This is the last full-colour issue of “The Obsession”
before next year’s Melrose event. We can only afford
colour issues due to the extra income from the sponsors of the Land Rover Show. So show your gratitude
next time you need something that our sponsors provide and favour them with your patronage.
Jordan Leverington has continued documenting his
Series 2A rebuild in this issue. Re-building a Land
Rover from the ground up is a time-consuming process and I admire his persistence.
The results from the Gawler Sand-Pit Trial have been
calculated, so if you were there, turn to page 11. You
may be surprised at the outcome.
The third and final chapter in the Central Australia
Adventure (reprinted with the permission of LROI)
can be found in this issue. There’s another similar
adventure departing in July if you feel like escaping
the southern winter.
If you are on Historic Registration, don’t miss Ian
Turner’s message on page 31 after the minutes.
But wait– there’s more! Too much to mention it all
here, in fact. I hope you enjoy the read.
Cheers

Vice-President’s Review
Hi All,
Over the last month the Melrose subcommittee has had a meeting regarding the wash
up from the Melrose event.
Although as yet it has not been fully reconciled we are pleased to report that we will
have a modest overall profit. This will improve the starting balance for the next event
and gives us more scope to look for improvements and or additions to the event.
Over the last 3 committee meetings the committee has been busy in reviewing and updating the clubs constitution and club rules in order to bring them up to date with what is actually happening within the club environment and to make sure it complies with the State Governments Incorporations Act.
The next step in this process is that all the changes will be publicised in the magazine for the memberships’
benefit. Following that there will then be a special General Meeting called to vote on this package.
Over the next couple of months the committee meetings will be of a more general art as a fair number of
committee members will be on the road and/or abroad.

Secretary’s Review
Hi all,
I hope that this edition of the magazine finds everybody fit and healthy now that the weather has
turned and the cold and wet seems to have set in and the season where people are starting to
think about travelling north to find a warmer climate.
We again have a presentation from Andrew Chan from Electric Bug preceding this meeting and for those of you who
attended his last presentation you will know how entertaining Anthony was, so it would be great to see as many members as possible at this meeting to support the people who support the Club.
If any members are still interested in coming along on the Dolphin Explorer Cruise there is still time to register, it
would be great to see as many members come along on this day as there is a great deal of effort put in with the organisation of these trips and your support is appreciated.
Speaking of trips, if any members have an idea for a trip please put any suggestions down on the suggestion sheet
that is available with the trip sheets at every meeting.
See you all at the May meeting.

Check out the third and final instalment of the LRO story in this issue! It
is being reprinted with the kind permission of the Land Rover Owner International Magazine and our good friends Pat and John who accompanied us along with several other Club members.
Sunday October 18
We will be organising a Sunday Drive from Port Adelaide to the Birdwood
Museum to celebrate the Museum’s 50th birthday year. There will be a
charge per vehicle to participate which will include entry to the grounds at
Birdwood plus a barbeque lunch.
This will be a chance to celebrate the 50th birthday of this great collection.
With the approval of Club Members, we would like to designate this trip
as an open event which means that anyone who owns a Land Rover can
take part, provided they pay the appropriate fee.
This will be a chance for our Club to promote itself with other Land Rover
Owners and hopefully persuade them to join.
Over the coming months I will provide more information to you as we continue to negotiate with the Museum. If you have any questions please
ask either myself or Dave Price.
Trip leaders are needed to run Sunday drives or long weekend trips.
If you have a passion to get out and about in your Land Rover, come and
talk to the Committee!
Trip sheets will be available at every Club meeting, but for those of you
who cannot attend, you can register for all trips on the Club website
lrregsa.org.au
Alternatively you can ring Dave Price direct. His mobile number is
in the “Obsession”.

