Manhattan
Presbyterian
Church
The Lord’s Day, May 24th, 2015
To all who are spiritually weary and seek rest; to all who mourn and long for
comfort; to all who struggle and desire victory; to all who sin and need a
Savior; to all who are strangers and want fellowship; to all who hunger and
thirst after righteousness; and to all who will come, this church opens wide her
doors and offers welcome in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.
Welcome
We are so excited you can be here today to join in worshipping the God
of the universe with Manhattan Presbyterian Church. We love God and
are thrilled to see God build this local church body for the furthering of
His Kingdom in Manhattan, Kansas. We know visiting a church can lead
to a lot of questions and we’d love to help you find answers so please
ask. Again, we’re really glad you’re here.
Sunday Information
Nursery
Nursery is provided on the north side of the building (to the right from the
entryway) for children 4 and under, but they are also always welcome in the
service.
Restrooms
Restrooms are located in the entrance hallway.
Children’s Church/Worship Training
In the future we plan to have a time for preparing older children for participating
in the Sunday worship service. This will allow children to worship with their
families before being dismissed prior to the sermon to learn more about how
and why we worship God. Currently they remain the whole service or go to the
nursery.
Why Robes?
Brian & Jon wear robes during the service which might seem odd. This has been
a tradition of the church for many centuries. It helps connect us to our past
heritage.
The robe also helps emphasize the office of the pastor and de-emphasize the
personality of the men in the pulpit. It serves to take notice away from what
Brian & Jon are wearing that particular Sunday, thus focusing us away from their
terrible fashion senses and onto Christ himself. At first it may seem odd, but
after a few services you won’t notice it, which is partly the point.

LIFE IN MANHATTAN PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH
Today we are highlighting one of our Core Values below, but you can learn
details of all of our Core Values & Distinctives at ManhattanPres.com
Eagerly Making Disciples of Christ
One of the last instructions Jesus left his disciples with is found in Matthew
28. Jesus tells them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to
me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the
name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to
observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to
the end of the age.”
We believe the Church is God’s means for accomplishing the task of making
disciples. Not as a program, but as His chosen people who are engaged in the
lives of others, all who are at varying stages of sanctification (Colossians 1:28).
We seek to be an evangelistic witness in the city of Manhattan, discipling
those who God calls to our care. Lord willing, in response to the grace
they’ve experienced, they in turn will become disciple-makers. Our hope and
vision is to see enemies of God drawn to His grace as He conforms them to
become His beloved children through faith in the gospel. This happens as we
teach the doctrines of grace in various settings and as we interact with each
other throughout the week learning how to encourage one another daily
(Hebrews 3:13) with the Word of God and prayer.
As a church in a college town we seek to foster in the congregation a love for
college students that draws them into our lives and homes, giving them a
tangible understanding of covenant community and church membership. Our
hope is that they will go from college with such a love for Christ’s Church that
they are actively involved in the local church wherever God may lead them.

GOD CALLS US
Reflection
“As a shepherd seeks out his flock when he is among his sheep that
have been scattered, so will I seek out my sheep, and I [God] will rescue
them from all places where they have been scattered on a day of clouds
and thick darkness.”
-Ezekiel 34:12
“We cannot but admit that not even the least thing takes place unless it
is ordered by God. For who have ever been so concerned and curious as
to find out how much hair he has on his head? There is no one. God,
however, knows the number. Indeed, nothing is too small in us or in any
other creature, not to be ordered by the all-knowing and all-powerful
providence of God.

HYMN OF ADORATION
Be Thou My Vision
Be Thou my vision, O Lord of my heart;
Naught be all else to me, save that Thou art
Thou my best thought, by day or by night,
Waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light.
Be Thou my wisdom, and Thou my true Word;
I ever with Thee and Thou with me, Lord;
Thou my great Father, and I Thy true son;
Thou in me dwelling, and I with Thee one.
Riches I heed not, nor man's empty praise,
Thou mine inheritance, now and always:
Thou and Thou only, first in my heart,
High king of heaven, my treasure Thou art.
High king of heaven, my victory won,
May I reach heaven's joys, O bright heaven's sun!
Heart of my own heart, whatever befall,
Still be my vision, O ruler of all.

gain I had, I
counted as loss
for the sake of
Christ. Indeed,
I count
everything as
loss because of
the surpassing
worth of
knowing Christ
Jesus my Lord.
For his sake I
have suffered
the loss of all
things and
count them as
rubbish, in
order that I
may gain

Heidelberg Catechism Question 1
Pastor: What is your only comfort in life and death?
People: That I am not my own,
but belong with body and soul,
both in life and in death,
to my faithful Savior Jesus Christ.
He has fully paid for all my sins
with his precious blood,
and has set me free
from all the power of the devil.
He also preserves me in such a way
that without the will of my heavenly Father
not a hair can fall from my head;
indeed, all things must work together
for my salvation.
Therefore, by his Holy Spirit

CONFESSION OF SIN
Sitting
We Confess Our Sin
Because sin is
so pervasive in
both our
corporate and
individual lives,
Christians are
called to come
before our
holy God with
honesty and
transparency,
confessing our
brokenness
and asking for
both
forgiveness
and healing
through Jesus
Christ.
Savior, we need you.
See 1 John 1:9
for more on
confession.
I believe, help my unbelief.
We are slow to learn and prone to forget.
We are pained by our graceless hearts, by our prayerless days.
Forgive us for our wealth of pride and poverty of love,
for our defiled conscience and wasted hours.
We have been given eyes to see and yet look away from your
beauty.
Make it our highest joy to study you,
to meditate on you, to gaze on you,
to sit like Mary at your feet,
to lean like John on your breast,
to appeal like Peter to your love,
to count like Paul all things as worthless compared to knowing you.
Amen

WORSHIP THROUGH GIVING
We Give Our Tithes and Offerings
The offering is a way for Christians to support the church’s
mission and ministry. Christians give back to God a portion of
all the resources which God has given. We give as an act of
faith and gratitude in response to God’s grace to us. Sitting
We include
Tithes and
Offering in the
service because
we view it as a
means of
participating in
worship.
If you are guest
today please
feel no
obligation to
give.
Words for Reflection
Lord, with the action of this offering we tell your story:
how you have dealt generously with us,
how you have met our needs,
how you have heard our prayers,
how your goodness is from everlasting to everlasting.
Bless these offerings which are given in the name of
Christ, Amen.

