On Wednesday, February 25, the JNF Canada Rotary Mission toured the Western Negev and
saw how KKL-JNF is transforming the desert into a fertile and welcoming region for residents
and visitors.
Bio-filters Purify Surface Runoff Water for Reuse
Two new bio-filter facilities established by KKL-JNF in Ramla and Bat Yam demonstrated their
efficiency during Israel’s recent rainstorms. They are designed to enable surface runoff water to
be collected, purified via environmentally friendly physical and biological methods, and then
channeled into the aquifers as clean water. These new bio-filters join an older one that has been
operating successfully in Kfar Sava for a number of years.
Meeting on the Israel National Trail
The Meeting on the Israel National Trail hike currently underway from Eilat in the south to
She’ar Yishuv in the north has now (as of March 16th) arrived at the Gaza Periphery. The hike
is held in memory of soldiers who fell in Israel’s wars and victims of terrorist attacks, and it is
designed to strengthen participants’ Jewish and Israeli identity and encourage dialogue between
different sections of society. KKL-JNF is one of the organizers, and its guides lead the hikers
along the trail.
Green Leadership Classroom Conference
Negev Gala 2015
KKL-JNF's leadership classrooms have already become a familiar sight in over 430 elementary
schools throughout Israel. On Wednesday, March 18, over 500 schoolchildren from Israel's
south arrived at Hamalachim-Shahariya Forest near Kiryat Gat for a day of fun activities related
to the environment. The day-long conference represents the peak of activities which have
accompanied the wooden open classrooms throughout the year. These open classrooms have
been built with the support of KKL-JNF's friends around the world.
What we’ve been up to
Purim Palooza
The Jewish National Fund of Manitoba/Saskatchewan and Congregation Etz Chayim had a
great time hosting Purim Palooza on Sunday, March 1. Costumed children enjoyed a funfilled afternoon featuring entertainment by Barry Kay, a scavenger hunt, face-painting, balloon
animals, a bouncy house and much more! (Click to see more photos)
National Education Emissary Visit
On March 17, Gray Academy of Jewish Education welcomed JNF Canada's National Education
Emissary, Hadar Epstein, to give presentations on the seven species, parts of a tree and
accessibility in Israel's parks.
In memory
Earl Pitch, Advisory Council
Earl Pitch was an ardent supporter of Israel and a dedicated Jewish National Fund volunteer
who will be greatly missed.
Serving on the JNF Manitoba/Saskatchewan Board since 1985, Earl was highly involved in the
annual High Holiday campaigns and Negev Dinner campaigns. He served as President of the
Board from 1994-1995, served as National Director of JNF Canada from 1985-1987 and was
on the Board of Governors in 1988. Because of his passion and hard work, Israel has a brighter
future.
He lived a long and fulfilling life, marrying Sylvia Kemel after a seven-year courtship and having
three children (Randy, Allen and Howard). He grew up in rural Manitoba helping with his
family’s stores before they moved to Winnipeg to open a pant factory. After marriage, Sylvia and
Earl moved to Beverly Hills, CA to manage multiple nursing homes before changing professions
once again and entering the entertainment business. Family responsibilities pulled the Pitch
family back to Winnipeg in 1980, where Earl, a self-proclaimed workaholic, seized further
opportunities to be involved in the community and professional world.
Earl felt a strong sense of duty towards family and was thankful that he and Sylvia were able to
live close to their parents, children and grandchildren in Winnipeg.
Earl would like to be remembered as considerate of others, dedicated to family, community and
the State of Israel.
