Residents’woes go unheard
Sir, At the meeting on May 30, convened by T. Nagar
Residents’ Welfare Association to discuss various pending civic
and other issues like widespread encroachment, pollution (water, air and sound), insecurity in the neighbourhood for residents
and the general public due to commercial complexes not adhering to rules and regulations and fire safety standards as per the
National Building Code 2005, frequent clogging of sewer lines
resulting in water pollution, hijacking of service lanes on Usman
Road by hawkers/vendors forcing residents to take a detour and
hampering emergency services like fire tenders/ambulances,
streets being used as auto-stand/parking lots despite protests
from residents, creating car parking facilities in residential
localities by commercial complex owners, illegal tapping of
ground water by commercial establishments, members expressed displeasure at not being able to get any relief even when
the problems were brought to the notice of the authorities who
matter the most in the government. Even though residents are
the prime stakeholders in T. Nagar, they are upset at their
getting treatment which is most inhuman in nature. A feeling
of being let down by the government has set in as many of the
basic genuine needs of residents remain unresolved even after
years of taking up issues with the authorities. Their ‘right to live’
has become a big question mark.
In view of the foregoing, the majority of residents are of the
opinion that they should not vote for any particular party in the
2016 Assembly elections. Instead of totally abstaining from
voting, which will give room for bogus voting, the residents are
of the view that they should register their anger by exercising
their franchise in favour of NOTA (None of the above).
The Secretary has been authorized to intimate all members/
residents individually about the above decision so that they can

Watchmen burn rubbish
Sir, Watchmen are engaged to guard flats. They are paid a
big amount as salary. A night watchman is the laziest person
as he does not do a day’s work! Many of these watchmen do not
want to strain themselves by walking a few steps to throw
rubbish in the dustbins placed at the corner of streets. Instead
they burn the waste material such as paper, dry leaves and
other unwanted things. They do it at dusk and the whole street
is filled with smoke.
Already housewives send husbands who smoke to go outside
to do so. This only adds to the air pollution. Innocent citizens are
affected and they cough their way to the nearest clinic. I do not
know whether the watchmen burn rubbish with the knowledge

service in Tirumala
Sevas (50, Dharga Road, Rajaji Nagar, Pallavaram) sends
volunteers for a week-long service to pilgrims in Tirumala
starting on Mondays and ending on Sundays.
Men and women who are physically fit and are willing to stay
in Tirumala for a week are welcome to offer their services for
6 hours everyday. The work will be of supervisory nature.
Accommodation, lunch and dinner will be provided free of

work ahead of the monsoon.
Residents of street also said that following opening of a

Woman falls to
death from ride
in exhibition
42-year-old Fousia Begum
(resident of Pudur 3rd Street,
Ashok Nagar) is reported to
have fallen to her death in a
‘frisbee’ ride in an exhibition in
Lady Willingdon College
grounds on Kamarajar Salai
on May 31 night.
Police said that Fousia visited the exhibition with her
daughter. At around 10 p.m,
she decided to try the ‘frisbee’
ride which is similar to ‘pendulum’ ride, as her daughter stood
watching.
Fousia, who was heavily
built, was not able to wear the
safety harness as she did not
fit into the seat. Though the
operator told her that she might
fall off, she assured him that
she would hold on. Quoting eyewitnesses, police said that as
the ‘pendulum’ reached a height
of about 30 feet, the woman
lost her grip and fell down. She
suffered grievous head injuries
and was rushed to a private
hospital in Adyar where she
died on June 1 evening. “Other
visitors to the exhibition had
warned her to hold on tight.
While on the ride, she tried to
adjust her sari and fell down,”
an eyewitness said.
A ride operator said Fousia
was uncomfortable from the
beginning, but she still got on
the ride. “She tried to climb
down from the ride, but later
decided to stay put,” said the
operator who witnessed the
accident.
Vasan, a social activist who
also witnessed the accident,
said that there was no ambulance on standby at the venue
though all the rides were
crowded.
“It was a clear case of accident due to negligence of the
ride operators,” said an investigating officer. The Marina
police have booked a case under IPC Section 304A (causing
death by negligence) and arrested Prakash Kumar, 24, and
Manoj, 32, both ride operators.
They were remanded in judicial
custody.
The exhibition, which
charged Rs.30 per head for
entry, remained closed after
the woman’s death on June 1.

According to the prosecution, Selvam, facing a slump in
business, asked his friend
Arokiadoss for financial help.
Arokiadoss gave him a loan of
Rs. 25,000 and a sovereign.
Arokiadoss failed to repay the
loan as promised.
On April 28, Arokiadoss and
his relative Charles went to
Selvam’s house to ask for the
money. Selvam refused to pay
up. There was a heated exchange of words. Arokiadoss
and his employee Vijaykumar
then assaulted Selvam with
logs.
Selvam was admitted to
Royapettah Government Hospital where he succumbed to
his injuries the next day.

May 24 at the age of 76.
Natanam did illustrations
and cartoons in leading Tamil
magazines such as Kalki,
Dinamani Kadhir and Kunkumam.
He drew over 650 cartoons
in Anna Nagar Times and
Mambalam Times for the
weekly humorous column
‘Thamaashaa Varigal’ by J. S.
Raghavan.
Natanam was well-known
for his murals depicting Indian
culture and tradition, made of
various materials like stones,
metals and wood. His murals
adorn the walls of Chennai Airport, 5-star hotels, educational
institutions and temples in India, USA, Singapore and Malaysia.
Natanam is survived by his
wife Rajalakshmi and a daughter.
