Time and Expertise As plants are demanding and require time and space to grow: and so time, space and expertise are the most important “ingredients” to produce a real Lorenz von Ehren tree. Our oldest avenue and parkland trees are up to 100 years old. They have been nurtured, watered, fertilised and pruned countless times and transplanted every four years. 150 years of nursery tradition is enough time to gather a wealth of experience and the incentive to stay ahead. We have been supporting science and research projects for many decades and urban trees are currently the focus of attention. We know that we have to keep offering trees which are resistant to heat, frost and climatic fluctuations. Trees of Unique Character If only trees could tell their stories … Our choice of plants includes specimens with character: distinctive, individual plants of unique habit and extraordinary old age. All these magnificent specimens have been carefully pruned by the Lorenz von Ehren topiary experts. A clue lies in the name however: trees of unique character are available in limited quantities, and the choice of plants changes all the time. Top Quality Trees You can expect the highest quality from all our trees, because we meet the highest standards of production: FLL standards (German Landscape Research, Development and Construction Society) and BdB standards (German Nurseries Association). When it comes to quality we believe you should not make any compromises in the long term. As well as a wide range of urban and avenue trees, specimen trees and topiary, we also offer regional plants to protect biodiversity. Lorenz von Ehren nurseries have been awarded the highest certificates by the Regional Plants Certification Association (ZgG). “Ökoprofit” (eco profit) is our environmental programme, certificates for this demonstrate our efforts to protect the environment. We are proud to be one of the leading European Nurseries. The family-owned company is now run by the fifth generation. Since the foundation in 1865 by Johannes von Ehren, this passion still drives us to provide the best service and the highest quality. Planting your Ideas We invite you to visit us at Lorenz von Ehren nurseries. 150 years of nursery history. 150 years of production history. 150 years of plant trading history. We cannot imagine any better product! Bernhard von Ehren P.S. Celebrate with us! From 3 to 6 September 2015 Konrad Parloh A Glimpse into our History The son of a sea captain, Johannes von Ehren (1832-1906) might have chosen another career, but he decided to learn the gardener’s craft at the renowned nursery of James Booth – it was a wise choice. He was soon to follow in the steps of his predecessor and establish his own nursery. Local demand for trees from wealthy Hamburg residents coupled with the start of an economic upturn led to an increasing clientele. By 1872, the nursery was delivering plants to Potsdam, Copenhagen and even, in 1875, to Russia. Trees for the World Johannes’ son, Lorenz von Ehren (1867-1948) worked hard to expand the production area and dedicated himself to raising and selling specimens and large trees, a specialty that remained of great importance through to the present day. In 1904 the nurserymen succeeded in hauling a 40 year old weeping beech over a distance of 9 km – an enormous effort at that time. Soon trees were being dispatched to the United Kingdom, Denmark and St. Petersburg. From 1914 the Lorenz von Ehren nursery was the acknowledged purveyor to the Prussian Court. Trees or Cauliflower? The nursery experienced steep cuts resulting from World War I, high inflation and the Great Depression. Recovery was slow in the years that followed; but World War II had the greatest impact. The population was starving as food was short in supply, and so the nursery fields had to be cleared – except for some of the most valuable shrubs and trees – and they were used for growing fruit and vegetables. Instead of beautiful trees, now cauliflower was cultivated. In this difficult time, the third generation of the von Ehren family, the brothers Johannes II (18991982) and Lorenz II (1906-1982) took over the management. By the end of the war there was only a small fraction of plants left. Replenishing the stock could only start again in 1949. To the Other Side of the River The brothers Lorenz III (*1937) and Bernd von Ehren (*1938) continued the family tradition. They shaped Lorenz von Ehren Nurseries’ image decisively with their corporate vision and their instinct for reading market trends. They extended the area under cultivation, the company became international and new product lines were introduced: large bonsai, extraordinary evergreen topiary, distinctive ornamental plants and the trend for planting extensive groundcovers. In 1965 the Bad Zwischenahn branch was founded. In 1993 the headquarters were moved to Marmstorf, south of the river Elbe. The Nursery Now With Bernhard von Ehren (*1972) as managing director since 2013 the company is now in its fifth generation of von Ehren. He joined the company in 2001 and has operated as the Director since 2005. In 2007 Konrad Parloh (*1958) joined the company’s management board. The cultivated areas in Hamburg, Bad Zwischenahn and Rellingen have been extended and cover more than 550 hectares. Approximately 170 members of staff look after the trees and specimen plants growing in the Lorenz von Ehren fields. Our expert team provides support and advice to our national and international customers. For 150 years we have been appreciating quality and delivering good service.
