MAMA Project Annual Recreational Volleyball Tournament Women’s Tournament & Co-Ed Tournament LEVEL OF PLAY: This tournament is typically a B/BB level of play. It is a tournament meant as a fundraiser for MAMA Project, to have fun and support the project. There are some competitive teams in the tournament but most are at the B/BB level of play. START OF PLAY: To determine which team begins service, a volley will be done. Ball must be hit three times on the first side before going over. SCORING: We will play 1 game to 25 points (rally score). Team needs to win by 2 points (cap at 30 points). For the game in the final round, 3 games to 15 points will be played. The best of 3 is the winner of the tournament. SWITCHING SIDES: Before the game starts, the teams will decide whether or not they would like to switch sides at 15 points. PLAYERS: Each team can have 6 players on the court. The minimum number for a team is 3 players. CO-ED TOURNAMENT PLAYERS There must be an equal number or more of women than men on the court at all times. For example, there can be 3 men, 3 women or 4 women and 2 men. But there may not be 4 men and 2 women. A match may not be dominated by a small group of players. The referee will determine if play is fair. Serving order should be man, woman, man, etc. as much as possible. SERVING: The server may not step on or over the end line until the ball has been contacted. RECEIVING SERVE: There must be a minimum one hit, and a maximum of three hits to get the ball over the net. No blocking or spiking the serve. A serve hitting the net and going over is legal. Note that according to the International Rules (Section 10.2.1) the ball may touch any part of the body. This means that kicked or even headed balls are legal hits. However, it may not be forcefully kicked or lay against the body. A ball may not be touched twice by the same person in succession. Players can return the serve by: Bump pass, clasping hands together, closed fist or a set. Revised 2014 page 1 of 2 BOUNDARY LINES: If the ball hits the line, it is in. If the ball hits the antennae on either end of the net, it is out. The ball is still in play if it hits the ceiling, rafters, lights and if it does not then cross the net. If the ball hits the ceiling, lights, rafters and then goes over, it is out-of-bounds. If the ball hits a side wall, it is “out”. If the ball hits a backboard (suspended on the ceiling): (1) On a serve, the serve can be replayed. (2) If it makes contact and the ball goes back to the same team, it can be ruled “in-play” up to 3 hits. (3) If the ball makes contact and goes over the net and remains in-bounds, play should continue as normal. (4) If the ball makes contact and goes over the net and is out of bounds, it is a “side-out”, and point goes to receiving team. UNDER/OVER NET POSITIONS: Hands may go under or over the net, but may not touch the net. Feet may not cross the line into the opponent’s court. SPIKING: The ball must be cleanly hit when spiking with an open hand. Guiding or carrying is illegal. *A carry is any use of an open hand(s) while making contact with the ball that is not in a firm manner. Back row spiking (in front of the attack line-10 ft from net) is not permitted. Revised 2014 page 2 of 2
