Manhattan Presbyterian Church The Lord’s Day, May 31st, 2015 To all who are spiritually weary and seek rest; to all who mourn and long for comfort; to all who struggle and desire victory; to all who sin and need a Savior; to all who are strangers and want fellowship; to all who hunger and thirst after righteousness; and to all who will come, this church opens wide her doors and offers welcome in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Welcome We are so excited you can be here today to join in worshipping the God of the universe with Manhattan Presbyterian Church. We love God and are thrilled to see God build this local church body for the furthering of His Kingdom in Manhattan, Kansas. We know visiting a church can lead to a lot of questions and we’d love to help you find answers so please ask. Again, we’re really glad you’re here. Sunday Information Nursery Nursery is provided on the north side of the building (to the right from the entryway) for children 4 and under, but they are also always welcome in the service. Restrooms Restrooms are located in the entrance hallway. Children’s Church/Worship Training In the future we plan to have a time for preparing older children for participating in the Sunday worship service. This will allow children to worship with their families before being dismissed prior to the sermon to learn more about how and why we worship God. Currently they remain the whole service or go to the nursery. Why Robes? We wear robes during the service which might seem odd. This has been a tradition of the church for many centuries. It helps connect us to our past heritage. The robe also helps emphasize the office of the pastor and de-emphasize the personality of the men in the pulpit. It serves to take notice away from what we are wearing that particular Sunday, thus focusing us away from our terrible fashion senses and onto Christ himself. At first it may seem odd, but after a few services you won’t notice it, which is partly the point. 1 LIFE IN MANHATTAN PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH NEWS & EVENTS Sign Up for the MPC Weekly Update Email Every week we send out an email with info about upcoming church events as well as community events you might be interested in. Rather than starting new ministries for serving, we see great value in encouraging the congregation to serve in local ministries that already minister to the needs of the community. We will serve together seeking to meet the needs for food, housing, counseling, crisis pregnancy, community improvement and all sorts of other needs. In this way we can be salt and light to both those we are serving and those who are serving along side of us. We hope to be a presence in the community that conforms to what Jesus taught in Matthew 5:14-16 when He encourages them saying, “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” If you’re interested in serving with any of the following we’d be happy to get you contact with the proper people. Nothing can be more compassionate than the severe reprimand which calls another Christian in one’s community back from the path of sin.” - Dietrich Bonhoeffer “Resolved, to think much on all occasions of my own dying and of the common circumstances which attend death. “ - Jonathan Edwards Standing God invites us to worship Him, we respond to His invitation. Call to Worship from Psalm 117 Pastor: Praise the Lord, all Nations! People: Extol Him, all peoples! Pastor: For great is His steadfast love towards us, People: The faithfulness of the Lord endures forever. All: Praise the Lord! 5 HYMN OF ADORATION Holy, Holy, Holy Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty! Early in the morning our song shall rise to thee. Holy, holy, holy! Merciful and mighty, God in three persons, blessed Trinity! Holy, holy, holy! All the saints adore thee, Casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea; Cherubim and seraphim falling down before thee, Which wert, and art, and evermore shalt be. Holy, holy, holy! Though the darkness hide thee, Though the eye of sinful man thy glory may not see, Only thou art holy; there is none beside thee, Perfect in power, in love and purity. Standing Revelation 4:8 “And the four living creatures, each of them with six wings, are full of eyes all around and within, and day and night they never cease to say, “Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord God Almighty, who was and is and is to come!” Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty! All thy works shall praise thy name, in earth and sky and sea. Holy, holy, holy! Merciful and mighty, God in three persons, blessed Trinity. Words: Reginald Heber (1783-1826) Music: John B. Dykes (1861) Public Domain 6 GOD CLEANSES US Standing Pastor Brian Hough Prayer of Adoration This is a prayer of praise and adoration for who God is. This prayer focuses on the glory and honor of our great and mighty God, but also asks God to help us worship Him. Lord’s Prayer Each week after the Prayer of Adoration with one voice we Our Father which art in heaven, pray the Lord’s Hallowed be Thy name. Prayer. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. 7 AFFIRMATION OF FAITH Affirmation of Faith Standing The Apostles’ Creed The Affirmation of faith is a time for us to remember together what we believe. I believe in God the Father Almighty Maker of heaven and earth; I believe in Jesus Christ His only Son our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From there He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, This is called the Apostles' Creed not because it was written by the apostles themselves, but because it contains a brief summary of their teachings. It dates back to at least the 4th century. “catholic” in this creed means the true Christian Church of all times and all places, which ought not be confused with Roman Catholicism. the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Gloria Patri Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, amen Gloria Patri is a brief historical praise to God which clearly sets forth Trinitarian understanding 8 CONFESSION OF SIN Sitting Because sin is so pervasive in both our corporate and individual lives, Christians are called to come before our holy God with honesty and transparency, confessing our brokenness and asking for both forgiveness and healing through Jesus Christ. We Confess Our Sin Lord Jesus, forgive us for not pursuing you as our Lord and our God. We claim to be strong only to find our lives broken and burdened. We seek our significance in things, supposing those things could provide us lasting happiness. Yet, we are left exhausted and restless. Have mercy on us, Lord, according to your unfailing love. In the strong name of Jesus Christ our Lord we pray, Amen. See 1 John 1:9 for more on confession. Silent Confession of Sin The Words of Assurance declare the good news that all those who hope in Jesus alone to make them right with God are forgiven, not based on their own merits, but based on God’s promise of salvation in Christ. 