Tomato Planting Tips from Mark and Sue:

Plant as much of the tomato stem as you can. We dig a trench and lay the plant sideways with the top angling up slightly
and the roots and most of the stem about 2” under the soil. Don’t try to bend the top up, it will reach for the sun and be
straight up the next day. (New roots will form along the buried stem, helping your plant grow faster).
Don’t over-fertilize. Too much nitrogen makes for a beautiful lush plant but no tomatoes. Add compost and a slow
release organic fertilizer when planting, then fertilize again when the fruit starts to set.
Get a jump on the season by covering your plants with fabric (also known as Reemay or Agribon). We put hoops over
the tomatoes when planting, cover with the fabric and leave it on for a month. The plants stay warmer and bugs can’t get
to them. Remove the fabric if it gets unusually warm or to water and weed.
Control insects. Flea beetles are tiny jumping beetles that bite “shotgun holes” in the leaves. The floating row cover
will protect the plants from these. Tomato hornworms are large green caterpillars with a horn at one end. We love the
moths (Sphinx/Hummingbird moth) these caterpillars come from, so we grow sacrificial tomato plants and move the
hornworms from the production plants to these. But in years where the hornworms are prolific, I eventually resort to
spraying them with Bt, an organic control that only affects caterpillars that eat the plants that have been sprayed. There
are different strains of Bt, make sure and get the one for caterpillars and not for mosquito larvae.
