T LC eam June 28, 2013 Vol. 15, No. 12 inked ommunication 2012 Ride to Survive keeps getting bigger and better! Ste. Genevieve County Memorial Hospital held its 3rd annual Ride to Survive to benefit the hospital’s Alan P. Lyss Center for Cancer Care and Clinical Research. Over 150 bicyclists, runners and walkers chose their respective 30-mile, 15-mile, 8-mile or 5k routes. Dr. Alan Lyss, who has ridden in the event the past two years, was sidelined this year due to a recent bicycle mishap, but he did give a brief address. “Since Ste. Genevieve County Memorial Hospital opened its first cancer center over 20 years ago, there are 18 percent more survivors of cancer then there was June then,” he said. “That translates National Aphasia Awareness Month into 12 million National Hernia Awareness Month cancer survivors Men’s Health Month compared to 3 National Migraine Awareness Month million survivors Scleroderma Awareness Month in the 1970’s. You know those June 20th Employee Forum can numbers very be viewed on the Grapevine! well because as you look around CALENDAR you see so many beneficiaries of the improvements in cancer research and treatment among your friends and neighbors. It’s wonderful to be associated with those improvements in cancer outcomes. “One figure you may not be aware of, but that I’m very proud of, is that sometime in late 2013 or early 2014, the 100th resident of Ste. Genevieve will participate in a cancer research study here. That means 100 Nurse Practitioners Holly Huelskamp people have gotten and Mary Crecelius access to the newest and best treatments without having to travel long distances to referral centers. Congratulations to you, congratulations to these 90+ participants, and congratulations to visionaries like Tom Keim, Rod Scherer, your hospital board president, and to our head oncology nurse Sandy Schilli and her staff for everything they’ve done to bring state-of-the-art cancer care close to home.” (photos on page 4) Ask Tom Our housekeeping department has been busy lately replacing the old sanitizer dispensers. These new and improved models with a longer battery life are now throughout the Bloomsdale Medical Centre. During the next month, housekeeping plans to have all of SGCMH off-site and hospital in the new dispensing systems. They will complete offsite prior to starting the hospital in hopes of not having a lot of product waste. Great stewards of our resources--Kudos! During this transition time, if you should need a “refill” please call the Housekeeping Dept. at 731 and request a refill. They have plenty of partially filled bottles of soap and sanitizer bottles that have been removed from dispensers that have been changed out. If you find any old “spare” bottles, please turn them in to housekeeping. If you have any questions, please call Melinda @ #402. DEPARTMENT SPOTLIGHT the next TRASH BASH is Thursday, July 11 4:00 pm Quality Improvement SEMO AAA to partner with SGCMH Ste. Genevieve County Memorial Hospital (SGCMH) is now partnering with Southeast Missouri Area Agency on Aging (SEMO AAA) to bring its Caring Transitions program to Ste. Genevieve. This program helps encourage and provides patients with tools to actively participate in their care and help prevent readmission to the hospital. Liz Yokley, outreach benefits counselor, for SEMO AAA, says the program tries to fill in the gaps to help people in the community remain home. “A person, age 60 or over, returning home from a hospital stay can experience unexpected challenges,” she said. “ They might find themselves back home struggling to manage their medication, make follow-up doctor’s appointments, and getting some in-home support. This could then result in a person needing to return to the hospital. Through this partnership we will work together to help address access to community resources and social concerns that can prevent these readmissions.” Yokley said a lot of what she does through Caring Transitions is find resources for patients. “Everyone is different, of course, but the main areas of concern that we look at are transportation, medication, making sure the patient is getting proper nutrition, and has people around who can assist with housekeeping.” To be eligible for this program, patients must meet the following criteria: 60 years or older; Admitted to SGCMH; Does not live in a skilled nursing facility; Are not on Hospice; Reside within the county of Ste. Genevieve; Have documented in their medical record at least one of the following diagnosis--heart failure (CHF), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), diabetes mellitus, heart attack (AMI), or pneumonia (NEU). Yokely will be at SGCMH every Thursday and will also do home visits on this day for the Caring Transitions program. She sees this collaboration with the hospital as a great fit. “I think working together we can be a great team, and serve the patients to meet their needs.” The Quality Improvement (QI) department gets to celebrate all the great things we do and gets to investigate and help guide staff on the not so good things as well. Quality Improvement includes Corporate Compliance, HIPAA, Patient Satisfaction, Event Reports and Risk Management. We monitor the effectiveness, safety and quality of patient care. We collect, report, and respond to event reports and customer and employee feedback. We work with Press Ganey to evaluate and report Patient