865.
The flavour of the blend found in Hoyo makes it an attractive choice for those who
seek a delicate yet aromatic Habano that is lighter to the taste, a great choice after
lunch for the connoisseur and less regular smoker alike.
At the age of 21, Winston Churchill visited the Caribbean to observe the Cuban
Revolutionary War against Spain. This is when he first decided to give up the
cigarette in favour of the cigar. Inspired by Winston Churchill’s philosophy of life, Mr.
Davidoff hit on the idea of creating an exceptional cigar. The Winston Churchill
series is highly complex in terms of taste and aroma, the blends are unlike anything
previously available from the Dominican Republic. The result is a spicy, highly
aromatic cigar with rich hints of pepper nuts and roasted coffee which will give
inspiration to lovers of full-bodied cigars. Only the very best, richly aromatic
tobaccos and an exclusive wrapper leaf are used to m ake these cigars – they are,
after all, named after perhaps the most famous cigar smoker of all times – Sir
Winston Churchill.

fruit notes.
RAMON ALLONES
Ramon Allones is one of the big names in the history of Havanas. Founded in 1837,
it is also one of the oldest brands still in production. A Galician by birth , Ramon
Allones, was the first cigar manufacturer to pack his cigars in boxes decorated with
labels and stamped with his brand’s emblem. He was the pioneer of the packaging
tradition that we know today. All the cigars are filled with a blend of filler and
binder tobaccos from Vuelta Abajo zone, characterised by their intense and complex

SAN CRISTOBAL DE LA HABANA
H. UPMANN
San Cristobal de la Habana was the original name of Havana, Cuba’s capital city,
when it was founded in 1519; San Cristobal (St Christopher) in honour of Columbus
and La Habana after Indian name for the site.
H. Upmann was a banker from Germany who so loved Cuban cigars that he moved
to Havana in 1844 and set up as both banker and cigar maker. His bank closed in
the early 1920s but his cigars live on as a fine example of an elegant light to
medium flavoured Habano. Gold medals in no less than eleven international
exhibitions during the 19th century adorn the boxes – as does Herr Upmann’s
personal signature. The brand today comprises a wide range of sizes which are a
firm favourite amongst cigar enthusiasts around the world.
All San Cristobal’s vitolas are ‘Tripa larga, totalmente a mano’ – long filler, totally
hand made to a light to medium flavoured blend of filler and binder leaves from
Vuelta Abajo tobacco zone.

LAGAVULIN 16 YRS ISLAY MALT WHISKY
£14
Probably the most pungent of all Islay malts, Lagavulin is not for the faint -hearted
but inspires fanatical devotion in its many followers. The nose gives aromas of
Lapsang Souchong and fruity sherry. The palate delivers dryness at first offset by the
sweetness of the sherry character. As it develops, oily, grassy and, in particular, salt
emerges in a long, sustained, aggressive attack and finished with a huge, powerful,
bear-hug of peat.

ROMEO Y JULIETA
PARTAGAS
Romeo y Julieta is named after William Shakespeare’s tragic lovers and the origins of
Romeo y Julieta as a Habano date back to 1875. The brand rose to international
fame during the early years of the 20th century under the direction of Don “Pepin”
Fernandez, a talented promoter, who was amongst the first to recognise the power
of the cigar band. During his heyday no less than 20,000 different bands were used
in production. Winston Churchill famously became a devotee of Romeo y Julieta
after his visit to Havana in 1946. Since then his name has been commemorated on a
band and used to describe the marque’s most famous size measuring 7 inches x 47
– the Churchill. Romeo y Julieta’s balanced and aromatic blend of selected leaves
from the Vuelta Abajo region makes it the classic medium bodied Habano.
If there is one particularly famous cigar factory in Havana, it is Partagas, which lies in
the heart of Havana city. The factory was opened in 1845 by Don Jaime Partagas
and it has been making the cigars that bear his name ever since. Now the oldest
cigar factory in the world, a Partagas is immediately recognisable by its deep earthy
flavour. Sadly Don Jaime would not live to see the success as he was shot dead in
his own plantation in 1868. History has failed to record who pulled the trigger,
some say it was down to an affair of the heart, other suggest a rival cigar
manufacturer was to blame, however his cigars live on!

Full flavoured due to the inclusion of the scarce and difficult to cultivate Medio
Tiempo leaves. The ‘Behike’ was the shaman charged with the lighting of the first
Cohibas recorded when Columbus landed in 1492. The most sought after H avanas

which lies on Cuba’s south coast and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Trinidad

1969 at El Laguito, the Cohiba factory, but only very small quantities were made
exclusively for the Cuban Council of State, which gave them as gifts to foreign
diplomats and visiting dignitaries. Medium flavoured and a modern classic.

COHIBA
MONTECRISTO
Cohiba is the flagship brand of Habanos and is named after an ancient Taino Indian
word for the bunches of tobacco leaves that Columbus first saw being smoked by
the original inhabitants of Cuba - the earliest known form of the cigar. Today it is
one of the bestselling brands in the world and considered by many to be the most
prestigious hand-made cigars money can buy, the reason for which may be partly
explained by looking back at the brand’s illustrious origins. It was created in 1966 for
President Fidel Castro himself and was made at the then top secret but now world
famous El Laguito factory. At first, it was only seen outside Cuba as gifts for heads of
state and visiting diplomats. The leaves then, as they still are today, were the
“selection of the selection” from the five finest tobacco plantations in the Vuelta
Abajo region in Cuba. The finest leaves deserve the finest treatment and so the best
torcedors (cigar rollers) Cuba had to offer were recruited to work their magic and
produce the exquisite Cohiba range. La Linea 1492 range, launched in 1992, offer a
medium flavour and are the lightest cigars within the brand.
Montecristo is the best known and probably the most loved brand of Habanos
throughout the world. It forms the benchmark for many Habanos smokers against
which other brands are judged. The name comes from the hero of Alexandre
Dumas’ famous novel “The Count of Montecristo”, which was a firm favourite when
read to the cigar rollers at the factory where it was founded in 1935. Montecristo’s
perfectly balanced blend of filler is created exclusively with selected leaves from the
Vuelta Abajo region. Its distinctive medium to full flavour and distinguished aroma
are unmistakeable.