PREACHING OF GOD’S WORD
From the
English
Standard
Version
(London:
Crossway,
2010)
As the Bible is
the primary
means by
which God
speaks to and
edifies His
people, we
read and listen
to the
Scriptures
together in
worship. In
ancient Israel
and the early
church,
services of
worship were
organized for
the public
reading of
Scripture - a
practice vital to
building up the
community of
faith.
A sermon is not
just a teaching
for living; it is
mainly a time
when Christ
encounters His
people through
His Word.

“The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of
our God will stand forever.”

II. God is a Hospitable Host
III. Jesus is our Lord, Our Shepherd, Our Host
HYMN OF RESPONSE
Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing
Standing
Come Thou Fount of every blessing
Tune my heart to sing Thy grace;
Streams of mercy, never ceasing,
Call for songs of loudest praise
Teach me some melodious sonnet,
Sung by flaming tongues above.
Praise the mount! I'm fixed upon it,
Mount of God's unchanging love.
Fount is short
for fountain or
water spring,
it’s
acknowledging
that God is the
source of every
blessing.
Here I raise my Ebenezer;
Hither by Thy help I'm come;
And I hope, by Thy good pleasure,
Safely to arrive at home.
Jesus sought me when a stranger,
Wandering from the fold of God;
He, to rescue me from danger,
Interposed His precious blood.
O to grace how great a debtor
Daily I'm constrained to be!
Let that grace now like a fetter,
Bind my wandering heart to Thee.
Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it,
Prone to leave the God I love;
Here's my heart, O take and seal it,
Seal it for Thy courts above.
Ebenezer is
Hebrew for
“Stone of Help”
a way of
remembering
what God has
done.
1 Samuel 7:12
“Then Samuel
took a stone
and set it up
between
Mizpah and
Shen and called
its name
Ebenezer; for
he said, “Till
now the LORD
has helped us.”
Exodus 33:14
“And he said,
“My presence
will go with
you, and I will
give you rest.””

GOD COMMUNES WITH US
The Lord’s Supper
Communion is a sign and seal for those who believe in Jesus Christ alone for
the forgiveness of sin. It's not for good people. It's for you if you believe and
embrace that you are worse and more messed up than you ever dare to admit;
and yet you are more loved and accepted by our Savior than you had ever
dared to hope - this is because of the life, the death and the resurrection of
Jesus for you. You will be invited to come forward. We serve wine, but also offer grape juice
for those who prefer for reasons of personal conviction. Children are welcome to come with their parents. Each child should talk with
the elders about his or her belief in Christ before taking the Lord's Supper.
Please contact us to do that at a future date. If you are not taking the Lord's Supper with use today, we don't want this to be
an awkward time. You can come forward and an elder will pray with you or you
may stay seated and pray one of the prayers provided on the next page. We're
glad you're here today. Words of Institution
Pastor: Let us proclaim the mystery of faith:
People: Christ has died.
Christ is risen.
Christ will come again.
Pastor: Christ, our Passover, has been sacrificed for us.
People: Therefore, let us keep the feast.
Pastor: The gifts of God are for the people of God. Come eat and drink with
thanksgiving.

GOD COMMUNES WITH US
The prayers below are provided as guides for your
silent, individual prayer during the Lord’s Supper
PRAYER FOR THOSE SEARCHING FOR THE TRUTH
Lord Jesus, you claim to be the Way, the Truth, and the Life. Grant that I might
be undaunted by the cost of following you as I consider the reasons for doing
so. If what you claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and open me to the
reality of who you are. Give me an understanding of you that is coherent and
convincing, and that leads to the life you promise. Amen.
PRAYER OF FAITH
Lord Jesus Christ, I admit that I am weaker and more sinful than I ever dared
admit, but through you I am more loved and accepted than I ever dared hope.
I thank you for paying my debt on the cross, taking what I deserved in order to
offer me complete forgiveness. Knowing that you have been raised from the
dead, I turn from my sins and receive you as my Savior and Lord. Amen.
PRAYER OF COMMITMENT
Lord Jesus, you have called us to follow you in a life of committed discipleship
in your church. Grant that I may take the necessary steps to be one with your
people, and live in the fullness of your Spirit. Amen.

O Love That Will Not Let Me Go
O Love that will not let me go,
I rest my weary soul in thee;
I give thee back the life I owe,
That in thine ocean depths its flow
May richer, fuller be.
O light that followest all my way,
I yield my flickering torch to thee;
My heart restores its borrowed ray,
That in thy sunshines blaze its day
May brighter, fairer be.
O Joy that seekest me through pain,
I cannot close my heart to thee;
I trace the rainbow through the rain,
And feel the promise is not vain,
That morn shall tearless be.
O Cross that liftest up my head,
I dare not ask to fly from thee;
I lay in dust life’s glory dead,
And from the ground there blossoms red
Life that shall endless be.
