Derek Strong
We continue to keep Junior Derek Griffitts and his family in our
prayers. Derek was very recently diagnosed with a brain tumor.
Further test results are still unknown which will direct the type of
treatment he will undergo. The LHS community is rallying around
Derek and his family by purchasing “Derek Strong” t-shirts and
wrist bands. Proceeds from these sales will go to the family to help
with unexpected expenses. Students are asked to wear their Derek
Strong shirt on Wednesday as a show of support for Derek!

Mistake #11:
We do it for them
Have you ever caught yourself saying “I’ll just do it and get it
done right, its easier then teaching them how to do it and
have it done only half-way”. I know I have, however when we
do things for our kids like pick up their clothes, clean their
rooms, complete those forms, or give them the answers to
homework, we are actually harming them. Habits of laziness
and disablement become the norm. The self-esteem
movement of the past 40 years was built on affirmation
alone. Unfortunately, this builds narcissistic attitudes.
Meaningful self-esteem comes through children overcoming
hardship, problems, and frustrations independently.
Mistake #12:
We prepare the path for the child, not the child for the path
Mistake #12 sums up all of the first eleven mistakes. We do a
disservice to our children (and ourselves) by not allowing our
children to fail, praising them when its unwarranted, and
making them the center of our worlds. We do love them,
however, the best gift you can provide your child is to prepare
them for their future. Saving the day now might bring short
term satisfaction, but teaching them to overcome conflict brings
benefits for a lifetime. Research indicates it is not IQ but selfcontrol, perseverance, patience, and critical thinking that
enables kids to flourish. May God continue to bless you in your
parenting journey.
