Equity and Inclusive Schools Movimento Luso Nome:______________________________ Clay Creation and Cultural Artifact Reflection Assignment #1 PURPOSE: *To facilitate personal and cultural self-awareness. *To help you become better acquainted with classmates. *To give you tools to look beyond stereotypes. When anthropologists and sociologists interpret the cultural life of societies long gone, they use artifacts - objects produced by the people of that time - in order to substantiate their interpretations. Though we have briefly touched on the idea of culture and cultural symbolism, you will now be asked to look deep into your own notions culture and put it to life. During this class you will be asked, using the clay provided to you, to make a symbol, which reveals or represents some aspect of your own lusophone culture. Do not be afraid to go beyond the realm of popular culture and folklore, however, feel free to stay in that realm if this is what you chose to represent your culture. Nonetheless, as this is not an arts and crafts class, a written component will be necessary for this assignment. Students will be expected to write a 250-word reflection on their artifact explaining its connection to their notion of lusophone culture, which may be specific to a country, region, or town of choice. Be descriptive when writing and bring your object to life. In your reflection convince the reader of how and why your object symbolizes your unique lusophone culture and why it is important. To succeed don’t forget to include: • • • • • • • Brainstorm and Draft your ideas before you begin building. Make a rough copy of your analysis and proof read it before submitting Be sure that your analysis has introduction, thesis, body, and conclusion There should be at a minimal 3 paragraphs including your introduction, body, conclusion Your assignment is to be typed, in 12-size font, Times New Roman or Century Gothic. Do include a title page with your submission which follows the rules as depicted in your course reader Your rubric should be stapled as the last page *** Students, who do not have a lusophone background, may choose to depict a symbol, which they feel depicts the essence of lusophonia. Cultural Artifact Reflection: Communication - The conveying of meaning through various forms. (10 Marks) Communication of information and ideas in analysis using designated structure and format.
