LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Staff shortage at Lake View Road ration shop
Sir, The ration shop no. HC009 which was in a dilapidated condition
was to be shifted to a new location on Lake View Road. However, the
decision was rescinded at the last minute and it is now operating out
of shop no. HC007 (off Rameswaram Road) for the past several
months which itself is located in a makeshift shed. This has burdened
the consumers as the shop is not able to handle the additional quota.
With limited space, the staff of both the shops operates under severe
stress. Furthermore, the shops share only one electronic scale for
weighment and just one assistant to deliver the articles to the
cardholders for both the shops. Owing to fear of depletion of stock of
essential commodities, cardholders queue up during the first three/four
days of every month with the result that there is utter chaos due to
shortage of space and staff at both the shops. Moreover there are a
couple of industrial units and a poorly maintained canteen close by
which are not keeping the surroundings clean. At night the surroundings are converted into an open urinal. The issue was also brought to
the notice of V. P. Kalairajan (T. Nagar MLA) in November last year
and he had immediately spoken to the Asst. Commissioner (Civil
Supplies). The Association had also written a number of letters to the
AC with copies to higher officials. However no action has been taken
so far to find a new location for shop. At least till such time an
alternative premises is found for HC009, it is incumbent upon the
authorities to deploy the minimum required staff so as to ease the
pressure now being felt by the cardholders.— V.N.S. Jayaraman,
Secretary, T. Nagar Residents’ Welfare Association, 30, Rangan
Street, T. Nagar
Garbage enclosures a health hazard to residents
Sir, On 10th Avenue,
close to its junction
with Govindan Street,
Ashok Nagar, the Corporation has constructed a 20-foot-long
enclosure on the pavement to keep garbage
bins. The garbage enclosure adjoins the
compound of my
house. The door to the
enclosure is always
open which gives access to passerby to use it as an open urinal. Even
passing vehicle drivers relieve themselves here as it affords privacy.
During early mornings and at nighttime, the enclosure is also misused
as a toilet. The enclosure and its surroundings stinks throughout the
day and me and my family members are the most affected by it as our
house adjoins the enclosure. I have written to the Corporation officials
and also the Mayor to relocate the enclosure to a non-residential area
but to no effect. Such large enclosures are found in a number of
residential places in the city and the story is the same everywhere. The
Corporation should assess the difficulties and health issues of the
public before erecting garbage enclosures in residential areas. I hope
the concerned authorities act soon to my grievance.— V.K. Natarajan,
1st floor, Kala Flats, 10th Avenue, Ashok Nagar

Corporation pushes T. Nagar
skywalk project in public meet
Chennai Mayor Saidai S Duraisamay, along with Corporation officials and project consultants, held a meet with representatives of
residents, commercial establishments and roadside vendors of
Mambalam and T. Nagar on May 6 at Ripon Building to alleviate the
concerns regarding its proposed pedestrian skywalk project in T.
Nagar. The skywalk is expected to reduce pedestrian-vehicular conflict
in the congested neighbourhood.
The Corporation in March had approved the feasibility reports for the
skywalk linking Mambalam Suburban Railway Station with T. Nagar Bus Terminus and another connecting Fort
Station with Parry’s Corner.
The proposed L-shaped T. Nagar skywalk will be 600 meters long and will have four entry and exit points. It will also
have ramps and escalators for the convenience of the pedestrians.
The two skywalks will be disabled-friendly, and will have escalators and multiple entry and exit points. They will also
be fitted with LED lights, solar panels, CCTVs, sign boards, fire extinguishers, ladders, dustbins, flower pots and
rainwater harvesting systems. A vendor representative said that they sell goods on the streets and if the skywalk is
constructed, pedestrians will use it, affecting their livelihood.
The authorities convinced the vendors that the skywalk will leave ample road space and will not disturb shops.
However some resident representatives said that if the hawkers were removed, there would be enough road space
for pedestrians and there would be no need for a skywalk which over time would also get encroached.
