SPIRITUALITY
"...an instrument of your peace"
Led by Richard O’Donnell
On that fateful "nine-eleven" day, I, like everyone I
knew, searched confusedly for a new kind of courage. We needed an inner defense to match the
morning's outer disaster. By evening, I had located
a near by church offering an evening Mass. I
gratefully participated. Stronger, but still aware of
my spiritual weakness vis-à-vis the morning's Manhattan assault, I rose to start my walk home.
Suddenly, a woman in the church - on her own began to sing "Lord, Make Me an Instrument of
Your Peace." We all knew the hymn and we all
spontaneously sang out. Just as suddenly, I felt a
novel kind and level of spiritual assurance within
me: I became a brave, personal, 'third' tower housing all the American values that were challenged
earlier that day. And I still feel it.
This series is a kind of 'Franciscan' meditation that
has restored my buoyancy of spirit. I hope it does
the same for you.
1. Where there is hatred, let me sow love: caring
for them, no matter
2. Where there is injury, pardon: declaring a soulful amnesty
3. Where there is doubt, faith: strengthening the
conviction of the victory of good
4. Where there is despair, hope: pointing out the
reality beyond the dream
5. Where there is darkness, light: searching for,
learning, and spreading vital truths
6. Where there is sadness, joy: appreciating and
enjoying the good that remains

Do you want to do something to help our soldiers
serving overseas? We send packages to our
troops on a regular basis, not just during the holidays. If possible items should be fragrance free,
no pork products, no perishables, glass or crushable items. Think of items useful and easily packable! Short list of suggested items that we are often in need of to send our troops: Disposable
cameras, snacks & candy (individually wrapped),
drink mixes to be mixed in water, peanut butter &
crackers, sunscreen, toiletries, razors, AA batteries, sanitizers & wipes, personal care items, and
personal notes! Personal notes to our soldiers
from adults or school children are always needed
and really boost their morale, letting them know
that the people back home support them! Please
do not date them.
Monetary donations are gladly accepted if you
wish to help defray the costs of shipping or to
buy any other needed items. Each box we
send currently costs about $16.00. Let us
know if you would like a tax deductible receipt as
we are a Charitable 501(c)(3). Checks can be
made to Support the Troops Inc.
If you know of anyone currently serving overseas,
especially from our local area, contact us with
their full name and address and how long they will
be serving at that address and, if possible, any
other information. We will gladly add them to our
list to send them a care package as well.
Thank you!
