Simplifying MAT Medication-Assisted Treatment in Arizona MAT Perceptions about Medication-Assisted Treatment Addiction need not be a life sentence. Individuals in need of treatment for substance use disorders often experience resistance to the idea of using medication as part of their treatment and recovery plan. Some individuals confuse the use of prescribed medication as another form of substance abuse, simply replacing the drugs or alcohol. The use of medication to treat substance use disorders, is just like using medication to treat other chronic health conditions like asthma, diabetes, or hypertension – it must occur under the supervision of a prescribing physician and involve FDA regulated prescription medications. Others are resistant to using medication as part of their treatment and recovery plan because they mistakenly believe that such use violates the tenets of 12-Step groups, like Alcoholics Anonymous or Narcotics Anonymous. In fact, the program literature of these organizations endorse the importance of maintaining good physical health and complying with all physician orders, including the use of prescribed medication. MAT drugs work by blocking the desirable effects that the substance has upon our nervous system, reducing the craving sensations that individuals often experience early in their recovery, or by creating a physically uncomfortable sensation when an individual uses alcohol. All medications used in treating individuals with substance use disorders have been rigorously evaluated and found to be effective when used properly, under the supervision of a prescribing physician, and provided in conjunction with counseling and other supportive services.