9 Words of Assurance Colossians 2:13–14 “And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross.” PSALMS, HYMNS AND SPIRITUAL SONGS Rock of Ages Rock of Ages, cleft for me, let me hide myself in thee; let the water and the blood, from thy wounded side which flowed, be of sin the double cure; Cleanse me from its guilt and pow’r Not the labors of my hands can fulfill thy law's demands; could my zeal no respite know, could my tears forever flow, all for sin could not atone; thou must save, and thou alone. Standing Psalms 61:1–3 “Hear my cry, O God, listen to my prayer; from the end of the earth I call to you when my heart is faint. Lead me to the rock that is higher than I, for you have been my refuge, a strong tower against the enemy.” Nothing in my hand I bring, simply to the cross I cling; naked, come to thee for dress; helpless, look to thee for grace; foul, I to the fountain fly; wash me, Savior, or I die. While I draw this fleeting breath, when mine eyes shall close in death, when I soar to worlds unknown, see thee on thy judgment throne, Rock of Ages, cleft for me, let me hide myself in thee. Words & Music: Augustus Toplady (1776) 10 PRAYER & FELLOWSHIP Standing Passing of the Peace Members of the congregation greet one another with a sign of friendship such as, “The peace of Christ with you” and the response, “And also with you.” Pastor: Since God has forgiven us in Christ, let us forgive one another. The peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. People: And also with you. 1 John 4 Sitting Pastoral Prayer The Pastoral Prayer is a prayer offered by an elder during the service of worship for, and on behalf of, the congregation. Travis Shanahan 11 WORSHIP THROUGH GIVING We Give Our Tithes and Offerings The offering is a way for Christians to support the church’s mission and ministry. Christians give back to God a portion of all the resources which God has given. We give as an act of faith and gratitude in response to God’s grace to us. Sitting We include Tithes and Offering in the service because we view it as a means of participating in worship. If you are guest today please feel no obligation to give. Words for Reflection Lord we give you today what is already yours. You provide so much for us, blessings pressed down, shaken together, running over. Thank you for giving us the ability to give, and cheerful hearts to do it. Amen. 12 PREACHING OF GOD’S WORD From the English Standard Version (London: Crossway, 2010) As the Bible is the primary means by which God speaks to and edifies His people, we read and listen to the Scriptures together in worship. In ancient Israel and the early church, services of worship were organized for the public reading of Scripture - a practice vital to building up the community of faith. A sermon is not just a teaching for living; it is mainly a time when Christ encounters His people through His Word. 13 The Call! Genesis 12:1-9 Pastor Paul Reynolds ??? HYMN OF RESPONSE Behold the Lamb of God Behold the Lamb who bears our sins away Slain for us and we remember The promise made that all who come in faith Find forgiveness at the cross Chorus: So we share in this bread of life And we drink of His sacrifice As a sign of our bonds of peace Around the table of the King The body of our Savior Jesus Christ Torn for you eat and remember The wounds that heal the death that brings us life Paid the price to make us one Standing Also called “Communion Hymn” 1 Corinthians 11:24 “and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, ‘This is my body which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.’” Chorus The blood that cleanses every stain of sin Shed for you drink and remember He drained death's cup that all may enter in To receive the life of God Chorus And so with thankfulness and faith we rise To respond and to remember Our call to follow in the steps of Christ As his body here on earth Words and Music: Keith and Kristyn Getty & Stuart Townend ccl# 11250329 Chorus 14 GOD COMMUNES WITH US The Lord’s Supper Communion is a sign and seal for those who believe in Jesus Christ alone for the forgiveness of sin. It's not for good people. It's for you if you believe and embrace that you are worse and more messed up than you ever dare to admit; and yet you are more loved and accepted by our Savior than you had ever dared to hope - this is because of the life, the death and the resurrection of Jesus for you. You will be invited to come forward. We serve wine, but also offer grape juice for those who prefer for reasons of personal conviction. Children are welcome to come with their parents. Each child should talk with the elders about his or her belief in Christ before taking the Lord's Supper. Please contact us to do that at a future date. If you are not taking the Lord's Supper with use today, we don't want this to be an awkward time. You can come forward and an elder will pray with you or you may stay seated and pray one of the prayers provided on the next page. We're glad you're here today. Words of Institution Pastor: Let us proclaim the mystery of faith: People: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. Pastor: Christ, our Passover, has been sacrificed for us. People: Therefore, let us keep the feast. Pastor: The gifts of God are for the people of God. Come eat and drink with thanksgiving. Prayer of Thanksgiving 15 GOD COMMUNES WITH US The prayers below are provided as guides for your silent, individual prayer during the Lord’s Supper PRAYER FOR THOSE SEARCHING FOR THE TRUTH Lord Jesus, you claim to be the Way, the Truth, and the Life. Grant that I might be undaunted by the cost of following you as I consider the reasons for doing so. If what you claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and open me to the reality of who you are. Give me an understanding of you that is coherent and convincing, and that leads to the life you promise. Amen. PRAYER OF FAITH Lord Jesus Christ, I admit that I am weaker and more sinful than I ever dared admit, but through you I am more loved and accepted than I ever dared hope. I thank you for paying my debt on the cross, taking what I deserved in order to offer me complete forgiveness. Knowing that you have been raised from the dead, I turn from my sins and receive you as my Savior and Lord. Amen. PRAYER OF COMMITMENT Lord Jesus, you have called us to follow you in a life of committed discipleship in your church. Grant that I may take the necessary steps to be one with your people, and live in the fullness of your Spirit. Amen. 16 GOD SENDS US Standing John 1:1; 14 “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God….And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.” “ere” means “before” Words: Ancient Irish poem from 8th century Arranged by David Evans, 1927 Public Domain 17 Of the Father’s Love Begotten Of the Father’s love begotten, ere the worlds began to be, He is Alpha and Omega, He the source, the ending He, Of the things that are, that have been, And that future years shall see, evermore and evermore!
