ASCENSION PARISH LIBRARY When Gary Cross and his wife learned that their baby son Brad had hemophilia, it seemed like a small bump in the road of their American dream family life. Medicine would make it all manageable. However, the Crosses did not know that the shots they were giving Brad for his condition carried a deadly virus. As AIDS began to dominate the headlines, Gary started to doubt the doctors' assurances that everything was OK with Brad's treatment. His demand for answers brought to light disturbing revelations: thousands of hemophiliacs like Brad had been infected with HIV, because the blood used for their clotting factor injections came from high-risk donor groups. While caring for his ailing son, Gary embarked on a campaign for justice for Brad and the thousands like him. His efforts took him from the courtrooms to the steps of the Capitol in Washington D.C. The TUESDAY, MAY 5 Crosses' heartbreaking 6 PM GALVEZ personal story was broadcast nationally on CBS' 60 Minutes. G E T I N TO BIRDING Louisiana is a great place for birding. The varied terrain forms a nurturing habitat for vast numbers of birds, including both those that are native to the region and many that migrate to or through the area each year. Many species of songbirds, raptors, and water fowl can be found here. You can visit state parks and national wildlife refuges around the state that are great places for birding and bird photography. If you would like to learn more about birding and how to make your backyard attractive to birds, check out these items from the library: ADULTS A Birder's Guide to Louisiana, Richard Gibbons; Roger Breedlove; Charles Lyon, LA 598.0723 GIB Gardening for the Birds: How to Create a Bird-friendly Backyard, George Adams, 639.978 ADA Birdwatching or birding has been gaining in popularity for many years. In fact, according to a study published by the United States Forest Service in 2013 there were an estimated 47 million Americans who participated in birding in some form. Of that number, 712,000 were in Louisiana. The study projected that the popularity of birding would grow between 4 and 8 percent over the next 50 years. With landscapes ranging from coastal wetlands to rolling hills and prairies, Page 4 Bird-watcher's Bible: A Complete Treasury--Science, Know-how, Beauty, Lore, 598.072 BIR You might spot beautiful songbirds like American Robins, Eastern Bluebirds, or Painted Buntings. If you’re quick enough, you can catch a glimpse of a Rubythroated Hummingbird. Following the sound of a steady rat-a-tat-tat might lead you to see the Pileated Woodpecker with its flaming red crest. If there is a pond or some wetlands nearby you might witness Canadian Geese or a Black-bellied Whistling Duck. There are many beautiful and interesting birds to see in Louisiana. However, you don’t have to travel to see many of the birds found here. You can practice birding at home by making your yard an attractive place for birds to visit. By providing birds with their basic needs of food, water, shelter, and/or nesting sites, you might get some regular visitors. Birdfeeders are the easiest way to enjoy watching birds in your yard. Outraged librarians launched a campaign to send free books to American troops and gathered 20 million hardcover donations. In 1943, the War Department and the publishing industry stepped in with an extraordinary program: 120 million small, lightweight paperbacks, for troops to carry in their pockets and their rucksacks, in every theater of war. Comprising 1,200 different titles of every imaginable type, these paperbacks were beloved by the troops and are still fondly remembered today. Soldiers read them while waiting to land at Normandy; in hellish trenches in the midst of battles in the Pacific; in field hospitals; and on long bombing Page 12 flights. They wrote to the authors, many of whom responded to every letter. They helped rescue "The Great Gatsby" from obscurity. They made Betty Smith, author of "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn," into a national icon. "When Books Went to War "is an inspiring story for history buffs and book lovers alike.