“It seemed like a good idea at the time...”
Jordan Leverington continues the rebuild of his Series IIA
Series 2a full rebuild, Part 8: Grinding through the rust with
re-kindled enthusiasm.
It has been some time since my last progress report and to be honest the momentum of the restoration did
falter for a while due to more pressing concerns. However, I have had some significant wins over the last
couple of months and my enthusiasm has been reinvigorated by the recent Melrose Easter show. I must
thank Coop and Ian for generously allowing me to drive their beautiful vehicles which demonstrated exactly
what I'm missing out on!
I recently acquired a tub, which has been missing piece of my restoration thus far. My vehicle was originally a completely knocked down (CKD) import from the UK in the form of a "basic" model. This model only
had the truck cab and left it open to the purchaser to how they wanted to treat the rear section. The original
owner, like most farmers, bought this model and put a steel tray on the back. This tray was much more agricultural and suited their needs far better than the tub ever could. As I am not a farmer nor have any intention of being one, I wanted something a bit better looking whilst maintaining the overall originality of the vehicle. I have been on the hunt for a tub for the past 3 years and was lucky enough to find a gentleman in
Sedan (in the Riverland) that was willing to sell me one. The donor
vehicle was a series 3 diesel which he purchased purely for the motor and gearbox. We spent the better part of 5 hours in 43° persuading the wagon top and tub and then tub and chassis to part ways. I
also managed to pick up an auxiliary fuel tank, fuel filler, badge and
two way fuel tap for a very reasonable price. If anyone is interested
in any panels or wagon roofs let me know and I can pass on his details.
Just like my original fuel tank, my new tank had seen better days
and was considerably gunked up with mud and rust. As with my
other tank I decided to use a KBS fuel tanks restoration kit to sort it
out prior to installation. The kit comes with a heavy duty degreaser,
rust blaster and sealant and all for just over $100. I found that putting a length of chain in the tank really helps break up the crud and
scrape extra corrosion off the inside of the tank. The whole process
could be done in a day, however it is recommended to do it over a
weekend to ensure the best results. With this extra fuel load I
should be able to make it from Adelaide to Holden Hill without filling
up once!
Now that I had installed the motor and gearbox back into
the chassis, I had plenty of room to bring the truck cab
undercover to be dismantled. I removed all the ancillary
components such as the pedal boxes and ignition coils
and windscreen wiper assembly and was happy to see
that the bulkhead only suffered from a bit of surface rust
which appear to be caused by the overzealous filling of
the brake master cylinder which removed the paint. I
took this opportunity to strip, grind, sandblast and paint
each part before storing away for the eventual rebuild of
the firewall.
As I had never driven the vehicle, the steering box was a
Land Rover Register of SA Inc
Page 9
complete unknown as to its condition. Like everything
else I decided that it was a better option to sort it out
now whilst it was all apart rather than wait and see until it was all back together. I had already bought a
steering box rebuild kit (mistakenly thought it was for
the steering relay) that came with everything needed
for the overhaul. As soon as I drained the oil I knew I
had done the right thing because of the dark green
sludge that came out. Dismantling and reassembly is
a very simple process which is explained clearly in the
manual, my only advice is to have someone with good
eyes and patience on standby for when you drop the
15 million ball bearings all over the floor. If you are
anything like me, then the assistant also needs to be
immune to bad language and not be willing to impart
helpful advice in hindsight like "Why didn't you do that
over the bench?". Grrrr, I know that now, moving on.
The window wiper assembly was not in good shape
and when I hooked it up to a battery the motor
strained and struggled to just move the worm drive.
Upon closer inspection it was clear that the old grease
had mixed well with 30 years of red dust to create
what can only be described as a putty. This was an
easy fix and just really required a clean and re-grease
in order for it to work like a charm (although I am not
looking forward to actually having to use these during
anything more than a light sprinkle).
LUNCH AT THE SANDPIT: LRRSA members gather around the marquee and newly-restored club
BBQ trailer for a sausage sizzle lunch before attempting the second half of the Club Trial.

