The flower for the month of May is the lily of
the valley. It is
prized for its sweet fragrance—once considered
so precious that water laced
with its essenal oils was stored in gold and
silver containers.
It’s a common folk belief that the scent of this
inedible flower in the spring air
is the signal for nighngales to begin their
seasonal singing and choosing of
a mate. Legend has it that King Charles IX of
France was given this flower on
May 1, 1561. He reportedly then gave the gi,
of lilies of the valley to all the ladies
of his court each year on May 1. Today, lily of
the valley connues to be sold along
the streets of France on May 1.

Birthstone – Emerald
The emerald is the
birthstone for May
and the anniversary
gemstone for the
20th year of marriage.
The ancient Romans
associated this brilliant green
gem
with ferlity and rebirth. In so
doing,
they dedicated the stone to
Venus
—goddess of love and beauty.
Even
today, some believe wearing an
emerald brings wisdom, growth,
and paence—qualies essenal
to
successful and lasng love.
It was the ancient Egypans who
began mining the emerald
around
2000 BC. That was nearly 2,000
years before Cleopatra’s birth.
During Cleopatra’s reign, she
claimed the mines as her own—
wearing lavish emerald-colored
stones as jewelry and, according
to legend, giving vising
dignitaries large emeralds
carved with her likeness. Some
jewelry historians now believe
those gems weren’t emeralds at
all, but rather large emerald-like
gems known as peridot (or the
“Evening Emerald”). That’s
because today emeralds are
mined most prevalently in the
Middle East and South America.
But this gem connues to shine
as the birthstone for May and the
heralding of all things green to
come this spring.

Gimme Five
Cinco de Mayo—which is Spanish for “Fifth of May”—is often a cause for
celebration among Mexicans and most anyone else interested in Mexican food,
drink, and music. Some less-informed revelers will claim Cinco de Mayo as the
day of Mexico’s independence. Those in the know will tell you it celebrates the
Mexican army’s 1862 victory over the French at the Battle of Puebla, led by
General Zaragoza.
In 1862, Mexico had just gained its independence from Spain. France seized this
as an opportunity to expand its empire and launched an assault at Veracruz, a
600-mile march from Mexico City. An underwhelming Mexican militia of 4,500 led
by Zaragoza met the 8,000 well-armed French troops at Puebla. Though the
French army was considered the greatest fighting force in the world, the
Mexicans defeated the French. Six years later, France withdrew its claim on the
country. But it was this May 5 David-versus-Goliath moment that instilled a new
sense of patriotism and national pride in the young country of Mexico.