Satisfaction results. We also work closely with our Risk Management group: Healthcare Services Group. Our goals for 2013 include responding to concerns coming through our department in a timely manner. We also plan to become the safest hospital with the highest quality scores in Southeast Missouri. Be watching for all the great information we will start sharing and posting in your area soon. Our office is open Monday through Friday 8-5 and we always welcome patients and employees. Employees getting first look at M-Tech 6 By: Angie Flieg, RN – IS Clinical Analyst By this time, many of you have read or heard about M-Tech 6 (the NEW Meditech). While Judy was in the process of writing the last TLC article, a group of nurses from SGCMH attended a training at Meditech in Boston to learn PCS (Patient Care & Safety) Clinical Content. This group included Sheila Warren, Debbie Raney, Loretta King (our Navin & Haffty Clinical Consultant) and myself. Clinical Content was primarily an in-depth overview of PCS, which is replacing the current Nursing documentation module. We learned how to navigate within the module, how to access the patient status board and how to access the dictionaries. The dictionaries are where Sheila and I have been constructing the current documentation for Meditech. We use these dictionaries almost daily to create the screens that patient care is documented on. These screens are comprised of interventions, goals, and care plans that are important when caring for acute patients. They set the fashion in which the patient will be cared for. They include everything from daily assessments, provider orders, and times to provide certain care, as well as discharge goals and plans. PCS comprises all of the patient care from admission to discharge. Three of the great things that we have found about M-Tech 6.0 are: 1) Single Sign On: Users will no longer have to remember a separate user name and password for Meditech and Windows. 6.0 will use your windows username! ----- WIN! The old (Magic) Patient Status The new (6.0) Patient Status Board 2) Stacked Windows: While documenting in 6.0 you will find that each place you click, you will get a new window open up. This means that you can actually look at the patient’s vital signs, labs or history while you are documenting. ---- WIN! 3) The screens are much clearer and not as busy: ---- WIN! M-Tech 6 Quiz Take this short M-Tech 6 Quiz and turn it into Marketing. Submissions with all correct answers will be entered in a drawing for hospital logo items. The Marketing Department will draw for 10 items. 1. What is the Go LIVE date for the new Meditech?___________ 2. Who does this project impact? ___________ 3. The newer Meditech will have fewer clicks. ____________ 4. The Meditech 6.0 is their latest, greatest system. _____________ 5. We have not hired consultants to assist with the Magic to 6.0 migration. ________ Name______________________________ Department__________________________ Dr. Matthew Bosner rode the 15-mile route and his son completed the 30mile ride. Friends board members Vickie Winkler and Jodi Uding, APRN-BC, tackled the 8-mile ride on a bicycle built for two! Vickie Wolk was our R & R Raffle winner! Thanks to our medical staff, this raffle brought in close to $1400 for the Ride to Survive! When it’s all said and done, fundraisers, riders/runners/walkers will have raised over $12,000 to benefit cancer care and research at SGCMH. Dozens of Ride to Survive photos can be seen on our Facebook page and a You tube video of the event is available, too. Go to our website and you’ll find a link. Dr. Terri Monahan of Plaza Chiropractic showed her support for our oncology department by donating nearly a dozen, beautiful crocheted prayer shawls. This isn’t the first time she has comforted patients with her craft. She regularly donates shawls to be given to our cancer patients. Pictured (l-r) are Jennifer Jones (Plaza Chiropractic staff member), Dr. Monihan, Sandy Schilli, RN, BSN, OCN (Director of the Alan P. Lyss Center for Cancer Care and Clinical Reserch), and Brenda Wirth (Plaza Chiropractic staff member). Help name Hirshell’s baby This momma bird and her chick have been keeping Occ Med entertained the past month. They’re perched outside the Occ Med window on the scorching hot roof--which apparently is where they like it! Hirshell Parker and his wife are expecting their third child, a boy, later this summer. Their two sons are named Brayden Pujols and Jaren Brennon Musial. He needs you to help in choosing yet another Cardinals name for their next child. Participate in our poll now through July 4th. Hirshell said the Cardinal player whose name you choose must have high moral standards and be a solid role model (at least at the time of this poll). Choose a past or present Cardinals player. If your choice of name is chosen, you will win two Cardinals tickets (to a game yet to be determined). If more than one of you pick the same name, your names will be put in a hat for a drawing. Hirshell’s wife gets final say! In the event that none of the names in our poll make the final cut, no tickets will be awarded. Go to the Grapevine and take the poll. Speaking of Cardinals fans, our auxiliary is raffling off another Cardinals quilt. The quilt is on display in the gift shop and bids are taken there. Stop by the lobby July 11 & 12 for the Auxiliary’s Christmas in July Sale! Items marked 30% off!
