PARISH BUSINESS
Fourth Sunday of Easter
Reflection
Worldwide Marriage Encounter
Bishop Conlon and the Joliet Diocese Presbyteral
Council have asked that parishes focus attention on
Worldwide Marriage Encounter during the weekend of
April 25–26. Marriage Encounter has been a presence
in our diocese for many years, powerfully affecting
many marriages, and through them, our church. Please
consider attending or encouraging others to attend a
Marriage Encounter Weekend.
For more information, please to www.wwmechicagoland.org or call Gabriela and Javier Vargas at
630-621-8984 for Marriage Encounter in Spanish or
John and Allison Lausas at 630-719-1321 for Marriage
Encounter in English. The next English and Spanish
weekends are on June 12–14.
This weekend, April 25–26, Visitation will be playing a three–minute video in the Parish Center that
explains WWME.
In our politically charged society, I imagine many
have heard the quote, “It takes a village...” Whether or
not one likes the politics of the author of that quote, in
the words are truth. It takes many people to create and
sustain a community.
For those of us who are Catholic, we believe in the power
of vocations to help spread the Gospel message. And vocations are an important part of the community. The vocations
to priesthood, or the deaconate, or religious life are at the
center of our efforts to spread the good news. “Behold, I
stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and
opens the door, then I will enter his house and dine with
him, and he with me” (Rv 3:20).
We hear in Scripture that Jesus stands at the door of our
heart and knocks. He only invites and never demands or
breaks into our lives without our acceptance. He knocks, we
open the door, and the invitation and welcome are complete.
“How long has Jesus been knocking at the door of your
heart, waiting to enter?” -St. John Baptist de la Salle.
“And I will lay down my life for the sheep.” Jesus himself gave us the image of himself as the Good Shepherd. In
trying to teach us about who he was, his love for us, and his
mission to save us, he chose to speak in these terms. The
picture is a comforting one. We can imagine the natural
beauty of a shepherd on a hillside, gently leading and guiding his sheep to the places where all their needs are met. The
shepherd makes sure they are fed, watered, rested, and, of
course, safe. This last element is what separates a good
shepherd from a bad one. When a threat approaches his
flock, the good shepherd will do whatever is necessary to
save them, even at risk of his own safety. The bad shepherd,
on the other hand, thinks only of himself and abandons the
sheep in order to protect his own skin.
It's important, in understanding the analogy, for us to realize that we, the sheep of Christ’s pasture, do face real threats,
though they may be the kind that are hard to recognize. The
wolves that prowl around our souls are the vices of anger,
jealousy, lust, greed, gluttony, vanity, and laziness. We traditionally call these the seven deadly sins, and they are truly
deadly. When we give in to them, we cut off our souls from
the source of real life: God. But Jesus is the Good Shepherd,
who lays down his life for us, literally. Jesus suffered and died
on the cross, taking away the deadly consequence of sin. This
selfless act has saved us by offering the forgiveness and reconciliation that our souls, weak and weary from the attacks of
evil, desperately need. What a gift to be in the care of such a
shepherd. What a joy to be in this flock where, as Jesus says,
“I know mine and mine know me.”