Club Trial at Reeves Plains
Our first Club Trial for some years was held at the C&M Sandpit at Reeves Plains on Sunday 3rd May.
Eighteen Club vehicles arrived at the site by 10.00am. The weather turned on its very best behaviour with
a nice breeze and warm sunshine. A marquee was erected at the highest point of the site to allow the
spectators a grandstand view over the course set out the previous day by a group of willing volunteers.
Two separate courses, one of 10 gates and the second of 7 gates, had been laid out, both courses having
to be completed in both clockwise and anticlockwise directions.
Action began at 10.30am with Ian Turner in his Series 1 showing how capable the early vehicles were. He
was followed by more Series vehicles before the newer vehicles took their turn.
A stop for lunch at 12 noon and a chance for everyone to enjoy the superb sunshine whilst enjoying a sausage sizzle. Competition recommenced at 1.00 with repositioned gates and a chance to cover the course
in an anticlockwise direction– the repositioned gates having made the challenge course much more difficult to attain a clear round.
Everyone enjoyed the day’s action- see the results of our fun day below. A suggestion has been put forward that the Club could reintroduce Trials on a 3 monthly basis. If you are interested in attending an event
in September please add your name to the trip sheet. It’s a chance to attend and find out what your Land
Rover is capable of.

Junior Jamboree
At the recent Melrose Land Rover Show, the littlest potential 4WD owners, drivers, and competitors were
not forgotten. Many were spotted entering the large pavilion marquee and later emerging with smiles on
their faces, a gleam in their eyes, and various accoutrements which they had not been carrying on entry.
One of your editor's assistants, intrigued by this apparent transformation, took a peek through the door to
see just what was going on. She was amazed to discover a hive of industry with various projects being pursued with great enthusiasm. Some of the participants wished to remain anonymous, as can be seen by
their identity-concealing eyewear. The intense concentration required meant that some barely noticed the
presence of our reporter, while others were happy to display their handiwork.

THE POWER OF REDARC
On April 24th, 46 members motored down the southern expressway (now with improved two-way flow) to
the premises of Redarc Australia, to hear about the latest developments in automotive electronic accessories, especially those related to camping and 4 wheel driving.
Our hosts, Matthew Wright and Craig Herriot plied us with food and drinks before breaking us into smaller
groups for a tour of the factory. It was a fascinating experience to see just how these complex and capable
electronic devices are manufactured. Of particular note was the constant attention to detail and the frequent testing that occurs at all stages of the process. Staff are not permitted to smoke on the factory floor,
must adhere to regulations regarding cleanliness, and most important of all, have to maintain a “grounded”
electrical state at all times to avoid damage to sensitive computer components while they are in the process of being assembled. Matt even commented that their first issue of company T-shirts had to be discarded because they were made of the wrong type of material which tended to generate an electrostatic
charge! All of our questions were answered in detail, and the materials on display illustrated the construction methods that make these devices extremely reliable.
The tour was followed by interesting and informative talks on the various devices that were displayed
around the room. During the break, we had time to explore the displays and talk to some of the engineers
responsible for the development of the equipment. We really are in a privileged position in SA– not only
does a local company manufacture some of the best electrical and electronic equipment available, but they
are always there to back up their products and provide expert technical advice.
THE REDARC FACTORY FLOOR: Matthew Wright holds one of Redarc’s products illustrating the
rubbery “potting” material which dampens vibration and excludes moisture– just two of the reasons why these devices keep operating in the harsh environments encountered in off-road travelling. Matt said putting this stuff into your mate’s coffee mug is not recommended!
RAFFLE RESULTS
At last month’s meeting, Geoff Saxby won 2nd prize in the club’s social raffle.
We didn’t bother taking a photo of the first prize winner as we all know who
she is from her frequent appearances in this space. Suffice to say, the investigation into the rorting of the club’s raffling system is ongoing....

THE STRESS OF COMPETITION
“Which sheep station is riding on the outcome of this competition?”
When the going gets tough, the tough...er.. start concentrating. These competitors in the recent Melrose
trials certainly showed the depth of their concentration in their faces as they struggled to avoid the traps set
for them by the course designers. Was it stressful? Well you only have to look at the white knuckles visible
in some of these shots to know the answer to that question. And of course, it wasn’t just the drivers....

Photographs & Images
Please submit separately to the written article and send an edited
selection relevant to your article. It is very time-consuming reviewing large numbers of photos trying to work out which ones go with
the article. If you are emailing them to me please reduce the size
of the file, and send me a separate email to let me know you have
sent them, as there have been occasions where people have sent
me photos and I’ve never received them.
