T. Nagar Residents’ Welfare Association (30, Rangan
Street, T. Nagar) has advised domestic power consumers
not to pay any money for digital energy meters being
installed by Tamilnadu Generation and Distribution
Corporation (TANGEDCO) in place of conventional energy
meters since this is being done as part of the Central
Government sponsored program at ‘no cost’ to the
consumers. The Association said that reports in some
newspapers alleged that the staff who come to replace the
old meters with the digital ones are duping unwary
consumers by demanding a ‘fee’ ranging from Rs. 175 to Rs.
250 per meter.
In view of the clarification, the Association asked
consumers to report such demands to higher officials.

Thirumalai Road, T. Nagar),
who has been acting for 50
years, was felicitated recently
by Rotary Club of Madras T.
Nagar.
She started acting when she
was 3 months old by appearing
in Ambala Anjulam (1959) and
has so far acted in 175 films in
Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Malayalam and Kannada.
She started acting on stage
at the age of 5 and has acted in
more than 5000 stage plays.
She has had various roles in
more than 30 TV serials.
She has produced and directed a number of TV serials
which have been aired by Sun,
Jaya, Kalaignar, Vijay and
other channels. Many of her
productions have bagged
awards.
‘Kutti’ Padmini has also appeared in shows aired by TV
channels in Singapore, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Tokyo and other
countries.
She has won a number of
awards including National
Award for Best Child Artiste
(‘Kuzhanthaiyum Deivamum’)
which was presented to her by
Indira Gandhi (former Prime
Minister) in 1968, Lifetime
Achievement Award from

The Tamil move music charmer G. Ramanathan continued
to be in top form as the 1950s rolled over the blue horizon and
melted into the 1960s.
To use a cricket idiom, he played strokes all round the wicket
which included folk tale romances like ‘Sri Valli’, the adaptation
of foreign movies (‘Scaramouche[) like ‘Arasilankumari’, and
politically motivated historic movies like ‘Veerapandiya
Kattabomman’.
‘Kappalottiya Thamizhan‘ is a much discussed film even
after half a century and more because of its political significance and the various consequences of the movie, some of
which are not complementary to the makers.
The film had an excellent cast consisting of some of the
biggest stars of Tamil cinema like Sivaji Ganesan, Gemini
Ganesan, K. Savithri, S.V. Subbaiah, S.V. Ranga Rao, T.K.
Shanmugham, Chittoor V.Nagaiah and supported by lesser
stars like T.S. Durairaj, A. Karunanidhi, M.N. Kannappa, T.P.
Muthulakshmi and top stuntman ‘Stunt’ Somu.
‘Kappalottiya Thamizhan’ was launched by the noted multilingual filmmaker, B.R.Panthulu who produced movies in
Kannada, Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi. He directed movies and
also played roles in most of them. He had been known as a
character actor in Kannada theatre and cinema before he
came into Tamil cinema in the late 1930s. He made memorable
movies based on the lives of Karna, Sundara Pandian and this
film about Va. Vi. Chidambaram Pillai, popularly known as
Kappalottiya Thamizhan, a sadly underrated leader of the
Indian Freedom Movement.
The film was based on the biography of V. O. Chidambaram
Pillai written by Ma. Po. Si. (M. P. Sivagnana Gramani).
Popularly known as Va. Vu. Si, V. O. Chidambaram Pillai had
founded the Swadeshi Steam Navigation Company to break
the monopoly of the British over maritime trade.

He said that ‘katrazhai’ juice has a number of medicinal virtues but
is mainly suitable for summer season.
Vijay, who works as an air-conditioner mechanic in a private
concern, said that his aim is to popularize ‘katrazhai’ juice as a health
drink.
He said that he learnt to extract the juice from Paramananthan
who sells it on Marina beach.
Vijay said that he buys ‘katrazhai’ from Red Hills and prepares the
juice at the spot.
He sells a cup for Rs. 25 and has regular customers.
