A Beginners Guide To Birds and Birding
Ballito. March 14 & 15 2015
This course is ideal for anyone wanting to learn more about birds
and birding. From the casual garden birder, interested in the
birds that visit their home to more experienced birders wanting to
further hone their skills.

excellent overview on how to identify birds and birding skills. For
more experienced bird watchers, the course will add a lot of
value when identifying difficult families and improve your overall
field and identification skills.
The course will be held on Saturday the 14th March 2015 and
will include a practical field outing to some of our local

Your trainer for this course will be Duncan Pritchard. Duncan has
over 20 years experience with birds and birding
ranging from being a specialist bird guide in the
Okavango Delta to managing BirdLife South
Africa’s Tourism and Guide Training Programs
for over 10 years. Duncan has also consulting
on birds and birding across Africa and as far
afield as Mexico, Australia and Canada.

The Course
Course Program

14 March 2015 (09h00-10h30) Bird Identification, the basics.
Learn how to pick the correct binoculars, field guides and other tools that suit you best, essential tricks and
skills as well as the “eight point framework”, a vital tool for identifying birds.

14 March 2015 (11h00-13h00) separating the different bird families.
We take a close look at all the main bird families, their distinguishing features and habits. We will look at all
the bird families that occur on South Africa and how to recognize them in the field. Special attention will be
placed on confusing families and groups of birds that look similar.

14 March 2015 (14h00-16h00) Working with difficult to identify birds
The final evening training will focus in on the LBJ’s (little brown jobs.) We will learn the many tricks for
identifying these difficult birds from LBJ’s (Cisticolas, Larks, Pipits) to Birds of Prey and Waders / Water Birds

15 March 2015 (08h00-12h00) Practical outing
We take get into the field birding at some of our local wetland where you can get hands on advice and
experience putting your newfound skills into practice.