FAITH FORMATION
Faith Matt-ers
By Matt Pozen—Director of Parish Faith Formation
St. Paul the Apostle
Last week we began to explore Paul’s 1st missionary journey
(Acts 13-14), which began from Antioch in 46 AD. He and
Barnabas and John Mark sailed first to the island of Cyprus and
preached Christ to their fellow Jews in the synagogues, and also
to Gentiles. In Acts 13:9 we read: “Saul, also known as Paul.”
Even though I have been referring to him as “Paul” all along, Acts
refers to him as “Saul” up until 13:9, and then from that point on
it refers to him as “Paul”. It is not that he changed his name, but
rather, like many Jews who lived outside of Palestine in the
Greco–Roman world, he had a traditional Hebrew name as well as
a Greek or Romanized name. Acts seems to imply that as Paul
moved his mission beyond his fellow Jews into the Gentile world,
he went by his Romanized name. Paulus in Latin means “small”,
but he was given this name not because of his size, but more likely because of its similarity of sound to Saulos.
After sailing from Cyprus, Paul and his co–workers arrived in
the region of Pamphylia in southern Asia Minor. Pamphylia was in
the southern part of the Roman province of Galatia, so it may have
been to communities there that Paul later wrote his letter to the
Galatians (54 AD). Acts presents the Gentiles as more open than
the Jews to Paul’s message, but they presented other challenges.
While Jews believed in the one God of Israel, the Gentiles often
believed in many gods, and they were often influenced by magic,
superstition, and idol worship. So Paul had to try to first bring
Gentiles to faith in the one God of Israel, and then proclaim Jesus
as the Son of this one God. Finally, he had to convince the Gentiles
to abandon their superstitious religious practices and to follow the
much stricter Judeo-Christian moral code This was no easy task.
Paul felt called to get the message of the good news out to the
whole world as he knew it, so he never stayed too long in any one
city. At this early point there were no written gospels (the first
gospel, Mark, was probably written circa 70 AD). So the early
Church was reliant on the oral tradition about Jesus as handed
down by the apostles. Paul probably learned this oral tradition of
the life, miracles, sayings, death, and resurrection of Jesus when
he visited the apostles in Jerusalem after his conversion. In his letters that are preserved in the New Testament Paul gives us almost
no information about the life and sayings and deeds of Jesus.
Instead, his whole focus is on the death and resurrection of Jesus
the Christ, and what this means for the world.
It is important to note that the earliest Christian missionary
enterprise focused on towns and cities; it was essentially an urban
movement. It would be several centuries before Christianity
began to take root among people in the countryside. In fact, the
Latin word pagan simply means a farmer or person living in a
rural area, thus revealing that it was these poor and uneducated
people who proved most resistant to leaving behind their traditional religions and embracing faith in Christ. Also, recall that
Paul grew up in the thriving Greco–Roman city of Tarsus, so he
felt most at home among people living in an urban environment.
If you’re interested in the story of the Church’s early years, you
might want to follow the new NBC mini-series, “A.D.: The Bible
Continues”. It premiered on Easter Sunday night, and will continue on Sunday nights for the next several weeks (10 episodes).
Also, see the ad on the next page (pg. 6) for my upcoming series
on the early Church (30- 130 AD).

The Pope’s Problematic Priority
by
St. John Paul II’s extravagant love for Christ in the
Eucharist sometimes became problematic for his handlers. In
fact, the prefect of the Papal Household often warned the
organizers of papal event to make sure not to allow the Pope
to pass within view of a place where the Eucharist was
reserved. Otherwise, he’d surely enter the chapel for prolonged periods of time and the entire schedule would be
thrown off.
To St. John Paul II, it was not enough for Catholics to
receive the Eucharist. One also must contemplate It. He
said that when one ponders the love that is present in the
tabernacle:
…love is ignited within us, love is renewed within us.
Therefore, these are not hours spent in idleness, when we isolate ourselves from our work, but these are moments, hours,
when we undertake something that constitutes the deepest
meaning of all of our work. For no matter how numerous our
activities, our exertions—if there is no love, everything
becomes meaningless. When we devote our time to ponder
the mystery of love, to allow it to radiate in our hearts, we are
preparing ourselves in the best possible way for any kind of
service, for any activity, for any charitable work. (from Saint
John Paul the Great).
We have a special need for partners for Monday 3:00–4:00
P.M. and Saturday Noon–1:00 P.M. Please help keep our
Chapel running smoothly. Call Owen or Gail at 630-5730033 to register.

Immersed in Saving Grace is a school devotional program
sponsored by the Joliet Catholic Schools office. At the start
of the program we went to Joliet for an opening prayer service that was designed to teach us about grace. We saw a
PowerPoint about how we can immerse ourselves in God’s
grace. God’s grace is His free love and everything that He
gives us. Then, over the next few weeks we presented that
PowerPoint to other grades in the school. The other grades
learned from us what God’s grace is, how they can immerse
themselves in God’s grace, and what immersing ourselves in
grace means. Throughout the school year, we used what we
had learned at the opening ceremony and what we learned in
our power point. This was a great experience and we learned
a lot about our faith and how we can strengthen it.

vocations to the priesthood.
Please join us on Monday evenings at 7:00 P.M. to pray
for our pastor, all priests, our Bishop, the Holy Father and
