Clay Creation and Cultural Artifact Reflection
Assignment #1
PURPOSE:
*To facilitate personal and cultural self-awareness.
*To help you become better acquainted with classmates.
*To give you tools to look beyond stereotypes.
When anthropologists and sociologists interpret the cultural life of societies long
gone, they use artifacts - objects produced by the people of that time - in order
to substantiate their interpretations. Though we have briefly touched on the idea
of culture and cultural symbolism, you will now be asked to look deep into your
own notions culture and put it to life. During this class you will be asked, using the
clay provided to you, to make a symbol, which reveals or represents some
aspect of your own lusophone culture. Do not be afraid to go beyond the realm
of popular culture and folklore, however, feel free to stay in that realm if this is
what you chose to represent your culture.
Nonetheless, as this is not an arts and crafts class, a written component will be
necessary for this assignment. Students will be expected to write a 250-word
reflection on their artifact explaining its connection to their notion of lusophone
culture, which may be specific to a country, region, or town of choice. Be
descriptive when writing and bring your object to life. In your reflection convince
the reader of how and why your object symbolizes your unique lusophone
culture and why it is important.
