“Throughout history, artists have known that art provides benefits for both the creator and viewer.
Current studies in the fields of art therapy, music therapy, and other creative modalities confirm that art
can affect individuals in positive ways by inducing both psychological and physiological healing. We know
that, in general, exercising our creative selves enhances quality of life and nurtures overall well-being. We
all are creative—not just a select few.” Aging: What’s Art Got To Do With It? ~By Barbara Bagan,
PhD, ATR-BC
“Nothing can compare to the joy of making beautiful music; whether it is Bach or Beatles. It is a
great stress release because you can’t think of anything other than the music while you are playing.”
~George VanDoren, Lehigh Valley Pops Orchestra
“If you hear a voice within you say 'you cannot paint,' then by all means paint, and that voice will
be silenced.” ~Vincent Van Gogh
“Whatever troubles you have, art allows you to focus on your creativity and releases your anxiety
and pain; and brings joy to your life.” ~Studio Arts Class
“There is a fountain of youth: it is your mind, your talents, the creativity you bring to your life and
the lives of people you love. When you learn to tap this source, you will truly have defeated age.”
~Sophia Loren

Health
“When we think we have been
hurt by someone in the past, we build
up defenses to protect ourselves from
being hurt in the future. So the fearful past causes a fearful future and
the past and future become one. We
cannot love when we feel fear… When
we release the fearful past and forgive
everyone, we will experience total love
and oneness with all.”

Communication in this millennium will weave a
global web that you and I can only begin to imagine.
What we can be sure of, however, is that language
itself will metamorphize with a unity of structure and
lexicon far beyond historical experience. The present
series - besides being a very entertaining event - will
uncover linguistic affinities that have already been
evolving over long stretches of time and space. The
story of language, after all, is the story of common
sense - articulated. It is also a tale of high adventure!
Our study will be especially interested in the
blend of Anglo-Saxon and French that needed only the
‘Tudor touch’ to form our mother tongue, a language of
remarkable versatility. This facet of English can best be
appreciated in the scope and flexibility characteristic of
American usage.
Finally, a realistic study of language recognizes that words and ways with words ultimately come
from men, not manuals. A living language is as colorful
and diverse as the speakers themselves. Listeners
beware! Led by Richard O’Donnell
1. “And He Oped His Mouth and Spake . . .”- the
great conversation begins
2. The Rivers Run Together- the roots and routes of
language
3. Beowulf Meets the Bard- creating the Queen’s
English
4. Is There an American Language?- just listen
5. Cherchez le Mot Juste- each moment has its own
Proper articulation
6. It’s the Communication, Stupid!- vernaculars,
slang, jargon, argot, patois, etc.

CARE PACKAGES FOR SOLDIERS
Do you want to do something to help our soldiers
serving overseas? We send packages to our
troops on a regular basis, not just during the holidays. If possible items should be fragrance free,
no pork products, no perishables, glass or crushable items. Think of items useful and easily packable! Short list of suggested items that we are often in need of to send our troops: Disposable
cameras, snacks & candy (individually wrapped),
drink mixes to be mixed in water, peanut butter &
crackers, sunscreen, toiletries, razors, AA batteries, sanitizers & wipes, personal care items, and
personal notes! Personal notes to our soldiers
from adults or school children are always needed
and really boost their morale, letting them know
that the people back home support them! Please
do not date them.
Monetary donations are gladly accepted if you
wish to help defray the costs of shipping or to
buy any other needed items. Each box we
send currently costs about $16.00. Let us know
if you would like a tax deductible receipt as we are
a Charitable 501(c)(3). Checks can be made to
Support the Troops Inc.
If you know of anyone currently serving overseas,
especially from our local area, contact us with
their full name and address and how long they will
be serving at that address and, if possible, any
other information. We will gladly add them to our
list to send them a care package as well.
Thank you!

Diane L. Yudt
Diane L. Yudt: A Life of Quiet Service
Diane L. Yudt was a librarian in the Salisbury School District in the 1970’s and
1980’s at Washington Elementary, Salisbury Elementary, Western Salisbury Elementary,
and Harry S. Truman Elementary schools. She really enjoyed her job and was good at
what she did. She had a deep love of reading and was able to capture the interest of her
students by showing them the wonderful worlds that awaited them when they read a book.
Diane grew up in Emmaus. She was an only child and lovingly cared for her parents until both passed away. She deeply appreciated the Lehigh Valley and gave back in
many ways. She was active in her church and volunteered for many organizations.
Diane was a quiet person with a few close friendships that she really cherished.
She struggled with various health problems throughout her life, yet smiled, laughed and
enjoyed all that life had to offer. She was a very nurturing person, filled with compassion,
and quietly helped others throughout her life.
Sadly, Diane passed away on May 18, 2012. She asked that her estate be provided to Lehigh Valley Active Life to continue our mission of service.
Funds from the estate have been received over the past two years and have allowed us to make a number of significant improvements. A new heating and cooling system was installed, flooring in three classrooms were replaced, the exterior was painted,
exterior bricks were repointed, and a new name, Lehigh Valley Active Life, was created
and marketed. All of this was done using the gains from the investment received by the
Diane L. Yudt estate. The principal remains for future improvements.
Thanks to the overwhelming generosity of Diane L. Yudt, Lehigh Valley Active
Life has a bright future. In her memory, the Tree of Life, our way to recognize gifts, is now
named The Diane L. Yudt Tree of Life.
The memory of Diane L. Yudt will be forever a part of the success that is Lehigh
Valley Active Life. For this we are very grateful, and we honor her with this memorial.
Sincerely,
Rick Daugherty
Executive Director
