TAMIL CINEMA 75 A LOOK BACK
All Std. 10 students of Govt. Girls School
pass Board exam
By RANDOR GUY
G. RAMANATHAN - 31
The premiere of B.R. Panthulu’s prestige-plus production
‘Veera Pandya Kattabomman’ was held in London on May 10,
1959.
The film’s final length was about 18,000 ft. It became a
critical and commercial success and had a theatrical run of 175
days. It was dubbed and released in Hindi as Amar Shaheed in
1960. It won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film
in Tamil under the ‘Certificate of Merit’ section. It was expected
to win the ‘Best Film of the Year’ award but, for many reasons,
it did not get that coveted prize.
However, it created history at the 1960 Afro Asian Film
Festival held in Cairo where it won three major awards - Best
Film, Best Actor (Sivaji Ganesan as Kattabomman), and Best
Music Director (G. Ramanathan). The news created enormous
jubilation in Chennai. Sivaji Ganesan went to Cairo to receive
the award in person. Expectedly and justifiably he was excited
to receive the award. Writing about it in his autobiography
later, he said that he was so excited to see overwhelming crowds
on their feet standing and cheering in loud ovation which
continued for five long minutes.
The film opens with the shot of the plush red curtainand,
parting it a la the movie mogul Cecil B. DeMille, the producerdirector B.R.Panthulu, walks in and talks about the film.
It was a great moment in Ramanathan’s life when he won
the award at an international festival for best music. He was
no stranger to awards but this was the greatest of them all
The movie had as many as 12 songs sung by the top singers
of that periodlike P. B. Sreenivos, T.M. Soundararajan, Tiruchi
Loganathan, Sirgazhi Govindarajan, S. Varalakshmi (who
also played a major role in the film), V.N.Sundaram, P.Susheela,
K. Jamuna Rani, T.V. Rathnam, A.G. Ratnamala, and V.T.
Rajagopal (GR’s assistant). Out of these, three songs became
very popular. One of them was‘Manam Kanintharul Vetri
Vadivelane’ (Raga Kurinji) sung by V.N. Sundaram and S.
Varalakshmi. The second song was‘Singaraa Kanne’ (Raga
Brindavanasaranga) sung by S. Varalakshmi. And the third
hit number, still very popular, was‘Pogathey Pogathey
EnKanavaa’. (This song in Raga Mukhari, had been in use for
many years and sung in Theru koothoos, street theater shows).
Ramanathan had used the same Raga in a happy duet in the
second version of ‘Ambikapathi’ in the song ‘Vaada
MalareySentheney’ (T. M. Soundararajan and P.Bhanumathi)
Such was the brilliance of the music composer who could come
out with a romantic happy duet using a sad raga! That was
Ramanathan.
There was considerable criticism about the character of
Kattabomman as visualized in the stage play of Sivaji Ganesan
and the movie by eminent critics like Theodore Bhaskaran,
Babu Krishnaswamy and Thamizhvaanan (he called
Kattabomman as ‘Kolaikaaran!, bandit). His son Lena
Thamizhvaanan and several others have described the story
as more fiction than historic truth. So did the East India
Company diaries as this writer gathered in his research, as
already narrated earlier.
The pithy and ironic comment on this film was made by a
bestselling popular Tamil weekly (no prizes for guessing!) In its
last line, it stated “….a new face called Kattabomman acts
brilliantly as Sivaji Ganesan!”
However, the film created history and is now treated as a cult
film of Tamil cinema, mainly because of the breathtaking
performance of Sivaji Ganesan as Kattabomman.

LPG delivery man modifies moped

He was spotted by the

He said that earlier,
when he was riding a
manually driven tricycle, he could only load
a limited number of cylinders. He said that it
also needed much effort
and caused hardship

removed the handle bar of the moped and fabricated it as a tricycle.
“Now I am able to take three times the load, which has not only

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Install speed breakers for safety of pedestrians on
Baroda Street
Sir, I have been residing on Baroda Street (West Mambalam) for
the past two decades. The predominantly residential street has
become a major thoroughfare for vehicle going towards Railway
Border Road. The drivers go at break neck speed and hardly ever stop
for pedestrians to cross. Senior citizens find it difficult and unsafe
especially during peak hours. There is also a school in the vicinity and
the children are also at risk of meeting with accidents. My vehicle has
been hit twice and I have seen quite a few accidents at the junction
of Baroda Street and Railway Border Road. Speed breakers need to
be installed at the road’s intersections to slow down the drivers. –

Beggar and vendor menace on Ashok Nagar 53rd Street
Sir, Anyone passing through Ashok Nagar can feast their eyes on
the majestic and beautifully decorated Anjaneyar statue situated on
53rd Street. The street is narrow and on weekends and festival days
a large number of devotees offer their prayers to the deity. Of late a
number of vendors and beggars have started to encroach on the street
near the site of the statue causing hardship to the devotees and the
nearby residents. The beggars hassle the devotees and also often
quarrel between themselves creating a nuisance. I request the police
to visit the location to assess the problem and stop the vendor
encroachment and the beggar menace so that the devotees can pray
to the Lord at peace.—Dr. K.R. Chidambara Kumarasamy, 53rd
Street, Ashok Nagar
Appeal to reroute mofussil buses via Vadapalani /
Ashok Nagar
Sir, Till 2010 moffusil buses were plying from Koyambedu to their
destinations via Vadapalani / Ashok Nagar and Kathipara junction.
Later, due to the Metro Rail project, the buses were routed via
Poonamallee High Road. But now most of the major Metro Rail work
has gotten over and the services are likely to begin soon. However the
mofussil bus services continue to be routed via Poonamallee High
Road. I request the authorities to reroute the buses via the old route
of Vadapalani / Ashok Nagar and Kathipara for the benefit of the
commuters.—R. Doraisamy, 12th Avenue, Ashok Nagar

Free Android app provides info on
local bus and train routes
With an aim to reduce the waiting time of passengers at bus stops
and train stations, a team at IIT Madras has developed an Android
application called ‘Raft’ which provides up-to-date information about
routes and time tables of Chennai MTC buses and suburban trains
The team has collected information on all the bus and suburban
train routes from the concerned authorities which can be accessed by
downloading the free ‘Raft’ application from Google Store
Since the data is stored on a server, the user needs to have a WiFi or 3G connection to access the data through the app.
Team member Siddharth said that the app has the following
features:
- Simple user interface to get all possible permutations of route
numbers with time between two places.
- Lean on resources and does not consume much data or battery.
- Database of over 6000 bus stops and 1500 bus routes
He said that when
MTC changed 50 route MAMBALAM TIMES
