SHADOWING THE WORLD OF WORK “I enjoyed everything about it”. In March 88 Year 10 students from Manchester Enterprise and Knutsford Academies spent a morning or afternoon at Manchester Airport sampling a ‘bite sized experience’ of working life at the Airport. Students grasped the opportunity by shadowing colleagues in many roles offered by hosts employed here. On arrival, students and their mentors were ‘paired up’ before being taken to their work area of interest where they spent a couple of hours on a whistle stop tour. Colleagues talked about their day-to-day duties and the qualifications and experience required to get the job. Some pupils were fortunate to visit the Thomas Cook Hangar and see five different aircraft in different stages of refurbishment before going on board and chatting to an engineer about his role. Other students spent time with Head Office based colleagues in the Information Technology and Planning departments and others chose more operational roles such as The Fire Service, Catering Company SSP, World Duty Free Retail, Galliford Try Civil Engineers, NATS (air traffic control) and Emirates Airlines. Students were ‘buzzing’ by the end of the session and were eager to tell one another about their exciting experiences. Their ‘hands on’ session has motivated some of the students to pursue a career in their job shadow role. manchesterairport.co.uk/communitylinks manchesterairport.co.uk/communitylinks WORLD BOOK WEEK IS A LITERARY SUCCESS Manchester Airport volunteers paid a visit to schools in Wythenshawe, Mobberley and Knutsford during March to celebrate World Book Day. Over 40 colleagues from different areas of the airport including chaplaincy, terminals, offices and WHSmiths shops paid visits to five local schools, as part of the World Book Day initiative. Pupils at Sandilands, St Aidans RC and Sacred Heart Catholic, Mobberley and Manor Park Primary Schools heard about the many different types of jobs available at the Airport and how important literacy is in the workplace regardless of what job they would like to do in the future. Reading volunteers read their chosen books to their classes, followed by a chat and questions about their story. The sessions were designed to encourage children to read books and develop reading skills from an early age so that in the future they will have the skills to secure their dream job. Retailer WHSmith, which has shops in all three Airport Terminals, supported the initiative by donating enough £1 World Book Day books for each child at each school to take home and keep. A donation of £75 Achievement Reward Vouchers were also given to each school to help boost their library resource. After one airport volunteer had read to a class, a teacher commented: “It is lovely that the children can take the book home. The children were all engaged in listening to the story and seemed to really enjoy it. They were also interested in jobs at the Airport”. CLEARING OUT FOR CHARITY Manchester Airport Colleagues had a ‘spring clean’ for local charities. Donations of clothing, books and bric-a-brac were donated supporting three charities; • St Ann’s Hospice; who every year care for around 3,000 patients (over the age of 16) affected by cancer and noncancer life limiting illnesses -and their families/carers. • The Tree of Life; an organisation which works in partnership with others to create a sustainable resource to improve the health and wellbeing of people in Wythenshawe -to increase their ability to participate in the wider community. • Otterspool Animal Haven; an animal sanctuary based in Stockport, who take in and re-home unwanted cats and dogs.
